The 2016 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, part of a long line dating back to the 1930s. This generation, introduced in 2015, is known for its spaciousness and capability. Key trims include LS, LT, and LTZ (later Premier). New, the pricing ranged from approximately $50,000 to $70,000+. It's popular due to its ability to comfortably haul large families and cargo, with robust towing capacity. Its size and capability are its defining traits.
The Good

The 2016 Suburban offers a blend of practical and emotional appeal. Practically, it boasts immense cargo and passenger space, strong towing capacity, and a reputation for durability. Emotionally, it projects a sense of safety and capability, allowing owners to tackle large tasks with confidence. Comfort is enhanced by a smooth ride and available premium features. Performance is adequate for daily driving and towing.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2016 Suburban include its large size, which can make it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces and park. Fuel economy is also a drawback. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can lead to engine problems over time. Suspension issues are also something to be aware of.

What Problems Does the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban include issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can cause excessive oil consumption and potential engine damage over time. Some owners have also reported problems with the infotainment system, including freezing, lagging, and Bluetooth connectivity issues. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or slipping, have also been noted.
Recalls for the 2016 Suburban have addressed issues such as faulty airbags and potential problems with the fuel pump. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the AFM system and the overall durability of the transmission under heavy use. Suspension components, particularly the magnetic ride control system on the LTZ/Premier trim, can also be expensive to repair. It is important to check the vehicle's history for any previous recalls and to have a mechanic inspect the AFM system and transmission before purchasing a used 2016 Suburban. Some electrical issues, such as problems with the door locks and window regulators, have also been reported, though less frequently. Owners have also described issues with the AC condenser.

How long will the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone, suggesting a lifespan of 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses include the AFM system (potential oil consumption), transmission (especially under heavy towing), and potential corrosion in areas with harsh winters. Regular maintenance and proactive repairs can mitigate these issues and extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Chevrolet Suburban offers a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay (later in the model year) and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment features include available rear-seat entertainment systems with DVD players.
Driver-assistance features include available lane departure warning, forward collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show good overall safety performance. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings may vary depending on the specific test and trim level, but overall it earned a respectable rating. The LTZ/Premier trim offers additional safety features like blind-spot monitoring. These features aim to enhance safety and driver awareness. The vehicle does not have standard front automated emergency braking.

2016 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban ranged from approximately $50,000 for the base LS trim to over $70,000 for a fully-equipped LTZ/Premier model. Current used market prices typically range from $25,000 to $40,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is significant, but Suburbans hold their value relatively well compared to other SUVs due to their reputation for durability and high demand for large SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (LTZ/Premier models hold value better), and the presence of desirable options like four-wheel drive and the rear-seat entertainment system.

2016 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Chevrolet Suburban is generally costly to own. Insurance rates are higher due to its size and value. Fuel costs are significant, given its poor fuel economy. Maintenance, including oil changes and tire replacements, is comparable to other large SUVs. However, repairs, especially for the AFM system, transmission, or magnetic ride control (on LTZ/Premier models), can be expensive. Long-term ownership requires careful budgeting for potential repairs. It's not an economical choice.

2016 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Chevrolet Suburban competes with the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon XL (its corporate twin), and Toyota Sequoia. The Suburban excels in cargo space and passenger capacity compared to the Expedition. The Yukon XL offers similar performance and features, with styling differences being the primary differentiator. The Sequoia offers comparable reliability but lacks the Suburban's refined interior and advanced features.
In terms of performance, the Suburban's V8 engine is competitive but not class-leading. The Expedition offers a more powerful turbocharged engine in later model years. The Sequoia provides a similar V8 experience.
In terms of reliability, the Sequoia often scores higher in long-term reliability ratings.
Price-wise, the Suburban is generally comparable to the Expedition and Yukon XL but more expensive than the Sequoia.
Alternatives to the Suburban include the aforementioned Ford Expedition (for a more modern driving experience) and the Toyota Sequoia (for potentially better reliability). If maximum cargo space is not a priority, consider the shorter Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon.

Ranks #877 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families needing maximum passenger and cargo capacity, and those who frequently tow. It's worth buying if these needs outweigh concerns about fuel economy and potential repair costs. A used 2016 Suburban can be a good value, but a thorough inspection is crucial, especially checking the AFM system and transmission. The LT trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid models with a history of neglected maintenance. Consider a newer model year if budget allows, as they may have addressed some of the reliability concerns.

Most versatile vehicle that GM Has in the lineup!

The 130 inches of joy on wheels. It will fit in any parking lot. Turn tight enough to negotiate small town America. And move on into traffic and merge with the ease of a six passenger auto!
