The Chevrolet Suburban, an iconic full-size SUV, boasts a history dating back to 1935. The 2023 model continues this legacy with a spacious body-on-frame design. Key trims include LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. Pricing generally ranges from $58,000 to $80,000+. Its immense cargo capacity, seating for up to nine, and robust towing capabilities make it a favorite for large families and those needing serious hauling power.
The Good
The 2023 Suburban offers a blend of powerful performance, especially with the available V8 engines, and immense practicality with its vast cargo space and comfortable seating. The independent rear suspension improves ride quality and the bold design exudes confidence. For emotional buyers, it represents capability and adventure; for practical buyers, it's about space and utility.
The Bad
The 2023 Suburban's size can be a disadvantage in urban environments, making parking challenging. Fuel economy is relatively poor compared to smaller SUVs. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electronic components. The higher trim levels can be quite expensive, and reliability, while generally good, isn't flawless.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban Have?
While the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is generally reliable, some common issues have been reported. Infotainment system glitches, including screen freezes and connectivity problems, are among the most frequent complaints. Some owners have also experienced issues with the advanced driver-assistance systems, such as lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control malfunctioning. Additionally, isolated cases of transmission issues and electrical problems have surfaced.
Recalls for the 2023 model, and potentially affecting it, should be checked on the NHTSA website using the VIN. Past Suburbans (particularly models from the mid-2000s) had some transmission issues but improvements have been made. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the complexity of the electronics and the potential for wear and tear on suspension components, particularly on models frequently used for towing or off-roading. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for ensuring long-term reliability.
How long will the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban last?
With proper maintenance, a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and tire rotations. The engine and transmission are generally durable, but potential long-term weaknesses include the suspension system (especially the air suspension, if equipped), and the electronic components, which can become prone to failure over time. Rust can also be a factor in regions with harsh winters.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is packed with technology. Standard features include a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features like a Bose audio system, rear-seat entertainment system with dual 12.6-inch screens, and a head-up display. Driver-assistance features include forward collision alert, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and rear park assist.
Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and enhanced automatic emergency braking. Safety is a priority, and the Suburban typically performs well in crash tests. The NHTSA provides crash-test ratings; checking their website for the 2023 model is recommended. The large size of the Suburban also contributes to its perceived safety. The array of tech features aims to provide both convenience and peace of mind for drivers and passengers.

2023 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value
When new, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban ranged from approximately $58,000 for the base LS trim to over $80,000 for the High Country. Current used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim level, but expect to see prices ranging from $50,000 to $75,000. The Suburban holds its value reasonably well due to its popularity and utility. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (higher trims retain more value), and the presence of desirable options like four-wheel drive and advanced safety features.
2023 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its size and value. Fuel costs are significant given its poor fuel economy. Maintenance, while not exorbitant, is more expensive than smaller vehicles. Repairs can also be pricey, especially for complex components. Long-term ownership costs, including depreciation, fuel, insurance, and maintenance, make it one of the more expensive SUVs to keep on the road.

How Does the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban competes with the Ford Expedition Max, GMC Yukon XL, and Jeep Wagoneer L. In terms of performance, the Suburban offers a range of engine options comparable to its rivals. Feature-wise, it's generally on par, with similar technology and comfort features available. Reliability is comparable to the Ford Expedition Max; however, the GMC Yukon XL, being a sibling vehicle, shares many of the same strengths and weaknesses.
Price-wise, the Suburban is similar to its competitors. The Jeep Wagoneer L offers a slightly more luxurious interior feel. If a slightly smaller vehicle with better fuel economy is acceptable, consider a three-row crossover SUV like the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander, although they won't offer the same towing capacity or cargo space. The Ford Expedition Max is a very similar alternative, offering a comparable driving experience and features. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and preferences.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families needing ample passenger and cargo space, or for those who frequently tow. It's worth buying if space and towing capacity are priorities, and if the higher ownership costs are manageable. A used model can offer significant savings, but ensure it has been well-maintained. The LT trim offers a good balance of features and value. If off-roading is a concern, the Z71 is a good choice. Consider the diesel engine for better fuel economy if long highway trips are frequent.

Have owned other big vehicles like 3/4 ton 2500 Dodge RamHave owned other big vehicles like 3/4 ton 2500 Dodge Ram Hemi. I got a Duramax diesel engine in this Suburban. Saves on gas, believe it or not. Very comfortable, very smooth ride, and very quiet even after installing 2†lift and bigger tires. Have the Premier package. Definitely worth every bit of my money. Very heavy duty compared to the new 2024 Ford Expedition Max that I drove for quite some time. Has been very reliable. GM has been quick to fix any recalls. Have only had one recall. Compared to my Ram, it can keep up with all the towing and hauling just as much as my Hemi did. Turn radius is amazing. No problems! The 3.5 average rating on here is not accurate. Go test drive one for yourself.

Nice spacious SUVBeen driving Suburbans since 2010. Love the amount of cargo space, and towing capacity. You won't be disappointed if chauffeuring kids and gear about. Repairs are better than average in my experience and many non dealer shops are out there who work on Chevys.
