The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, part of a long line dating back to 1935, known for its expansive interior and towing capability. Available as a 1500 or 2500 series, it offers seating for up to nine passengers. Key trims include the LS, LT, and LTZ. Its popularity stems from its ability to haul large families and cargo while providing a comfortable ride. New, the price ranged from around $42,000 to $55,000.

The Good

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban offers strong V8 performance and considerable towing capacity, appealing to practical buyers. Its spacious interior ensures passenger comfort on long trips. While not the most fuel-efficient, its proven reliability and iconic, commanding presence satisfy emotional needs. It's a solid value for families needing vast space and truck-like capabilities.

The Bad

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban's known weaknesses include its lower fuel economy compared to smaller SUVs. Potential buyers should watch out for oil consumption issues, transmission problems, and potential failures of the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters and salted roads.

What Problems Does the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban often revolve around excessive oil consumption, particularly with the 5.3L V8 engine. This can be due to faulty valve seals or issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. Transmission issues, such as hard shifting or slipping, are also commonly reported. Other areas of concern include the air conditioning system, which can experience failures, and the stability control system. Some owners have reported issues with the electrical system, including problems with the door locks and power windows.

Recalls for the 2012 Suburban have included issues related to the side-impact airbags and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns center on the longevity of the AFM system and the potential for related engine damage. The suspension components, especially the Autoride system (if equipped), can require maintenance or replacement over time. Rust can be a problem in areas with road salt use. It's important to check the vehicle's service history for any evidence of these common problems and ensure that any recall work has been performed.

How long will the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Chevrolet Suburban can easily exceed 200,000 miles, potentially reaching 300,000 miles or more. Owners who diligently follow maintenance schedules, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system services, can expect a long lifespan. However, the AFM system remains a potential long-term weakness, often requiring attention or even disabling to prevent engine damage. Suspension components, especially the Autoride shocks, may need replacement around 100,000 miles, affecting ride quality. Rust prevention is crucial for longevity, especially in colder climates.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban offers a decent array of tech, entertainment, and safety features for its time. Standard features include tri-zone climate control, OnStar connectivity, and a basic audio system. Higher trims like the LT and LTZ add leather upholstery, upgraded Bose audio systems, and power-adjustable pedals. Optional features include a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player, a navigation system, and a rearview camera.

Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern vehicles but include features like StabiliTrak stability control, traction control, and antilock brakes. Safety features consist of front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for all three rows. The 2012 Suburban received good, but not perfect, crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). While it performed well in frontal and side-impact tests, its rollover rating was lower. Always verify current crash test results on official sites.

The built-in tech is basic by today's standards, with no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The entertainment system is sufficient for keeping passengers occupied on long trips, but its dated interface is noticeable. OnStar provided emergency assistance and vehicle diagnostics, but a subscription was required. Overall, the 2012 Suburban's technology is functional but not cutting-edge.

2012 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban had an original MSRP ranging from approximately $42,000 to $55,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $25,000, varying based on mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation has been significant, but Suburbans tend to hold their value relatively well compared to other SUVs due to their reputation for durability and towing capacity. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable features like 4WD and the rear entertainment system.

2012 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban is not an economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs tend to be higher due to its size and value. Fuel economy is poor, leading to substantial fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can also be significant, especially considering potential issues like oil consumption and transmission problems. While some parts are readily available and relatively inexpensive, other repairs, such as those related to the AFM system or Autoride suspension, can be costly. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for higher-than-average expenses.

2012 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban competes with other full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Suburban's V8 engine offers comparable power and towing capacity to its rivals. Feature-wise, it provides a similar level of amenities, although some competitors might offer slightly more advanced technology for that year. Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Suburban is generally durable, it is prone to some specific issues like oil consumption. The Sequoia is often praised for its reliability, potentially making it a better alternative if that's a top priority.

Price-wise, the Suburban tends to be competitive with its peers. The Ford Expedition offers a similar driving experience and feature set. The Nissan Armada often comes in at a slightly lower price point but may not match the Suburban's overall refinement. If interior space is paramount and reliability is a concern, the Toyota Sequoia is a strong contender, despite its potentially higher used price. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and preferences. Consider a thorough inspection and test drive of each vehicle before making a decision.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families needing maximum passenger and cargo space, as well as those who frequently tow trailers or boats. It's worth buying used if you can find a well-maintained example with a documented service history. Look for models that have addressed common issues like oil consumption and transmission problems. The LT trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid examples with excessive rust or signs of neglect. Thoroughly inspect the vehicle before purchasing to ensure it meets your needs and expectations. Be prepared for higher running costs compared to smaller vehicles.

Has been a joy to drive for 9 years.

We bought this truck in 2012 when our four kids were 13, 11, 8, and 6. At the time I had been driving a Grand Caravan for nine years and we just needed more space. I have thoroughly enjoyed driving our Suburban LT. The seats are very comfortable and it was very easy to drive. The only problems we have had are with the transmission (had to replace after 5 yrs) and the front door pulls (plastic broke within a few years). I'm now looking to downsize as we only have two kids left at home, and I will miss this vehicle.

Reliable and Comfortable SUV

Our suburban provides room for our family of six with plenty of storage behind the third row seating. We love the heated leather seats in the front and middle rows, the power lift gate, and the power folding middle seats. It's off-road capabilities suit our desires for driving on the beach and going on mountain roads. We especially enjoy the DVD entertainment system with third-row screen and the built in hard drive for storing music.

Feel very safe and protected in my 2500 Suburban.

Love it, so far. 6 liter Vortec is a monster going down the road. Good sight lines and more storage/cargo room than I'll ever need.

The worst Chevy Suburban I've ever owned

I've owned Suburbans for the last 20 years and have loved them. Being a larger military family, having to transfer duty stations and move everything usually by ourselves has been less a stress having the Suburban. I purchased our 2012 Suburban Feb 2016 with a little over 80K miles. I was excited to have the new body, new interior design, the factory flip down dvd screens, of the LT package. Within the first year I had to replace the transmission $4,000. next the Rack & pinion $1,000, air bag lights $500, rusting undercarriage, the tires are constantly having to be refilled and myriad of other dash light issues stating low pressure. This has been a nightmare! I would have been an ambassador for Chevy Suburbans until now. I should have kept my 2003 Suburban and put in a new tranny. Truly disheartened over this.
