2008 Chevrolet Suburban Review: 2008's Best Full-Size SUV, but Not Nearly Worth the Price

Rating: 4.63
Based on 36 Owner Reviews â–¶
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, part of a long line dating back to 1935. Its body style is characterized by a large, boxy design offering ample passenger and cargo space. Model years for this generation ran from 2007 to 2014. Key trims include LS, LT, and LTZ. When new, the pricing ranged from approximately $35,000 to $50,000+. Its popularity stems from its seating capacity (up to nine), towing capability, and overall versatility for large families and cargo hauling.
The Good

The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban offers a blend of capability and comfort. Practically, its strong towing capacity and spacious interior are major advantages. Emotionally, it provides a sense of security and road presence. While not the most fuel-efficient, its robust engine and generally reliable mechanics appeal to those needing a dependable workhorse. Ride comfort is also a strong point.

The Bad

The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban has known weaknesses. Fuel economy is a major drawback. Some owners report issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, leading to oil consumption. Also, watch for potential transmission problems in higher mileage examples. Rust can be a concern in colder climates, especially underneath the vehicle. Electrical glitches are occasionally reported.

What Problems Does the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban has several frequently reported problems. Active Fuel Management (AFM) issues, leading to excessive oil consumption, are common. This often requires costly repairs. Transmission problems, such as slipping or hard shifting, are also reported, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Another concern is the failure of the electronic throttle control (ETC) system, which can cause stalling or reduced power. Some owners have experienced issues with the HVAC system, including problems with the blend door actuator and compressor. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas that use road salt, affecting the undercarriage and body panels. Recalls for this model year have included issues related to airbag deployment and fuel system components. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues, and proper maintenance is crucial to mitigate potential problems. Regular oil changes and addressing any unusual noises or performance issues promptly can extend the vehicle's lifespan. Checking for rust regularly and applying rust inhibitors can also help preserve the body.

How long will the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban last?

A well-maintained 2008 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing any issues promptly, some owners have exceeded 300,000 miles. However, long-term durability is heavily dependent on maintenance habits. Weaknesses over time include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and the aforementioned AFM and transmission problems. Suspension components may also require replacement as the vehicle ages. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban offered a range of built-in tech and features for its time. Base models typically included a basic AM/FM radio with CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with Bose speakers and rear-seat entertainment systems with DVD players. Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included options like rear parking sensors. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and stability control. Airbags included front airbags and side-curtain airbags for all rows. Optional features included navigation systems, heated seats, and power-adjustable pedals.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally awarded the 2008 Suburban four or five stars for frontal and side-impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings varied, but generally showed good performance in moderate overlap front tests. However, it's important to check specific crash test results for the 2008 model year, as ratings can vary depending on the test and vehicle configuration. Note that the lack of advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking might be a disadvantage compared to newer vehicles.

2008 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban ranged in price from approximately $35,000 for a base LS model to over $50,000 for a fully loaded LTZ. Currently, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to the vehicle's age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it's a 2WD or 4WD model. Lower mileage, well-maintained examples command higher prices. The demand for large SUVs also influences resale value.

2008 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban is generally considered costly to own. Insurance rates are typically moderate to high due to its size and potential repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, leading to significant fuel expenses. Maintenance can be expensive, especially if repairs are needed for common issues like AFM or transmission problems. Long-term ownership costs can accumulate quickly due to these factors. While the initial purchase price may be appealing, potential buyers should factor in these ongoing expenses.

