Rating: 4.61

Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2015 GMC Canyon marked the return of GMC to the mid-size truck segment. Available as an extended cab or crew cab with a 5-foot or 6-foot bed, it offered a more manageable size than full-size pickups. Key trims included SL, base Canyon, SLE, and SLT. New prices ranged from around $21,000 to $40,000. Its blend of truck capability and car-like refinement made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2015 GMC Canyon offers a compelling mix of truck utility and daily driver comfort. Its smaller size makes it easier to maneuver than a full-size truck, while still providing ample towing capacity. Fuel efficiency is also a strong point. The Canyon's refined interior and exterior styling add an emotional appeal for buyers who value aesthetics.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with the 2015 GMC Canyon's transmission, particularly with rough shifting. The infotainment system can be slow or buggy. Rust can be a problem in areas with road salt. Some reviewers noted the interior materials weren't as high-quality as expected for the price point.

What Problems Does the 2015 GMC Canyon Have?

Several issues have been reported with the 2015 GMC Canyon. The most prevalent concern revolves around the 8-speed automatic transmission (specifically the GM 8L45 and 8L90 models), which can exhibit rough shifting, hesitation, and shuddering. This issue has been subject to multiple Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) from GM, but a definitive fix remains elusive for some owners. Another common complaint involves the infotainment system, which some users find slow to respond, buggy, or prone to freezing. There have also been reports of premature paint chipping and rust, particularly in areas with harsh winter conditions. Some owners have experienced issues with the climate control system, including inconsistent temperature regulation.

While the 2015 model year itself hasn't been subject to a large number of recalls compared to some other vehicles, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls that may affect a specific vehicle. Long-term reliability is a mixed bag. While some owners report trouble-free experiences, the transmission issues, in particular, are a significant concern that could lead to costly repairs down the line. Addressing any potential issues promptly through regular maintenance and addressing TSBs can mitigate these concerns.

How long will the 2015 GMC Canyon last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 GMC Canyon can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Years of service depend heavily on driving habits and upkeep, but 10-15 years is achievable. Long-term durability hinges on addressing known weaknesses. The transmission is a primary concern; regular fluid changes and prompt attention to any shifting anomalies are critical. Rust prevention is also essential, particularly in regions with salt exposure. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

It has good power and pretty comfortable ride for a midsize truck. Handles well on the road and a great get-around-town vehicle. So much easier to park than my full size truck.
Negative Owner Reviews
2015 Canyon Owner
I picked up my 2015 All Terrain 4WD Canyon Ext Cab (2.5L) in July, 2015 and now have about 4200 miles on it. The Good: Seems to be pretty solidly put together - no rattles, creaks, or other noises yet. Fairly quiet on road, MPG averaging just over 21 so far. Interior is comfortable. Step in rear bumper corner is genius. The Bad: GM was so close on the design, but small things they could have done to make it better didn't happen. Door pockets are narrow and door cupholders are useless - who angles a cupholder base at 30 degrees? Leather and textile seats would have been better with all leather. Fake carbon fiber trim and imperceptibly asymmetrical rubber cupholder insert near shifter is just wrong. 6 speed auto downshifts to 5th gear on highway for no obvious reason. Front air dam limits clearance severely for an "All Terrain" vehicle. Many recalls so far...5 or more. Dashboard fitment gaps starting to open up.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 GMC Canyon's tech features vary based on the trim level. Base models include a basic AM/FM radio with a small display. Higher trims (SLE and SLT) offer the GMC IntelliLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not available in 2015 but could be retrofitted through some aftermarket options), Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports. Navigation was an available option. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but available options included a rearview camera and lane departure warning.
Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control. Optional safety features included forward collision alert.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good, but it is crucial to check the specific ratings for the cab configuration (extended cab or crew cab) as results can differ. The crew cab earned good ratings in most IIHS tests. Always verify the ratings from these organizations for complete safety information.

2015 GMC Canyon Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 GMC Canyon ranged from approximately $21,000 for a base model to around $40,000 for a fully-equipped SLT. Current used market prices vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and trim level, but typically range from $12,000 to $25,000. Depreciation has been moderate, but factors like the transmission issues and rust concerns can negatively impact resale value. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage and desirable features (like the V6 engine and 4WD) command higher prices.

2015 GMC Canyon Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2015 GMC Canyon are generally moderate, similar to other mid-size trucks. Fuel costs are average for the segment. Maintenance costs are typical, but potential transmission repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership expenses. Repair costs can be higher than some competitors due to the more complex transmission. Overall, ownership can be relatively economical if major repairs are avoided, but the potential for costly transmission issues makes it less predictable.

2015 GMC Canyon Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 GMC Canyon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 GMC Canyon Compare to Other Truck?

The 2015 GMC Canyon competes with the Chevrolet Colorado (its mechanical twin), Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier. In terms of performance, the Canyon's V6 engine offers competitive power, although the Tacoma's off-road capabilities are superior. Feature-wise, the Canyon offers a more refined interior than the Frontier, but its infotainment system lags behind newer rivals. Reliability is a concern; the Tacoma generally scores higher in reliability ratings. Price-wise, the Canyon is typically positioned between the Tacoma and Frontier.

The Chevrolet Colorado is a very similar alternative, offering nearly identical performance and features at a potentially lower price. The Toyota Tacoma is a strong alternative for buyers prioritizing reliability and off-road prowess, albeit with a less comfortable interior. The Nissan Frontier is the most budget-friendly option, but it lacks the refinement and features of the other trucks. Whether a better alternative exists depends on individual priorities – reliability favors the Tacoma, budget favors the Frontier, and a balance of features and price favors the Colorado.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 GMC Canyon a Good Truck?

The 2015 GMC Canyon is ideal for buyers who need a truck's utility in a more manageable size than a full-size pickup and value a more refined interior. It's worth buying used if you can find a well-maintained example with documented service history and preferably one that has had the transmission issues addressed or mitigated. A lower mileage V6 model is preferable. Thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic before purchase is crucial to assess potential issues, especially regarding the transmission. Consider the Colorado instead for similar features at a potentially lower cost, or the Tacoma if reliability is paramount.

Solid Family Truck

I purchased this vehicle to haul family stuff around on trips (mainly camping) and it fits the bill perfectly. It's not meant for heavy hauls or big projects. Love it so far!

Worked with Tony to purchase aTRUCK . He didn’t pressure us when we wanted to “sleep on it” over the weekend and was very helpful when we decided to move forward, making the process very easy and painless.
