Rating: 4.85
Based on 44 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, part of a long-running series known for its spaciousness and capability. It continues the tradition of offering truck-based ruggedness with a roomy interior. Key trims include LS, LT, and Premier. The 2018 model is part of the eleventh generation, spanning from 2015-2020. New pricing for the 2018 Suburban ranged from approximately $50,000 to $70,000, depending on the trim and options. Its popularity stems from its ability to comfortably accommodate large families and their cargo, offering ample seating and impressive towing capacity.

The Good

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban offers a blend of practicality and appeal. Its strong V8 engine provides confident performance for towing and hauling, satisfying practical needs. Comfortable seating and a smooth ride appeal to those seeking a relaxed family vehicle. While not the most efficient, it offers considerable value in terms of space and capability, and its classic SUV design resonates with many buyers emotionally.

The Bad

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, while capable, has some weaknesses. Fuel economy is a common concern, especially in city driving. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and transmission. The third-row seating, while present, can be cramped for adults, and the cargo area with all seats in use is limited compared to its overall size. Watch out for potential oil consumption issues in higher mileage examples.

What Problems Does the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban has experienced some frequently reported problems. A common concern involves the transmission, with some owners reporting rough shifting or hesitation. Issues with the infotainment system, including freezing or glitches, have also been noted. Oil consumption, particularly in the 5.3L V8 engine, is another area of concern for some owners, potentially leading to the need for more frequent oil changes.

Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date information, as recalls can occur at any time. Common recall items on similar year models have involved issues with airbags and seatbelts.

Long-term reliability can be a concern for vehicles of this size and complexity. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial to mitigating potential problems. Owners should be aware of the possibility of costly repairs related to the transmission, suspension, and electrical systems as the vehicle ages. Some owners have reported issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can lead to engine problems over time. Addressing these potential issues proactively can help extend the lifespan of the vehicle.

How long will the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of service. Longevity largely depends on consistent upkeep and driving conditions. Key areas impacting durability include the transmission, which can be prone to issues with high mileage, and the suspension system, especially if used frequently for towing or off-road driving. Regular oil changes and attention to cooling system maintenance are crucial for the engine's long-term health. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban offers a comprehensive suite of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims add navigation and a premium Bose audio system. Entertainment features include available rear-seat entertainment systems with Blu-ray players.

Driver-assistance features vary by trim. Standard features often include a rearview camera and parking sensors. Higher trims offer lane keep assist, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. Magnetic Ride Control, available on the Premier trim, enhances ride comfort and handling.

Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control. Optional features include adaptive cruise control. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for a comprehensive safety assessment. Typically, the Suburban performs well in crash tests, offering good protection to occupants.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban had a new price range of approximately $50,000 to $70,000, depending on trim and options. As of late 2024, used market prices generally range from $30,000 to $50,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation is moderate for a vehicle of this type, holding value relatively well due to its demand for family hauling and towing. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options like leather seats and advanced safety features. Higher trims, like the Premier, tend to retain more value.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban is generally costly to own. Insurance rates tend to be higher due to its size and value. Fuel costs are significant due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance costs can be moderate with regular servicing, but repairs, especially related to the transmission or suspension, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs, including depreciation, fuel, insurance, and maintenance, make it a less economical choice compared to smaller SUVs or minivans.

2018 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban competes with vehicles like the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and GMC Yukon XL. In terms of performance, the Suburban's V8 engines offer comparable power and towing capacity to its rivals. Feature-wise, it provides a similar array of tech and safety options, though some competitors may offer more advanced driver-assistance systems. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Toyota Sequoia generally has a better reputation for long-term reliability, while the Suburban's reliability is considered average for its class.

Price-wise, the Suburban is typically in line with its competitors. The Ford Expedition offers similar capabilities and features, with comparable pricing. The GMC Yukon XL, being a closely related model, provides a similar experience with slightly different styling and features.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Sequoia for superior reliability, or the Ford Expedition for a comparable American SUV experience. For those needing less space, a minivan like the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna might offer better fuel economy and comparable passenger capacity, sacrificing towing capability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families needing ample passenger and cargo space, along with significant towing capacity. It's a worthy purchase if those needs outweigh concerns about fuel economy and potential maintenance costs. A used model represents better value, but thoroughly inspect it for signs of transmission issues or excessive oil consumption. The LT trim offers a good balance of features and price, while the Premier trim provides luxury amenities. If reliability is a top priority, consider alternatives like the Toyota Sequoia.

Fantastic and Smooth Suburban Premier

I have owned this 2018 for over a year. Purchased pre-owned with 11,000 miles on it GM Certified Pre-Owned. I owned a fully loaded 2007 Cadillac Escalade ESV I bought brand new, that I traded in, and the Chevrolet Suburban Premier is so much nicer. It has so many more options, is so much quieter and rides so smoothly. It is easier to drive than the Escalade ESV was and feels more solid and stable on the road. Fuel economy is awesome, I average over 18.5 MPG combined rural and city driving. I am so glad I elected to trade in the 2007 Escalade ESV on this Suburban. Planning on keeping it for a long time, is such a pleasure to drive!

Spacious, comfortable, and rugged.

This SUV was perfect for our family. We have 4 children. It is comfortable to drive and ride in and has excellent pick up on the highway and when passing and going uphill. It has the best acceleration out of any Suburban we've owned. This is our 4th Suburban. We love it but need to reduce expenses so we need to sell.

Best Customer Service!

I am writing this review to express my genuine gratitude to John Shawn and his team, besides eager that this review will be useful for potential consumers. I have been a customer for over 12 years owning/leasing more than six Acura vehicles. I have seen numerous changes at this location, including the level of customer service. Through the years it only gets better and better even when you say “how could it possibly get any better” it does. John always seems to go above and beyond my expectations. John and Bart are both genuine good people that take great pride at what they do. They work towards creating and keeping great customer experiences. Now a days it is rare to find people like John and his level of service. Acura should be thrilled to have them on their team. Quick story (truth) I recently purchased a preowned certified vehicle from Acura that happened to be a Chevy Suburban. I recently took the truck to the Chevy dealership for service. This was my first and last time bringing to another dealership. The level of customer service I received was unacceptable from service support up through management. Just one troubled visit reminded me why I continued to stay loyal to Acura and the team. Needless to say my Chevy now ONLY gets serviced with John Shaw and Bart Bartley. A BIG THANK YOU guys for all that you do to keep me a raving fan…Also a BIG THANK YOU to Sophie Morris in the sales department, I have purchased each vehicle through her and wouldn’t want it any other way.
