2019 Chevrolet Suburban Review: Reliable Large SUV With Average Ownership Costs As It Ages

Rating: 4.52
Based on 43 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, building upon a long lineage of Suburban models known for their spaciousness and capability. This model year falls within the twelfth generation (2015-2020). Key trims include LS, LT, and Premier. Pricing ranged from approximately $50,000 to over $70,000 when new. The Suburban stands out due to its massive cargo capacity, seating for up to nine, and robust towing capabilities, making it a popular choice for large families and those needing to haul heavy loads.
The Good

The 2019 Suburban offers powerful V8 engine options for confident towing (practical). The comfortable ride and spacious interior appeal to families seeking long-distance travel comfort (emotional). While not exceptionally fuel-efficient, its reliability and strong resale value contribute to its overall value proposition (practical). The classic SUV design projects a sense of capability and presence (emotional).

The Bad

The 2019 Suburban's size can be a drawback in urban environments, making parking and maneuvering challenging. Fuel economy is relatively low, especially with the larger engine. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electronic components. The third-row seat, while functional, isn't as comfortable as the front rows for adults.

What Problems Does the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

While generally reliable, the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban has exhibited some commonly reported issues. Some owners have reported problems with the infotainment system, including glitches, freezing, and connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or delayed engagement, have also been noted by some owners, though not widespread.
There have been recalls for the 2019 Suburban, including potential issues with the brake system and seat belt functionality. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing.
Long-term reliability concerns include potential oil consumption in the 5.3L V8 engine, a common issue in GM trucks and SUVs from this era. Also, the Magnetic Ride Control suspension (Premier trim) can be expensive to repair or replace as it ages. Premature wear of brake components is also a potential issue due to the vehicle's weight.

How long will the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely fluid flushes, and proactive maintenance are crucial for longevity. Weaknesses over time include potential rust in colder climates, wear and tear on suspension components, and potential electronic issues. The 5.3L V8's Active Fuel Management (AFM) system can sometimes lead to lifter failure at higher mileage if not properly maintained.

It's a very comfortable vehicle for our family, and we take road trips that quickly show a vehicles strengths and weaknesses. This is our fourth Suburban, so clearly, we are fans. The capacity, comfort, and utility of this Suburban makes it an excellent choice for our family of 5.

I love my Suburban 2019 Premium. It’s so smooth and rides well. The turn radius is crazy good for a truck. The features with the premium are awesome. Well worth the extra money! Gas mileage is great on Highway and average in the city for a 5.7L truck. I only have 60K miles so far, but I take good care of my stuff. My last Suburban 2005 got me 363K miles.
Little Joe
Traded my 2001 suburban in after 20yrs. Had over 200,000 miles and was still in very good condition. No serious problems. Have owned many cars, suv's and pickups in my 60 plus yrs. of driving. The 2001 was easily the best overall. Traded for 2019 suburban LT 4x4. Have it about a yr. and took some getting used to. Both equipped about the same. The 2019 gets better mpg, handles a bit better, has more accessories (many of wich I will never use) absolutely do not care for the cargo area (fold down seats etc.) Live in Ks. and have family in Seattle, Wa.,Baltimore, Twin City, and Texas areas. Don't use third row seating much so the cargo area in the 2001 suited our ease of loading and more space. Occasional use around town but use mainly for long road travel. I think the 2001 had better comfort in the drivers seat,( better lumbar support ) At this point I prefer the 2001, let you know more if the 2019 makes around 200,000 miles or 20yrs.
Negative Owner Reviews
2019 Premier

Driver-assistance features include:

2019 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban ranged from approximately $50,000 for the base LS trim to over $70,000 for a fully equipped Premier model. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $35,000 to $50,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Suburban holds its value relatively well due to its reputation for durability and high demand for large SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and geographic location. Lower mileage and a clean title command higher prices.

2019 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its size and value. Fuel costs are significant due to its low fuel economy. Maintenance, while not excessively frequent, can be expensive, especially for components like brakes and suspension. Repairs, particularly for the infotainment system or advanced features, can also be costly. Long-term ownership costs are substantial compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

2019 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban competes with other full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon XL, and Nissan Armada.
Performance: The Suburban's V8 engines offer comparable power to the Expedition and Yukon XL. The Armada's engine is also strong, but its handling is less refined.
Features: The Suburban's features are generally in line with its competitors. The Expedition offers more advanced tech in some areas.
Reliability: The Suburban has a decent reliability record, similar to the Yukon XL. The Expedition has had some reported issues. The Armada is generally considered reliable.
Price: The Suburban's price is generally competitive within its class.
Alternatives:
  • Ford Expedition Max: Offers a more modern interior and independent rear suspension for better ride quality.
  • GMC Yukon XL: Essentially a more upscale version of the Suburban.
  • Nissan Armada: Offers a lower price point, but lacks some of the refinement and cargo space of the Suburban.
For those prioritizing fuel economy, none of these are great. If a smoother ride is a must-have, the Expedition Max might be preferable. If budget is a primary concern, the Armada is worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families needing substantial passenger and cargo space, and those who frequently tow. It's worth buying used if you can find a well-maintained model with a clean service history and no outstanding recalls. Consider the LT or Premier trims for added features and comfort, but be mindful of potential maintenance costs on the Premier's Magnetic Ride Control. Inspect for common issues like infotainment glitches and transmission smoothness. If fuel economy and city maneuverability are top priorities, consider smaller SUV options. For those with heavy-duty needs, the Suburban remains a capable and practical choice.

Having doubts

Bought this used with 70,000 miles. Have had a little over one yr. Not really happy so far. Previous post was complimenting my 2001 suburban which I was extremely satified with. This 2019 is causing me doubts. After several long trips I can tell you that the finish (paint) is inferior. Have added mud flaps front and rear, and still dings from road (have never been off pavement) are showing up. My 2001 that I traded in looked better after 20yrs of driving. Also the chrome on the grill is already showing sign of failure. Not happy with the sideview mirrors when driving in heavy city traffic. The carpet in the vehicle lacks quality. Also the 2001 had the cargo (barn) doors, not the lift gate. For my use, those barn doors were the best. The lift gate is a B--CH TO CLEAN. I will drive it another year or so, but will be looking to trade for something else, maybe a Dodge Durango. Have had some good service from Dodge vehicles in the past, still driving a 2001 Dakota. Overall this 2019 is suitable, but after having the 2001 for twenty yrs. I am dissapointed in the overall quality of this vehicle for 20yrs of improvement and cost. Stay tuned.

2019 SUBURBAN - EXPENSIVE AND UNRELIABLE-BE AWARE

Purchased 2019 Suburban LT 4x4 exactly 3 years ago. Shortly before end of first year, battery went dead and left us stranded in the heat of Florida summer weather. During second year a strange and loud noise in the front breaks required quite a few visits to dealership with some parts replacement that wasn't covered by warranty. Finally last week, just a few months after the 3 year anniversary, starter motor died and we were left stranded once again. This last repair costed another $730. I am already in the market waiting for OTHER BRANDS inventory to improve and I will get rid of the Suburban. I regret the purchase of such an expensive and unreliable vehicle

Great for a big family, rides nice, safe.

Handles well for a large vehicle, nice smooth ride. Perfect for a large, active family. Safe - because it's big/heavy, and has good safety features engineered into it. Wish it had auto-dim headlights feature as standard. Good on gas mileage for its size/weight.
