The Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV with a long and storied history, dating back to 1935. The 2022 model continues the tradition of a body-on-frame design, offering exceptional space and capability. Key trims include LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. Pricing ranges from approximately $53,000 to $80,000+ depending on trim and options. Its immense passenger and cargo capacity, combined with strong towing capability, makes it a popular choice for large families and those needing serious utility.
The Good

The 2022 Suburban boasts powerful engine options and comfortable ride, especially with the available Magnetic Ride Control. Its cavernous interior and sophisticated design appeal to those valuing space and style. Practically, it offers exceptional towing capacity and expected reliability (check for common issues!), making it a versatile and dependable choice for demanding needs.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 Suburban include its large size, making it challenging to maneuver in tight spaces. Fuel economy is predictably low. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, specifically software glitches. Check for proper functioning of all electronic features during inspection and research reported transmission issues.

What Problems Does the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban Have?

While the 2022 Suburban is generally considered reliable, some frequently reported problems include issues with the infotainment system, such as screen freezes and software glitches. Some owners have also reported problems with the transmission, including rough shifting or hesitation. Electrical issues, particularly related to the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), have also been noted, although less frequently.
Recalls can be checked on the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website using the VIN. It's crucial to verify recall status before purchasing a used model. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the electronic systems. Ensure all features, especially ADAS functions like lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control, are functioning correctly during inspection. Oil consumption in some of the V8 engines has also been discussed as a potential long-term issue, so monitor oil levels regularly. Before purchase, a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is strongly recommended to identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 Chevrolet Suburban can reasonably be expected to last for 200,000 miles or 15+ years. Consistent oil changes, timely fluid replacements (transmission, coolant, brakes), and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial. Long-term durability hinges on preventing rust, especially in regions with harsh winters. Weaknesses over time often relate to the suspension components, particularly air suspension if equipped, and wear and tear on interior materials, especially in high-use areas. Pay particular attention to the lifespan of the electronic components and the 10-speed transmission.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban offers a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer features like a Bose premium sound system, rear-seat entertainment system with dual 12.6-inch LCD touchscreens, and a head-up display.
Driver-assistance features include forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, rear park assist, and a rearview camera. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and HD Surround Vision. Super Cruise, GM's hands-free driving system, is also available on certain trims.
Safety features include multiple airbags, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, and trailer sway control. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) provide crash-test ratings, which should be checked for the specific model year. While specific ratings can vary, the Suburban generally performs well in crash tests due to its size and robust construction.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban had a starting MSRP of around $53,000, climbing to $80,000+ for the High Country trim with all the options. Current used market prices vary greatly based on mileage, condition, and trim, typically ranging from $45,000 to $70,000.
Depreciation is moderate for the Suburban, as large SUVs tend to hold their value well. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, service history, and whether it's a desirable trim level (like the Z71 or High Country). Keeping the vehicle well-maintained and having a clean title are essential for maximizing resale value.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its size and value. Fuel costs are substantial, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance, including oil changes and tire replacements, can be expensive. Repair costs can also be high, particularly for complex electronic systems. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for these factors. The diesel engine offers better fuel economy but comes with its own set of maintenance considerations. This is not an economical vehicle.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

Key rivals to the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban include the Ford Expedition Max, GMC Yukon XL, and Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer. The Suburban generally offers a similar blend of performance and features compared to the Expedition Max and Yukon XL, sharing the same GM platform. The Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer offers a more luxurious interior and different styling.
In terms of reliability, the Suburban and Expedition Max are typically comparable, though individual experiences may vary. The Yukon XL, being mechanically similar to the Suburban, shares similar reliability characteristics. The Jeep Wagoneer is a newer entrant, so long-term reliability data is still emerging. The price points are generally similar across these models, with the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer potentially commanding a higher premium.
Alternatives depend on priorities. If luxury is paramount, the Grand Wagoneer is a strong contender. If fuel economy is a key concern, the diesel Suburban or Expedition might be preferable. The Yukon XL offers a slightly different styling and feature set within the same GM platform. If a similar vehicle is desired, the GMC Yukon XL is a great alternative. Otherwise, the Suburban is a solid choice within its class.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is ideal for large families needing ample passenger and cargo space, or individuals who regularly tow heavy loads. It's worth buying if its capabilities align with your needs, but be prepared for higher running costs. A used model can offer significant savings, but prioritize a thorough inspection and review of the vehicle history report. Consider the LT or RST trims for a balance of features and value. The Z71 is great for light off-roading. If budget allows and luxury is desired, the High Country offers a premium experience. Ensure the infotainment system and other electronics function correctly before purchasing any used model. If your family requires the extra space, it's tough to beat the Suburban.

2022 Diesel Chevy Suburban LT 4x4

Ordered a 2022 Chevy Suburban LT 4x4 with the Diesel Engine. Absolutely love it. Great power/performance, and we're getting 20-30 MPG. Average for the first 3,200 miles has been over 27MPG. Drove from Michigan to Florida and back and the diesel eats up the mountains. On the flat part of Florida 2 lane highway we managed over 30mpg. Extremely comfortable, plenty of space, and nice safety features too. Great ride and handling. If you need a big vehicle the Suburban with the Diesel is your best option.