2008 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

Key rivals to the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban include the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon XL, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Suburban offers comparable engine power and towing capacity to its rivals. Features are generally similar across the class, although the Sequoia might offer slightly more standard equipment. Reliability is a key area where the Suburban can lag behind the Sequoia, which is known for its longevity. The Expedition offers similar reliability, although Ford had issues of its own. Price-wise, the Suburban often falls in the middle of the pack. For those prioritizing reliability and willing to spend more, the Toyota Sequoia is a better alternative. The GMC Yukon XL is essentially a rebadged Suburban, so it shares many of the same strengths and weaknesses. The Ford Expedition offers similar capabilities, but its interior might feel less spacious. If reliability is a top concern, and budget allows, the Sequoia is worth considering. Otherwise, a well-maintained Suburban can still be a good value for its size and capabilities. One should consider getting a pre-purchase inspection.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families needing substantial passenger and cargo space, as well as significant towing capacity. Whether it's worth buying depends on your priorities. If budget is a primary concern and you need a large, capable SUV, a used Suburban can be a decent value. However, be prepared for higher running costs and potential repairs. It's crucial to thoroughly inspect any used Suburban before purchasing, paying close attention to common problem areas. Opting for a higher trim like LT or LTZ can add comfort features, but also increases the initial price. A pre-purchase inspection is strongly recommended to assess its mechanical condition and identify potential issues.

Make them with front split bench seats

I’m looking at an 08 LZT, I might buy one Monday . Only problem I have is no front split bench . My fog can’t lay down. I like the luxury the sunroof, but I was m frustrated trying to find a 08 Sierra like I had. I sold it to get a boat and I’ve decided to sell the boat. I’m short in cash buying another sirrra as they can go for 14k. I have 10,900 to work with. Being patient is important but my black lab seems to like the bucket seat in my suv! Still can’t lay down very well

I loved my Suburban so much I bought another one!

I bought my 2008 Chevrolet Suburban preowned in 2013. I wanted another heavy riding SUV after owning my 1996 for many years! In between the 96 and 08, I owned a 2003 GMC Envoy which was a nice vehicle, but the fuel mileage was the same as the Suburban, and without the luxury of the room and large SUV feel. When I test drove the 2008 Suburban I felt comfortable and safe! I bought it with 99,000 miles on it, and the dealer had just rebuilt the engine under the GM extended warranty (this was a known issue with the 2007 and 2008 model years). I kept it for 6 years and until 180,000 miles. I elected to replace it because the body was starting to rust, and at that mileage I didn't want to put the money into it. Throughout the 6 years of ownership, only the expected wear items such as brakes, tires and a wheel bearing were replaced, but it always ran well! I just loved my time with it, and was sad to see it get traded in ( I have kept up with the people who purchased it,and it is now at 200,000 miles with no major mechanical repairs). I would buy another one in a heartbeat! I loved it so much I made sure I purchased another Suburban (this time a 2018 Premier), but I still miss the 2008, but love the new one! It was a great vehicle that was reliable, comfortable and safe!

Most reliable car I’ve EVER owned!

I’m a big guy with a lot of family. This SUV has all of the space you could ever need! The most comfortable ride hands down. The Cadillac chassis makes you forget that you’re in a Chevy. Perfect for local drives and long drives. The DVD player with the head phones keeps the kids entertained while I get to hear my music. Guaranteed to by another Suburban, matter of fact, I’ll ALWAYS own a suburban after owning this one.

Beast in the snow but just an ok value.

We bought the Suburban brand new and I will say this - it is SO good in the snow! But that being said we just sold it last week with 86,000 miles and too many things were going wrong. Admittedly, some items were likely related to corrosion and living in NY with the winters but it was garaged and not driven a lot. All of the door handles came loose, the back panel on the lift gate that holds the camera and emblem kept falling off, the console screen wouldn't work, suspension system light, a strange noise that the dealership could never diagnose, rear windows wouldn't always work. AC went twice. At one point the hydraulics for the rear lift gate went - thankfully no one was standing under it. It could have broken some bones! We decided that even though the truck still looked good and had low mileage that we should get out from under it. I will say that for it being 11 years old and paying approx $55k to recover $11,500, I am happy enough. It was great in the snow and great for the whole family and when we traveled with a bunch of gear.

Quite a lemon car.

Way too many problems, engine, differential, etc. Bought car used and dealer misrepresented the condition of this vehicle. The manufacturer should have been held liable for all the problems.
