The 2023 GMC Canyon marks the start of a new generation for GMC's mid-size truck. Available as a crew cab pickup with a short bed, it offers increased off-road capability and a more premium experience compared to its predecessor. Key trims include Elevation, AT4, Denali, and AT4X. Expect a pricing range starting around $40,000 and reaching upwards of $55,000+ for the top-tier trims. Its bold design, advanced technology, and off-road focus make it stand out in the competitive mid-size truck market.
The Good

The 2023 Canyon boasts strong performance from its turbocharged engine, delivering ample power and a rugged feel. It provides enhanced off-road capability, appealing to adventurous buyers. The redesigned interior offers increased comfort and modern styling. It's a capable and stylish truck that balances practicality with a premium experience, making it desirable for both work and play.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include a higher price point compared to some competitors. Fuel economy, while reasonable, isn't class-leading. Some may find the ride quality, geared towards off-road use, less comfortable on paved roads. Also, being a newly redesigned model year, potential early production issues should be considered.

What Problems Does the 2023 GMC Canyon Have?

As the 2023 GMC Canyon is a newly redesigned model, long-term reliability data is still emerging. It's critical to monitor owner forums and official sources for updates.
Frequently reported problems may initially include issues common to new vehicle launches, such as software glitches with the infotainment system, sensor malfunctions related to advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and minor build quality imperfections. Some early reports might involve the new turbocharged engine and transmission integration, though these would need further validation over time.
Recalls are tracked by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and should be monitored regularly.
Long-term reliability concerns will depend on the quality of components and the effectiveness of the redesign. Monitoring for issues like premature wear of suspension components, problems with the four-wheel-drive system (if equipped), and the longevity of the engine and transmission should be part of responsible ownership. As more data becomes available, reliability ratings from sources like Consumer Reports can provide further insight. Given this is a new generation, it's prudent to stay informed about potential issues reported by owners.

How long will the 2023 GMC Canyon last?

Estimating average mileage or years of service for the 2023 Canyon is difficult due to its recent redesign. However, with proper maintenance and responsible driving habits, owners can reasonably expect 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service.
Long-term durability will depend on factors like climate, usage (e.g., frequent off-roading), and adherence to recommended maintenance schedules. Potential weaknesses could emerge in areas like suspension components, especially with frequent off-road use, and the long-term reliability of the turbocharged engine, which is a more complex system than naturally aspirated engines. Regular servicing, including oil changes and fluid checks, will be crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

I have owned my new 2023 GMC Canyon 4x4 for almost a month now. I love it. Drives and rides great. As a female I feel very safe in it. I traded in my 10 year old Jeep for it. I miss my Jeep but very happy with my new truck. I would recommend this truck if you do not need a big pick up.

Redesigned and a really great job. Didn't think that I would like the new engine, but with the new transmission everything is just really smooth. Lengthened the wheel base and the ride is quite nice. So far everything about this truck is topnotch and quality.

Love the look and size of the new Canyon, but have had nothing but problems with my new AT4. Heads up display didn’t work (wiring was not connected properly); air leak at windshield (sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard); engine overheated and had to be towed (coolant hose clamp was not properly installed); infotainment system still not working properly (waiting on backordered part for going on 2 months). Wish I had my Ford back!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 GMC Canyon features a modern tech suite. The standard infotainment system includes an 11.3-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and available Google built-in. Driver-assistance features are comprehensive, including standard automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and forward collision alert.
Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a surround-view camera system. Higher trims like the Denali and AT4X offer additional tech upgrades, such as a premium Bose sound system and head-up display.
Safety features also include multiple airbags, stability control, and traction control. As a newly designed model, crash-test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS may not be immediately available. Once available, these ratings will be crucial for assessing overall safety performance. It's expected that the Canyon will incorporate modern safety technologies to achieve good crash test scores.

