The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV, part of the 10th generation (2007-2014). Known for its spacious interior and robust towing capacity, it's a popular choice for large families or those needing to haul significant loads. Key trims include the LS, LT, and LTZ. New pricing ranged from approximately $40,000 to $50,000+ depending on trim and options. The Suburban's immense size and ability to comfortably transport up to nine passengers set it apart.
The Good

The 2009 Suburban offers a comfortable ride and powerful engine options, appealing to practical buyers needing space and towing capacity. Its classic SUV design and sense of security resonate emotionally. While not the most fuel-efficient, its proven reliability and overall value make it a compelling choice for large families or those needing a workhorse.

The Bad

The 2009 Suburban suffers from lower fuel economy compared to smaller SUVs. Common issues include potential transmission problems, oil consumption, and electrical glitches. Rust can also be a concern, especially in colder climates. Prospective buyers should inspect the vehicle thoroughly for these issues before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. One notable issue is excessive oil consumption, particularly in the 5.3L V8 engine. This can lead to engine damage if not monitored closely. Transmission problems, including hard shifting and slipping, have also been reported. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the entertainment system, are another area of concern.

Recalls for the 2009 Suburban have included issues related to the fuel system and airbags. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for rust, especially in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage.

Specific issues might vary slightly by model year within the 2007-2014 generation, but the 2009 model generally shares similar concerns. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is essential to mitigate these risks and extend the vehicle's lifespan. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify any existing or potential problems.

How long will the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with consistent care. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, transmission service, or addressing minor issues promptly can significantly shorten its lifespan.

Long-term durability concerns include rust, especially in colder climates. The transmission, while generally robust, can be a weak point if not properly maintained. Electrical components can also become problematic over time. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance are key to maximizing the Suburban's years of service.

Negative Owner Reviews

With 4 children, we were looking for a huge SUV to give us lots of room for anything really. Then I found this 2009 Suburban LS. It was great at first but as time past, it started to reveal its cheap, plastic parts. The Good: strong engine, roomy The Bad: dashboard cracked at around 22k miles if I remember correctly, interior door handle plastic "chrome" covering started to peel and cut our hands on several occasions, center console lid broke at around 5000 miles, pockets on back of drivers and front passenger seats broke around 8000 miles, the long door bumper strip outside started to peel around 10000 miles which looked embarrassing, AC actuator or something like that started to malfunction around 26000 miles. The tailgate suddenly fell on me while grabbing groceries due to poor tailgate struts. Had that replaced twice in 12 months. Shame on GM.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and multiple airbags. Higher trims like the LT and LTZ offered more advanced features.

Tech & Entertainment:
  • Base models featured a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player.
  • Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems, including Bose premium sound.
  • Optional features included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, navigation system, and satellite radio.

Driver-Assistance:
  • Rear parking sensors were available as an option.
  • Some models included remote start.

Safety Features:
  • Standard ABS and stability control.
  • Multiple airbags, including side-impact airbags in higher trims.
  • Tire pressure monitoring system.

Crash-Test Ratings:
The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban received generally good crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Ratings varied depending on the specific test (frontal, side, rollover). It's recommended to consult the NHTSA website for detailed crash-test information. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also provided crash test data. Due to its size and construction, the Suburban offered good occupant protection in many crash scenarios.

2009 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban LS started around $40,000, with higher trims like the LTZ exceeding $50,000. Currently, used market prices range from approximately $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.

The Suburban has depreciated significantly over time, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (rust, mechanical issues), trim level, and whether it's a 2WD or 4WD model. Models with lower mileage and in excellent condition command higher prices. 4WD models typically retain more value, especially in regions with snow or off-road driving needs.

2009 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban is not an economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are moderate to high due to its size and potential repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, leading to significant fuel expenses. Maintenance can be costly, especially if major repairs like transmission work are needed. Overall, long-term ownership costs are above average compared to smaller vehicles. Be prepared for higher than average expenses for fuel, insurance, and maintenance.

2009 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban competes with other full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada. Compared to the Ford Expedition, the Suburban often offers slightly better towing capacity and a more spacious third-row seat. The Toyota Sequoia is known for its reliability but can be more expensive to purchase used.

In terms of performance, the Suburban's engine options are comparable to its rivals. Features are generally similar across the class, with higher trims offering comparable luxury options. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Sequoia generally has a better reputation, while the Suburban has its own strengths and weaknesses. Price-wise, used Suburbans are often competitively priced within the full-size SUV market.

Alternatives to the Suburban include the GMC Yukon XL (essentially a rebadged Suburban) and the Cadillac Escalade ESV (a more luxurious option). If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Sequoia might be a better choice, but be prepared to pay a premium. For those needing maximum towing capacity and passenger space at a competitive price, the Suburban remains a solid option. However, if fuel economy is a major concern, consider a newer, smaller SUV or minivan.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Wagon?

The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families or those who frequently need to transport many passengers or tow heavy loads. It offers ample space and capability. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities.

If you need maximum space and towing capacity and are comfortable with the fuel economy and potential maintenance costs, a used 2009 Suburban can be a good value. However, a thorough inspection is crucial before purchasing to identify any potential issues. Opting for a higher trim like the LT or LTZ can add desirable features, but also increases the purchase price. Consider alternatives if fuel economy or reliability are primary concerns. It's not recommended to buy new due to its age.

This truck is amazing

This truck is great, it is worth the money that was paid for. It is a heavy duty truck with nice looks on the exterior. Maybe the interior can use a little more creativity to look more nice but over would recommend to anyone.

Suburbans & Grand Cherokees are the best

If you need a big truck this is as good as it gets. If you don't need a big truck get the Grand Cherokee. Don't bother with anything else. I've had over 40 vehicles in 26 years. These are the best.
