Rating: 4.54
Based on 70 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, part of the eleventh generation that ran from 2007 to 2014. It's known for its spaciousness and towing capacity. Key trims included the LS, LT, and LTZ. New pricing ranged from approximately $35,000 to $45,000. Its popularity stems from its ability to comfortably haul large families and cargo while offering truck-like capabilities. The Suburban's longevity and size are significant factors in its appeal.
The Good

The 2007 Suburban offers robust performance with its V8 engines, appealing to practical buyers needing towing capability and space. Comfortable seating and a smooth ride create a positive emotional connection. While not fuel-efficient, it provides a good value proposition for those prioritizing size and utility over MPG. Its dependability, though not perfect, contributes to its lasting appeal.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2007 Suburban include potential transmission issues, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Electrical problems, such as issues with the door locks and windows, are also frequently reported. Fuel economy is poor, and the interior materials may show wear and tear over time. Keep an eye out for oil consumption issues in some engines.

What Problems Does the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban include issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system on the 5.3L V8, leading to excessive oil consumption. This can cause engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Transmission problems, such as hard shifting or complete failure, are also common, particularly in vehicles with higher mileage. Electrical glitches, including malfunctioning door locks, windows, and instrument panel lights, are another area of concern.

Recalls for the 2007 Suburban have addressed issues such as potential brake light failures and problems with the fuel system. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability can be affected by rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. The suspension components, including shocks and struts, may also require replacement over time.

Specific to the 2007 model year, some owners have reported problems with the stabilitrak system. While not necessarily a widespread issue it is important to keep in mind.

Regular maintenance, including frequent oil changes and addressing any unusual noises or behaviors promptly, can help mitigate some of these long-term reliability concerns.

How long will the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With good maintenance, a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with regular servicing, including oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and timely repairs. However, long-term durability is influenced by driving conditions and maintenance habits. Weaknesses over time include the aforementioned AFM oil consumption issues, potential transmission problems, and rust in certain climates. Suspension components and electrical systems may also require attention as the vehicle ages. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Chevrolet Suburban offered a range of tech and safety features for its time. Built-in tech included a standard AM/FM radio with CD player, and higher trims offered a Bose premium sound system and rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player. Navigation was an optional feature available on higher trims.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included features like cruise control and rear parking sensors (available on some trims). Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control (StabiliTrak), and front and side airbags. Optional features included OnStar, which provided emergency assistance and remote diagnostics.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2007 Suburban are generally good, with 4 or 5 stars in most frontal and side impact categories. However, rollover ratings were lower, reflecting the higher center of gravity of SUVs. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may have conducted some tests, but specific ratings should be checked for the 2007 model year. Keep in mind safety technology has advanced greatly since 2007. Modern vehicles offer advanced safety and driver assist technologies not found in the 2007 model.

2007 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban LS had a starting price around $35,000, with higher trims reaching up to $45,000 or more. As of 2024, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and geographical location. Models with lower mileage, well-documented maintenance records, and desirable options (like 4WD or a premium sound system) command higher prices. High fuel costs also negatively affect resale value.

2007 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Chevrolet Suburban is generally considered costly to own. Insurance rates are moderate, but fuel costs are high due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, particularly as the vehicle ages, with potential issues like transmission problems and AFM-related oil consumption. Long-term ownership costs can quickly add up, making it less economical compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential.

2007 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet Suburban competes with other full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Suburban offers comparable V8 power and towing capacity to its rivals. Feature-wise, it's generally competitive, though some competitors might offer slightly more advanced technology for the era.

Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Suburban has a reputation for longevity, it also has known issues like AFM-related oil consumption. The Toyota Sequoia is often considered more reliable overall. Price-wise, used Suburbans are generally competitively priced within their class.

Alternatives to the 2007 Suburban include:
  • Toyota Sequoia: More reliable, but potentially more expensive on the used market.
  • Ford Expedition: Similar in size and features, with slightly different engine options.
  • GMC Yukon XL: Essentially the same vehicle as the Suburban, but with potentially different trim levels and styling.
If reliability is a top priority, the Sequoia might be a better choice. However, the Suburban offers a good balance of space, capability, and price.

Ranks #1026 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for buyers needing substantial passenger and cargo space, along with significant towing capability. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if the price is right and a thorough inspection reveals no major issues, particularly regarding the transmission and AFM system. A well-maintained LT trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid models with excessive mileage or signs of neglect. Be prepared for higher fuel and maintenance costs. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Sequoia.

I have had it for 11 years, still plenty of miles

These Suburbans last forever. Still has plenty of miles left in it. This Suburban is in great condition, loaded, 3rd-row seating, Nav, Bach-up-camera, Factory Dvd screen, and headphone.

The most comfortable & functional SUV I have owned

This SUV is highly comfortable and sits high for clear view of road. Has perfect lighting for all 3 seats., front and rear stereo and heater controls, many lighter sockets for phone charging and devices, lots of legroom, power driver and passenger seats with seat heaters when desired. Rear windows roll all the way down; not like previous vehicles. The lighting on the exterior is fantastic with separate DRL's, Low beam, high beam, and fog lights. The brights really light up the dark roads and deer crossing road. Service lights tell you exactly what may need service such as low coolant, etc. I really ca't say enough about this vehicle. The C1500 more fuel efficient than 4WD. Can hardly feel this SUV running. I love it!!

Best version of Suburban, z71 package is hot

A Suburban can’t be beat for hauling kids, adults, gear etc... Roadtrips and daily drives in all weather (4x4) make this the preferred vehicle for households across the country.
