The 2008 Volvo XC70 is a wagon, specifically a crossover wagon, known for its blend of car-like handling and SUV-like versatility. Part of the XC70's second generation (2008-2016), it built upon Volvo's reputation for safety and practicality. Key trims included the base XC70 and later, various equipment packages. When new, prices ranged from around $37,000 to $40,000. It stood out due to its standard all-wheel drive, comfortable ride, and reputation for safety, making it popular among families and those needing a capable and comfortable vehicle for all weather conditions.

Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these issues.

What Problems Does the 2008 Volvo XC70 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Volvo XC70 often revolve around the electronic throttle module (ETM), potentially causing stalling, rough idling, or hesitation. The all-wheel-drive system, specifically the angle gear and rear differential, can be prone to leaks and failures, especially if maintenance is neglected. Suspension components, such as struts, control arms, and bushings, tend to wear out relatively quickly, leading to increased road noise and diminished handling.

Other reported issues include problems with the climate control system, such as the blend door actuators failing, leading to inconsistent temperature regulation. Some owners have also reported issues with the sunroof mechanism. While the 2008 XC70 has a generally good reputation for safety, it's crucial to address potential maintenance needs, particularly concerning the AWD system and electronic components. It is important to check the vehicle history for any recalls and ensure that they have been addressed. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes for the AWD system and thorough inspections, is vital for long-term reliability.

How long will the 2008 Volvo XC70 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Volvo XC70 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone, with some even approaching 300,000 miles. Key to longevity is consistent and preventative maintenance, particularly concerning the AWD system, engine oil changes, and transmission services.

Weaknesses over time often relate to the wear and tear of suspension components, such as struts and bushings, as well as potential issues with the electronic throttle module (ETM) and the AWD system's angle gear. Neglecting these areas can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Proper care will extend its usability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Volvo XC70 came standard with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. The standard entertainment system included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input. Optional upgrades included a premium Dynaudio sound system and a navigation system.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but the XC70 offered rear parking sensors as an option. The standout was Volvo's focus on safety. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, front and side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The optional Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) was a notable early driver-assistance technology.

Crash-test ratings were generally excellent. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) typically awarded the XC70 with good ratings in its crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also gave it favorable star ratings for occupant protection in frontal and side-impact crashes. These strong safety ratings were a key selling point for the XC70, aligning with Volvo's long-standing reputation for safety leadership.

2008 Volvo XC70 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Volvo XC70 had an MSRP ranging from approximately $37,000 to $40,000, depending on options and packages. Currently, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.

The XC70 has depreciated significantly, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has desirable options like the premium sound system or BLIS. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage command higher prices, while those with known mechanical issues or high mileage will fetch significantly less. The Volvo brand, while known for safety, doesn't always hold its value as well as some other luxury brands.

2008 Volvo XC70 Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Volvo XC70 is generally considered moderately expensive to own long-term. Insurance costs are typical for its class. Fuel economy, at around 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, is not exceptional, adding to running costs. Maintenance can be pricier than average due to Volvo's use of specific parts and potentially higher labor rates at specialized repair shops. Repairs, especially related to the AWD system and electronic components, can be costly. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial for long-term ownership.

2008 Volvo XC70 Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Volvo XC70 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Volvo XC70 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2008 Volvo XC70 competed with other crossover wagons and SUVs like the Subaru Outback, Audi A4 Allroad (though a slightly different price point), and BMW X3. In terms of performance, the XC70 offered adequate power, but wasn't as sporty as the BMW X3. The Subaru Outback provided similar AWD capability and practicality at a lower price point, but lacked the XC70's perceived luxury and safety features.

Reliability is a mixed bag; while Volvo has a reputation for durability, the XC70 can experience issues as it ages, particularly with the AWD system. The Outback is often considered more reliable overall. Feature-wise, the XC70 offered a good balance of comfort and safety features for its time, but newer vehicles offer more advanced technology.

