What Problems Does the 2007 Volvo XC70 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Volvo XC70 often revolve around the automatic transmission. Some owners have experienced slipping or harsh shifting, especially as the vehicle ages. Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial for preventing these issues. The electronic throttle module (ETM) can also be a source of trouble, leading to erratic engine behavior. Replacement or cleaning of the ETM may be necessary. Suspension components, particularly the rear self-leveling Nivomat shocks, are prone to failure and can be costly to replace. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, is another long-term concern. Check the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion. The climate control system can also develop issues, such as failing blower motors or malfunctioning blend doors. Recalls for the 2007 XC70 were issued for issues like potential fuel leaks and airbag malfunctions. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with Volvo to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance history. Well-maintained XC70s can last for many years, but neglecting routine service can lead to expensive repairs.

How long will the 2007 Volvo XC70 last?

A well-maintained 2007 Volvo XC70 can realistically achieve 200,000 to 250,000 miles or more. Given its age, many examples are already exceeding these figures. Lifespan heavily depends on adherence to Volvo's recommended maintenance schedule. Key to long-term durability is regular transmission servicing, diligent rust prevention, and prompt attention to suspension issues. Weaknesses over time include the degradation of rubber components (hoses, bushings), wear of interior trim, and potential for electrical gremlins. Consistent maintenance is crucial for avoiding premature component failure and maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Volvo XC70 offered a reasonable level of tech for its time. Standard entertainment features included a premium sound system with a CD player and auxiliary input. A navigation system was available as an optional feature. Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included cruise control and rear parking assist (optional).

Safety was a major focus for Volvo. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain), and whiplash protection system (WHIPS) in the front seats. Optional safety features included bi-xenon headlights for improved visibility.

Crash-test ratings for the 2007 Volvo XC70 were generally very good. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also awarded it high scores in its crash tests. These ratings reflected Volvo's commitment to safety and helped make the XC70 a popular choice for families. While lacking modern driver-assistance technologies like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking, the 2007 XC70 provided a solid foundation of safety features for its era.

2007 Volvo XC70 Prices and Market Value

The 2007 Volvo XC70 had a starting MSRP of around $33,000 to $38,000, depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices range from approximately $3,000 to $8,000, depending on mileage, condition, and location. The XC70 has depreciated significantly over time, as is typical for older vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and any major repairs or replacements. Examples with low mileage, a clean title, and documented maintenance records command higher prices. The presence of desirable options, such as the Premium or Climate packages, can also increase resale value.

2007 Volvo XC70 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2007 Volvo XC70 are moderate, varying by location and driver history. Fuel costs are average for its class, with combined mpg in the low 20s. Maintenance and repair can be more expensive than some rivals, particularly for transmission and suspension issues. Parts may be pricier, and specialized knowledge is sometimes required for repairs. Long-term ownership costs can be considered moderately high due to potential for repairs and maintenance needs as the car ages. It is not the most economical choice.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Volvo XC70 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2007 Volvo XC70 competed with vehicles like the Subaru Outback, Audi A4 Avant, and BMW 3 Series Wagon. In terms of performance, the XC70 offered adequate power but wasn't as sporty as the BMW. The Subaru Outback provided similar all-wheel-drive capability but often at a lower price point and with less luxurious features. Compared to the Audi, the XC70 was generally considered more reliable. Feature-wise, the XC70 provided a comfortable interior and decent tech for its time, but it lacked some of the advanced features offered by competitors.

Regarding reliability, the XC70's automatic transmission and suspension components can be potential weaknesses, whereas Subaru Outbacks are typically known for their robust reliability. Prices for used XC70s are generally competitive, but repair costs can be higher than some alternatives.

Similar alternatives to consider include the Subaru Outback for its all-weather capability and reliability, or the Acura TSX wagon for a blend of reliability and features. A well-maintained Audi A4 Avant could also be a good option, but with potentially higher maintenance costs. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Volvo XC70 a Good Wagon?

The 2007 Volvo XC70 is ideal for those seeking a safe, comfortable, and practical wagon with all-wheel drive capability. It's a good choice for families or individuals who prioritize safety and utility over sporty handling. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and maintenance history. A well-maintained example is a decent value. Look for models with documented service records and avoid those with signs of transmission or suspension issues. Given its age, only consider buying used. Pay close attention to rust, especially if the car has been driven in snowy regions. It is not a top pick for those prioritizing low running costs.

Very reliable

Runs great, very nice look, and fits my needs. The vehicle also fit within my budget so it made purchasing very easy. I’ve owned a Volvo in the past as well.

Best all around car I’ve owned in 60 years driving

135,000 No problems. Replaced headlights because an idiot broke one. Now with clear lenses and nice clear coat paint. Looks like new. No one believes it is a 13 year Old car. Even the interior is in great shape.

Best and final year for "P2" XC70

My 07 XC70 now has over 180k miles and still looks like new, including the interior. About a year ago I started looking around for a replacement after a few minor maintenance issues but, after 6 months of searching, decided to refurbish and keep driving this one. New strut assy, control arms and ball joints + other steering bits, rear shocks, front CV axles, plugs and coil packs will get you new car ride for around $4-$5k (half again that at the dealer). The next generation, 2008-2015, XC70 had significant problems with the V6 motor that Ford forced them to OEM. After GEELY bought them and provided financing, Volvo developed a sweet 2.0 light boost 4 cyl that made Ward's 10 best engines list. Since Volvo no longer makes wagons, The 2015.5 or 2016 XC70 will likely be my next car - in a couple of years, when used prices get down to my mid teens target.

Best Volvo XC70 of the all

This is the ultimate SUV that's not an SUV. It's like having a sports car with lots of room to haul stuff. The car handles well and it never looses it's jump from a stop sign. And if you drive at altitude, the turbo give you power that the others only wish for. Lastly, Volvo's last forever and this one is indestructible.

Smaller SUV

The XC70 is a good wagon to get, but you must stay on top of them. If you stay on top of them then you will enjoy this wagon that is really a small SUV.

Electrical Problems

I have owned 3 Volvo wagons. The last two have suffered from numerous computer/electrical problems after 100,000 miles. I have had to replace the "computer" twice because it failed. I had to replace the radio because it died. Electrical gremlins have caused the door locks to intermittently fail. Air bag warning light will come on and go off for no reason. Car is dealer serviced but they have not fixed the problems and actually created new problems. Last time I was at the dealership in Charlotte complaining the air bag light was on. When I picked up the car the door locks did not work, the windows did not work and dash lights would not work. Volvo dealerships in Charlotte are horrible. DO NOT BUY A VOLVO!

A Civilian Tank

This is my second XC70 and fifth station wagon with AWD I've owned. By far the best. Seats are living room quality, ride is exceptionally solid. If there's a drawback, it's the MPG - but I find if I'm not a lead-foot, I can get about 20 mpg between city and highway driving. Plan on keeping it for a decade, with the help of my trusty Volvo-centric mechanic.
