The 2009 Volvo XC70 is a versatile wagon, building on Volvo's legacy of safety and practicality. It falls into the crossover wagon category. Model years for this generation ran from 2008-2016. Key trims included the base 3.2 and the T6 with its turbocharged engine. Pricing ranged from approximately $37,000 new. The Good

The 2009 Volvo XC70 offers a blend of performance and practicality. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior appeal to families. Its all-wheel drive provides confidence in various weather conditions. While not the most fuel-efficient, its reliability and solid build quality offer peace of mind. The XC70's classic Volvo design evokes a sense of safety and dependability, appealing to both emotional and practical considerations.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2009 Volvo XC70 include potential issues with the electronic throttle module (ETM), causing rough idling or stalling. What Problems Does the 2009 Volvo XC70 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Volvo XC70 often revolve around the electronic throttle module (ETM). Symptoms include rough idling, stalling, and poor throttle response. While Volvo extended the warranty on some ETMs in earlier models, it's still a potential concern. Power steering pump failures are also relatively common, often manifesting as a whining noise and eventual loss of power steering assist. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission, have been reported, ranging from rough shifting to complete failure.

Suspension components, especially the front lower control arms, tend to wear out over time, leading to clunking noises and alignment problems. The climate control system can also experience issues, such as faulty blend door actuators or compressor failures.

While Volvo has a reputation for safety, some specific recalls might have affected the 2009 XC70. It's crucial to check the NHTSA website (www.nhtsa.gov) with the vehicle's VIN to determine if any outstanding recalls apply. Long-term reliability concerns generally involve the aforementioned issues, as well as potential electrical problems common in vehicles with complex systems. Routine maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is essential to mitigate these risks and prolong the XC70's lifespan.

How long will the 2009 Volvo XC70 last?

A 2009 Volvo XC70, with proper maintenance, can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with consistent upkeep. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items are crucial.

Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Weaknesses that emerge over time include suspension wear (especially control arms and struts), potential transmission issues (particularly if fluid changes are neglected), and electrical component failures. The ETM, if not already replaced, can become a long-term concern. Rust can also be a factor, particularly in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. However, with diligent care, these vehicles can provide many years of reliable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Volvo XC70 came standard with a decent array of technology and safety features for its time. Built-in tech included a premium sound system with CD player and auxiliary input, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power-adjustable driver's seat.

Optional features could include a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity (though this wasn't standard on all trims), a sunroof, and rear parking sensors. The Technology Package added adaptive cruise control and collision warning systems.

Driver-assistance features were relatively advanced for the era. Volvo's City Safety system, designed to mitigate low-speed collisions, was standard. This system automatically applied the brakes if it detected an imminent collision at speeds below 19 mph.

Safety was a major selling point for Volvo. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and a comprehensive airbag system, including front, side, and curtain airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally very good. The 2009 XC70 typically earned high marks for its performance in frontal, side, and rollover crash tests. Check official IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific ratings.

2009 Volvo XC70 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Volvo XC70 had an MSRP starting around $37,000. The T6 model, with its turbocharged engine and additional features, commanded a higher price. As of today, used market prices for a 2009 XC70 typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for vehicles of this age.

Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and geographical location. XC70s with lower mileage, well-documented maintenance records, and desirable optional features (like the Technology Package or Climate Package) tend to command higher prices. Demand for wagons also influences resale value; in some areas, wagons are more popular than others.

2009 Volvo XC70 Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2009 Volvo XC70 involves moderate running costs. Insurance premiums are generally average for its class, but can vary based on driving record and location. Fuel economy, at around 16-23 mpg, is not particularly economical. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the XC70's European heritage and potential for specific Volvo-related issues. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits; neglecting upkeep can lead to expensive repairs. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle, but with proactive maintenance, costs can be managed.

2009 Volvo XC70 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Volvo XC70 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Volvo XC70 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 Volvo XC70 competed with vehicles like the Subaru Outback, Audi A4 Allroad (though earlier generations), and potentially some smaller SUVs/crossovers.

In terms of performance, the XC70 T6 offered comparable power to some rivals, while the base 3.2 was adequate but not sporty. The Outback offered similar capabilities at a lower price point. Features were competitive, with Volvo emphasizing safety and comfort. However, some rivals might have offered more advanced infotainment systems or driver-assistance technology. Reliability is a mixed bag; while Volvo has a reputation for longevity, the XC70 can experience specific issues like ETM problems. The Subaru Outback is generally considered very reliable.

Price: The XC70 was typically more expensive than the Outback when new.

Alternatives:
  • Subaru Outback: A more affordable and arguably more reliable alternative with similar all-wheel-drive capability and cargo space.
  • Audi A4 Allroad (later models): Offers a more luxurious experience and sharper handling, but may be more expensive to maintain.
  • BMW 3 Series Wagon (XDrive): A sportier option, focusing on driving dynamics, but sacrifices some cargo space.

A well-maintained Subaru Outback is often a better or similar alternative due to its lower cost of ownership and strong reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Volvo XC70 a Good Wagon?

The 2009 Volvo XC70 is ideal for individuals or small families seeking a safe, comfortable, and capable wagon with all-wheel drive. It's a good choice for those who appreciate Volvo's reputation for safety and are willing to prioritize comfort over outright sportiness. Whether it's worth buying depends on the individual vehicle's condition and maintenance history.

It's generally worth considering as a used vehicle if you can find one with low mileage, comprehensive service records, and no signs of major issues (like transmission problems or ETM failure). The T6 model offers a noticeable performance upgrade, but the base 3.2 is adequate for most drivers. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential problems before making a purchase.

XC 70 Wagons are the best cars to drive

These wagons are extremely comfortable to drive and meet my needs as to cargo space, my family and my 4 footed pals. I have always enjoyed driving Volvo Wagons back to my first 240.

Great all rounder

Bought from new, now into 50K plus miles with no reliability problems, squeaks or rattles. Great long distance tourer and with the Bi-turbo the old girl can really "lift her skirts" and run. Very Vovo, very safe, very solid feel with great practicallity and good looks. AWD means super road holding while averaging 23.8 MPG on comute and around town on regular gas. Heat/Cool system first class and adequate factory sound system. Well done Volvo.
