Drew B | March 31, 2025
The Chevrolet Suburban, an iconic full-size SUV, has a long history as a family hauler and cargo carrier. The 2020 model, part of the 12th generation (2015-2020), comes in a traditional SUV body style. Key trims include LS, LT, and Premier. Pricing ranged approximately from $52,000 to $75,000 when new. Its immense size, seating for up to nine, and impressive cargo capacity are major selling points, making it ideal for large families and those needing substantial space.
The Good

The 2020 Suburban offers robust performance with its V8 engines and substantial towing capability, appealing to practical needs. Its spacious and comfortable interior, especially on higher trims, provides a sense of luxury and security, satisfying emotional desires for a safe and capable family vehicle. While not exceptionally efficient, it delivers dependable reliability for the long haul.

The Bad

The 2020 Suburban's weaknesses include its large size, which can make it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Fuel economy is also a concern. Potential buyers should watch out for transmission issues, particularly in earlier models of this generation. The infotainment system can sometimes be glitchy, and some owners report issues with the active fuel management system.

What Problems Does the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban, while generally reliable, has exhibited some frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly hard shifting or slipping, are a concern for some owners. The Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, designed to improve fuel economy, has also been known to cause problems, including excessive oil consumption. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or lagging.
Recalls for the 2020 Suburban have been issued for issues like improper airbag deployment and faulty brake components. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the AFM system. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and addressing any warning signs promptly, can help mitigate these issues. It's advisable to check the vehicle history report for any previous recalls or service records before purchasing a used 2020 Suburban. While not specific to the 2020 model year, the generation (2015-2020) is known for these types of recurring complaints across multiple years.

How long will the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, translating to 10-15 years of service. Owner data indicates that consistent oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial.
Long-term durability can be affected by the AFM system, potentially leading to engine issues if not properly maintained. Suspension components and the infotainment system are other areas that might require attention over time. Rust can also become a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Regular washing and undercarriage cleaning can help prevent corrosion.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban offers a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

Tech & Entertainment: Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer a Bose premium audio system and navigation. An optional rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player is available.

Driver-Assistance: Standard features include a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Available driver-assistance features include lane keep assist, forward collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Safety Features: Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags.

Optional Features: Magnetic Ride Control (adaptive suspension), head-up display, and a suite of advanced safety technologies are available on higher trims.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban received mixed crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Always check official sources for the most accurate and up-to-date safety information.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban had a starting MSRP of around $52,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $75,000 when new. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and trim level, but generally range from $35,000 to $55,000. Depreciation is relatively slow for Suburbans due to their popularity and utility. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, trim level, and the presence of desirable options like the 6.2L engine and advanced safety features. A clean vehicle history and consistent maintenance records also enhance resale value.

2020 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its size and value. Fuel costs are significant, given its poor fuel economy. Maintenance, while not overly expensive, can add up over time, especially with potential issues like the AFM system. Repairs, particularly for the transmission or infotainment system, can also be costly. Overall, the Suburban is not an economical choice, but its practicality and capabilities may justify the expense for some buyers.

Would I buy it again... You bet ya!

2020 Suburban Premier has all the bells and whistles! We love the comfort and safety of this vehicle. Even the gas mileage is not as "terrible" as we feared it could be, averaging for our driving needs about 18.7 mpg. There are a couple of issues with our particular vehicle that are issues, however... the running boards that are supposed to automatically roll out, don't always! I have gotten underneath and rinsed the joints with WD40 and lubricated them, and it is better, but still not 100%. The second row seats (captain chairs) do not adjust forward and backward. I am a tall fellow (6'3"), so you do not want to sit behind me! That is simply a design/engineering flaw. We are currently having sporadic issues with the tire inflation sensors and they are probably starting to need replacement. Buy a used car, expect some minor repairs! Would I buy it again? ABSOLUTELY!

We love our new Suburban!

This vehicle is exactly what we wanted and is much easier to drive than we expected, considering how big it is. The ride is really smooth, and the vehicle seems to be really well-built. We love the interior features.

Good & Bad

I have owned my 2020 Suburban for 7 months. In all fairness, the main reason I purchased this vehicle was for its passenger capacity. Thus, I was willing to sacrifice/ overlook a few things. Nevertheless, not all is bad. In fact, the ride is very smooth and quiete. Engine and transmission shifting is decent for Such a heavy SUV. I’m a little worried about the transmission because on multiple occasions I have heard a strange noice when putting the car in reverse. The two most annoying items for me is the reverse parking camera. This has to be the Cheapest quality camera in the entire market. Specialty in the evening or when it’s raining. I’m actually going to ask my service advisor if this is normal or my camera is defective. It’s BAD Bad Bad. Next worst thing, radio. Lol I have to laugh at this. Let’s just say, the suburban is technology challenged. Thank God I mostly hear news but maybe it’s because the music sounds horrible. Oh don’t even try toggling your Blue tooth devices. It just doesn’t happen. The most important / frustrating item for me is my Air conditioner. Yes it blows cold air, sometimes. In all seriousness, my evaporator and other parts where replaced by the dealer 2 months ago and It worked again. Guess what, it’s doing it again. Well, I will need to take it back for more exploratory repair. My original service advisor told me that it would take 2 weeks for repair. Now that wasn’t great news either. As you can see, my suburban / GM experience hasn’t been a walk in the park. I really want to support our American manufactures / brothers but, we need to take better pride in our engineering and craftsmanship to stay in the game.