Alternatives to consider include a newer Subaru Outback for improved reliability and fuel economy at a similar price point. If a more luxurious experience is desired and budget allows, a newer Volvo XC60 or Audi Q5 would offer more modern features and performance. However, for someone specifically seeking a wagon with a reputation for safety and a comfortable ride, the 2008 Volvo XC70 remains a viable option, particularly if found in good condition and at a reasonable price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Volvo XC70 a Good Wagon?

The 2008 Volvo XC70 is ideal for those seeking a comfortable, safe, and capable wagon with all-wheel drive. It's a good choice for families or individuals who need a vehicle for all-weather conditions and light towing. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and price. A well-maintained example with a thorough maintenance history is key. Buying used is the only option, given its age.

It's worth buying *if* you find one in good condition, have it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic familiar with Volvos, and are prepared for potential maintenance costs associated with an older vehicle. Be sure the AWD system is in good working order. It is not recommended for those seeking the latest tech features or ultimate reliability, but a great choice for someone prioritizing safety and utility.

High mileage presented maintenance concerns

My compute was easily 20,000 miles a year. I purchased the car used, it’s a very comfortable vehicle. Great in the rain and snow. Around 150,00 miles the AWD malfunction light appeared on the dash, the car still ran well so at that point it’s a fancy V70. At 160,000 miles the on board computer had to be replaced, that was expensive. At 181,000 miles the check engine light appeared on the dash and that turned out to be a spark plug coil problem. The sunroof drain plugs need to cleaned at least once a year if not garaged. Heading for 200,000 miles, I going to drive it until it drops.

Great car!

I’ve been driving my ‘08 XC70 for around 2 years after buying it used. I’m almost at 200,000 miles and, other than normal maintenance, haven‘t had any issues with it. The large trunk is great for college/ young adults that move around a lot. Hoping to keep this car around for a few more years.

Volvo will never build like that anymore

I owned my XC70 with 170,000 KM for 3 months. xxx: very safe vehicle, has best seats in the segment and lots of cargo space. parts are not expensive like BMW, Mercedes & Audi. If you do well maintenance on your vehicle. She drives for ever ! Neg: Temperature sensor is in the driver side mirror.if not working properly, this sensor makes the engine light on and makes your AC not working too. easy to replace but in most of the time you need to rewire this sensor from driver door. will cost you $1000 more or less (by technician) 2) the engine noise is coming from top the engine. looks like oil trap area is making this noise.

Reliable, comfortable, safe, utilitarian, keeper.

I purchased my 08XC70 at 3 years old with 60K miles. Driver seat is hands down most comfortable ever. This is the best car I've ever owned. Currently at 150K miles. I commute 70 to 100 miles a day, averaging 22-23 MPG year round. Non turbo straight 6 is no race motor, but respectable power and economy for a 2 ton wagon. Hauls almost anything inside or on top. Still looks great, no rust anywhere. Put new struts/shocks in last year. With new Kumho Solus tires, rides like new. Been up and down the east coast over a dozen times and enjoy every trip. Couldn't recommend a car or a brand more. Minor issues with some exterior trim and a front windshield leak in heavy rain.

New to me but 11 years old

Just purchased it used last week. So far so good. Has 133K miles on it and engine sounds great. Interior has held up well, but some minor electronics have failed like one blind spot alert and turn signal stalk. Both are cheap fixes though.

Third Volvo I've owned.

A great family car. Structurally sound, dependable, good for storage and long trips. Amenities for a 2008 vehicle are above par. Would recommend this car dealership.

Wagon Man on February 21, 2018

Best Volvo I've had

I'm a wagon man from way back. In fact, I've owned a 240 DL, two Subarus, an Audi Avant and an 05 XC70, which I had up to 140K before I totaled it last summer. Looked and looked and finally went back to the XC70. Found this one at the dealer with under 60K. I miss the heated seats of the old wagon (if you're looking, make sure you get it) and the gas mileage is slightly lower. But this car is a tank. I'll have it for 10 years or longer.
