The 2013 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, known for its spaciousness and capability. Part of the eleventh generation (2007-2014), it offered three trims: LS, LT, and LTZ. New, the price ranged from approximately $43,000 to $60,000. Its large cargo capacity, comfortable seating for up to nine passengers, and robust towing capabilities make it a popular choice for large families and those needing to haul heavy loads.
The Good

The 2013 Chevrolet Suburban offers powerful performance with its V8 engine, ensuring confident towing and hauling. Its spacious interior provides comfort for passengers, appealing to families. What Problems Does the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban often revolve around its Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can lead to oil consumption issues and potential engine damage over time. Some owners have also reported issues with the transmission, including rough shifting or failure, especially at higher mileages. The electronic stability control (ESC) system can sometimes exhibit sensor malfunctions or false activations.
Recalls for the 2013 Suburban were issued for issues such as potential problems with the second-row seatbelts and unintended activation of the airbags. Long-term reliability concerns tend to center on the longevity of the transmission and the AFM system. Rust, particularly in areas with salted roads, can also be a long-term concern affecting body panels and undercarriage components. It's crucial to check the vehicle history for any reported repairs related to these issues and to ensure that all applicable recalls have been addressed by the previous owner.

How long will the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reliable service for 10-15 years. Key to longevity is consistent oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing any issues with the AFM system promptly. Weaknesses over time often include suspension components wearing out, rust development, and potential issues with the electrical system. The interior trim can also show wear and tear with heavy use, particularly in high-traffic areas.

I have driven this Suburban 2500 since it was new in 2013 and it has a comfortable ride, 4 wheel drive for the snow and ice, and has a trailering package for those times when pulling a trailer is necessary. It has always been garaged and has no rust.
Michael D
I've had this SUV for the past 6 1/2 years and it has been very reliable. Plenty of leg room for 7 passengers. New transmission and tires recently done.
Sean
No vehicle I would rather put my family in. Very reliable/ safe vehicle and low maintenance. I will continue to own one in the future.
Negative Owner Reviews
3rd Suburban
I bought the 2013 LTX suburban 4WD with all the options. I love the features of USB port, Nav, lots of storage, great audio, hard drive. What I don't like is the transmission which is difficult to get used to. Seems to shift at inappropriate times. What I really hate is the front seats. They are hard as concrete. Maybe it they are hard due to the cooling feature, but for a large SUV they are the most uncomfortable I have ever sat in. After a 2-3 hour drive you backside is in pain. What is up with these "stadium hard" seats? I drive a lot so I am trading it in to get something more comfortable. Not sure what yet.....Very disappointed in this version of a Chevy classic. Expected more for 50K +.....

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Chevrolet Suburban offers a range of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include OnStar, which provides emergency assistance, remote door unlocking, and vehicle diagnostics. Entertainment features include an AM/FM/CD stereo system, with higher trims offering a Bose premium audio system and rear-seat DVD entertainment.
Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern vehicles, but the LT and LTZ trims offer rear parking sensors and available blind-spot monitoring. Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a full complement of airbags.
Optional features included a navigation system, a rearview camera, and power-adjustable pedals. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA generally show good performance, with four-star and five-star ratings in various categories. However, it's important to consult the specific NHTSA ratings for the 2013 model year for detailed information. IIHS ratings should also be checked for complete safety data.

2013 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban ranged from approximately $43,000 to $60,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $30,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Suburban holds its value relatively well due to its reputation for durability and its strong demand as a family vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance records, mileage, and any accident history. Higher trims like the LTZ tend to command higher resale prices.

2013 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Chevrolet Suburban is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums can be higher due to its size and potential for damage. Fuel economy is poor, leading to significant fuel costs. Maintenance and repair costs can also be higher than average, especially when addressing issues like the AFM system or transmission. While durable, its size and complexity contribute to increased long-term ownership expenses compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

2013 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Chevrolet Suburban competes with vehicles like the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada. In terms of performance, the Suburban offers comparable V8 power to its rivals. Features are generally similar across the class, with each offering a range of comfort and convenience options. Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Suburban has a solid reputation, the Toyota Sequoia is often considered more reliable. Price-wise, the Suburban falls in the middle of the pack.
The Ford Expedition offers similar towing capacity and interior space, while the Sequoia boasts a strong reputation for longevity. The Nissan Armada is typically priced lower, making it a more budget-friendly option.
A potentially better alternative depends on priorities: if reliability is paramount, the Sequoia is a strong contender. If budget is a major concern, the Armada might be a suitable option. The Expedition offers a balanced package similar to the Suburban.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families or those who frequently need to transport multiple passengers and cargo. It's also well-suited for individuals who require significant towing capacity. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used 2013 Suburban can be a good value if purchased at a reasonable price and with a thorough inspection. Opting for a higher trim like the LT or LTZ provides more features and comfort. However, be prepared for higher fuel and maintenance costs. Ensure any potential purchase has a clean vehicle history and has addressed any outstanding recalls. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic.

Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned!

I have driven this Suburban 2500 since it was new in 2013 and it has a comfortable ride, 4 wheel drive for the snow and ice, and has a trailering package for those times when pulling a trailer is necessary. It has always been garaged and has no rust.

Engine needed replacing at 99K

Its a beautiful piece of junk-holds a lot of people, very comfortable, unfortunately if the engine is crap that doesn't mean anything. An engine should last longer than 99K

Make squeaky noise when it's too cold, swerving.

Plenty of seat fit my family perfectly, children are comfortable with seating. Just which the dealership was honest. Still waiting for the dealership to fix my SUV this has been since July.

The new SUV I was looking for.

This SUV is even more large size that my Yukon. I am getting used to it everyday. Even though some of the features are different, I am loving it.
