The Good
The 2020 GMC Canyon offers a balanced package. Practically, it boasts strong towing capacity and a comfortable ride. Emotionally, the Denali trim provides a luxurious experience. Its smaller size enhances maneuverability. While not class-leading in fuel economy, it's acceptable. Reliability is generally good, and the design is both rugged and refined. The variety of engines ensures good performance.
The Bad
The 2020 GMC Canyon's weaknesses include a somewhat dated interior design in lower trims, average fuel economy with the V6 engine, and a relatively small rear seat in the extended cab configuration. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system. The base model lacks desirable features. Check for transmission issues during test drives.

What Problems Does the 2020 GMC Canyon Have?
While the 2020 model year itself has had a relatively small number of recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information based on the vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the electronic components and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Some earlier model years of the second-generation Canyon (2015-2017) had more significant issues related to the transmission and electrical systems, so it's wise to review the vehicle's history and perform a thorough inspection before purchasing a used model. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can help mitigate potential long-term reliability concerns. The diesel engine, while offering good towing capacity, can also present higher maintenance costs due to its more complex system.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to newer vehicles. Available options include:
- Rear parking sensors
- Rearview camera
- Forward collision alert
- Lane departure warning
These features are often bundled into option packages on higher trim levels.
Safety features include standard stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary, but the Canyon generally receives good, though not top-tier, scores. It's crucial to check the specific ratings for the 2020 model year on their respective websites for detailed information. Optional features that enhance safety include a driver alert package, which can provide audible and visual warnings to help prevent accidents. The limited availability of advanced driver-assistance systems is a key area where the Canyon lags behind some of its competitors.

How Does the 2020 GMC Canyon Compare to Other Pickup Truck?
In terms of performance, the Ranger's turbo engine offers better acceleration, while the Canyon's diesel provides superior towing. Feature-wise, the Canyon offers a compelling blend, especially in the Denali trim. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Tacoma typically ranks higher, while the Canyon and Colorado are generally average. Price-wise, the Canyon sits in the middle of the pack.
Alternatives depend on priorities. For off-road enthusiasts, the Tacoma TRD Pro is a better choice. For those prioritizing power and modern features, the Ranger is worth considering. If a luxurious interior is paramount, the Canyon Denali is a strong contender. For value-conscious buyers, the Chevrolet Colorado is a similar, slightly more affordable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 GMC Canyon a Good Pickup Truck?
A used 2020 Canyon can be a good value if properly maintained. Inspect thoroughly for any signs of transmission or infotainment issues. The SLT or Denali trims offer the best balance of features and value. Buying new might only be justified if advanced driver-assistance features are a must-have, as newer models offer significant upgrades in that area.

Think twiceI need a new starter and flex plate after just 22,000 miles. My 3 year warrant did not cover this and it's not covered on the power train warranty. I'm already putting almost $4,000 into a car that's just a little over 3 years old.

My 2020 GMC CanyonBought this truck for my new work truck. Smaller than my old Silverado but looks like it will be just fine. Gets really good gas mileage with the I4 motor.

Great truck!Very good truck, as you would expect from GMC. Have had it for a little while now, and have had no issues or complaints. Gas mileage is great, especially for a truck with over 300 hp. Comfortable, quiet ride. Love the features and styling the Denali offers. Would definitely recommend it.

Very nice truckVery nice vehicle for my wife and I in our mid seventies it replaced our Buick Enclave which very good. It’s ride is on the firm side - performance is very good - fit and finish very good - over all it’s a very good vehicle that we plan on purchasing with a new one in 2023 with another one because we like it’s size very easy to park and with its bed cover we can carry most anything we like. Thanks

Nice midsized pickupThis midsized pickup is perfect for someone who wants to use it for commuting and side projects. I'm very disappointed that it does not have built in Navigation. That seems like small money to include that.

Love my GMC Canyon!Great fit and finish, comfort and performance. Absolutely nothing negative about this vehicle. Driving in town, on county roads and on intestate highways are all very enjoyable.

Excellent truck, solid valueI decided to get a midsize rather than a full size pick up. I traded in a F250 super duty for the Canyon and am quite pleased with the purchase. The powerstroke from Ford was a disaster and they didn't stand behind it at all, I threw over 14 grand at that motor to keep it running over the seven years I owned it. I've been a Ford man my whole life and this is my first GMC. What a truck...the blue oval can suck it. I live in the Sierra and the Canyon, even in stock configuration has done really well off road though I will be upgrading the suspension as I plan on driving to even more remote locations. The automatic rear locker works great and the ability to put the transmission in low gear and select the gear I want with the touch of a button is really handy on the trail. The front air dam has got to go, as it reduces approach angle to just 17 degrees. The way the rear seat folds down to stow gear is awesome and meets all of my needs for day tripping in the high country. You would be amazed the places I have taken this rig in stock configuration. About the only complaint I have so far is who the xxxx designed the cup holders?

Pick-up ChickPerformance and convenience of a sturdy pick-up meets quality and style I’m looking for. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase. I love a lot of room and this is perfect for me.