2023 GMC Canyon Prices and Market Value

The 2023 GMC Canyon had a starting MSRP around $40,000 for the base Elevation trim, reaching upwards of $55,000+ for the Denali and AT4X trims. Used market prices will vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim level.
Depreciation is affected by factors like overall market demand for trucks, fuel prices, and the vehicle's condition. Trucks, in general, tend to hold their value relatively well, but higher trim levels with desirable features and lower mileage will command higher resale prices. Keeping the vehicle well-maintained and documenting service history are critical for preserving resale value.

2023 GMC Canyon Cost of Ownership

The 2023 GMC Canyon is likely to have average to slightly above-average ownership costs. Insurance rates will depend on the driver's history and location, but the Canyon's classification as a truck could result in higher premiums than smaller vehicles. Fuel costs will be dependent on driving habits and fuel prices.
Maintenance costs are expected to be typical for a modern truck, but potential repairs on the turbocharged engine or advanced technology could be more expensive. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, but the benefits of its capability and features should be weighed against the costs.

2023 GMC Canyon Insurance

Insurance for a 2023 GMC Canyon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 GMC Canyon Compare to Other Truck?

The 2023 GMC Canyon competes against rivals such as the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado (related), Ford Ranger, and Nissan Frontier.
Performance: The Canyon's turbocharged engine delivers competitive power and torque, potentially surpassing the Tacoma's base engine. The Ranger offers a similar turbocharged experience.
Features: The Canyon offers a modern infotainment system and a range of driver-assistance features that are competitive with the newer Ranger and Frontier. The Tacoma lags behind in some tech aspects.
Reliability: The Tacoma has a strong reputation for reliability, which the Canyon needs to prove over time. The Colorado, being mechanically similar, will likely share reliability trends.
Price: The Canyon is generally priced higher than the base models of some competitors like the Tacoma and Frontier. The Ranger's price point is similar.
Alternatives: If reliability is the top priority, the Toyota Tacoma is a solid choice. The Ford Ranger offers similar performance and tech. The Chevrolet Colorado is a closely related alternative, often at a slightly lower price point. The Nissan Frontier presents a value-oriented option.
If you prioritize a modern interior, strong engine performance, and off-road capability, the Canyon is a compelling choice; however, be mindful of the potential higher cost.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 GMC Canyon a Good Truck?

The 2023 GMC Canyon is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and capable mid-size truck with a modern interior and strong performance. It's worth buying if you appreciate its advanced technology, off-road capabilities (especially in the AT4 and AT4X trims), and premium features.
Consider buying new to take advantage of warranty coverage and the latest features. Used models might offer a better value proposition once depreciation occurs, but thoroughly inspect the vehicle's history and condition. The AT4 trim balances off-road capability with everyday usability, while the Denali provides a luxurious experience. Evaluate your needs and budget to determine the best trim level for you.

I was excited to get a Denali version and ordered it

I was excited to get a Denali version and ordered it before it was out. That was a mistake as there are many problems with this truck. Number one problem is that it is really cheaply made. Crappy 4 cyclinder engine, crazy cheap interior, rough ride, poor quality, no storage space, MANUAL rear window! There is no difference other than a few cosmetic items with the Denali…. It is a total ripoff. Denali means luxury? Not here. No Homelink, no parking sensors, no hood supports, dirt cheap plastic everywhere. Buggy software as well. I ended up hating this truck and dumped it after a year. If you want a great truck for $55k buy a slightly used Ram.

Missing a few things that could really make it better.

Missing a few things that could really make it better. Homelink for garage door isn’t offered? Doesn’t come with a receiver type hitch however what does comes with it is almost the same amount of steel. The phone charger doesn’t work quite right and they know it.

If you like small trucks that feel like a pop can

way to small inside for me like driving a POP CAN I would not recommend for tall people. I will not buy again 2.4 cylinder turbo is ok.

Great Truck but needs some additional items.

I have only 550 miles on it so far. I enjoy it a lot. I have the Denali and I think GM should have added the following equipment to it. 1. Garage Door opener. 2. The ability to switch to a camera view for the inside rear view mirror. 3. On the driver and passenger side doors have soft touch on the upper part of the inside door panel so when you rest your arm on the panel it is more comfortable. 4. Add about 4 inches to the back seat space by making the truck 4 inches longer.
