The 2006 Honda S2000 is a legendary roadster that cemented Honda's reputation for high-revving performance. Produced from 1999 to 2009, it's exclusively a two-door convertible. While there were some minor variations over the years, the key trims were essentially the base model. New prices ranged from around $33,000. Its exceptionally high-revving engine, near-perfect balance, and engaging driving dynamics made it a standout sports car.
The Good

The 2006 S2000 excels in performance and reliability, appealing to both emotions and practicality. Its high-revving engine delivers thrilling acceleration. Honda's reputation ensures dependability and solid value. Its sleek design and open-top experience ignite passion, while decent fuel efficiency for a sports car and lasting build quality offer peace of mind.

The Bad

The 2006 S2000's weaknesses include a relatively stiff ride, limited cargo space, and potential for high oil consumption in some engines. Watch out for signs of deferred maintenance, especially regarding valve adjustments and clutch condition. Rust can also be an issue in areas with harsh winters. Suspension bushings can wear over time and need replacement.

What Problems Does the 2006 Honda S2000 Have?

The 2006 Honda S2000 is generally considered reliable, but some common issues arise with age and mileage. Valve adjustments are crucial, as the high-revving engine is sensitive to proper valve clearances. Neglecting this can lead to engine damage. Oil consumption can be a concern, particularly in earlier model years, though it can also affect the 2006 model. Regularly checking and topping off the oil level is essential. Clutch wear is another potential issue, as aggressive driving can shorten its lifespan. The differential can also develop leaks over time. Suspension bushings can wear out, leading to sloppy handling and requiring replacement. Some owners have reported issues with the soft top mechanism, though this is not a widespread problem. Rust, while not as prevalent as in some other cars, can be a concern, especially in areas where salt is used on roads during winter. It's important to inspect the undercarriage for any signs of corrosion. Recalls for the S2000 were relatively limited. Potential buyers should check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see if any recalls are outstanding. Overall, with proper maintenance, the 2006 S2000 can be a reliable car. However, neglecting maintenance or subjecting it to excessive abuse can lead to costly repairs.

How long will the 2006 Honda S2000 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Honda S2000 can easily last well over 200,000 miles or 15-20 years. Many owners report exceeding these figures. Regular oil changes, valve adjustments, and timely replacement of wear items are key to longevity. Long-term durability is generally excellent, but weaknesses can emerge over time. These include increased oil consumption, worn suspension components, and potential issues with the soft top mechanism. Rust can become a factor in certain climates. Proper storage during the off-season can extend the life of the soft top and prevent rust.

If you can put up with it's ridiculously small interior, this car is great--it runs well (I have over 300K miles on it now), even though repairs are a little costly when they are finally needed, and it gets on down the road REALLY well!

I have owned and driven many performance, luxury and sports cars in my days. Never could you find a car that incorporated all aspects of what cars can be until Honda made the S2000. To drive the S2000 will just blow you away. You come away saying wow, how can that be. You haven't driven til you have driven this. Of the S2000 stable, and I've driven them all, the 2006 model is the best in regards to balance of performance and luxury while retaining raw sports car qualities. The differences from the ten model years, 2000 to 2009, in some cases is subtle but the 06 has the best balance which makes it the best of the run.
I WANT IT ALL!
Probably the best car ever made. When I was considering "My Reward" I checked out a lot for cars. It came down to a practical decision. Yes, believe me, it was a practical decision to buy a car that many say is not practical. If your looking to haul a useful amount of lumber, drive in heavy traffic, drive in inclement weather and other such nonsense, though it can be done, you may not consider this car practical. You'd be charged with blasphemy by many for trying to do so anyway. What I considered in my decision. Number one the car was for me, not everyone else. Most people do not know what this car is when they see it, but, they do love it. I could have bought anything I wanted. I was considering a Jag, Vet, Camaro, Mustang, Mercedes, Beemer, Porsche, Ferrari amongst others. With all these choices why did I buy the S? Back to my first statement the car was for me, not anyone/everyone else. I bought this as a "Reward". I work hard for my money. I'm a practical, value orientated person. I'm very busy, loaded up with responsibilities. I wanted a toy, a serious toy. One that I could play with, play hard with and not end up under it, over it, wasting my valuable time fixing it. RELIABILITY, CHECK. It's a toy, it should be fun. Fast, quick, nimble, surefooted, all those things you may consider fun. While I'm here let's speak to fast. It is fast but if you want to do quarter mile stuff, race long straights, etc your likely gonna get beat. But in the twisties, the tight ones, all those other cars will get in your way. I had a Carrera in my way in some nice twisties. In the straights he'd run away but hit the curves and he was in my way. FUN, CHECK. GAS MILEAGE, CHECK. It's great. Comfort. I don't know why many here have marked it as only four of five? I'm 5'11'', about 200 lbs, no issues. Long drives your gonna wanna stretch but I do that in any car on a long drive... The wife loves it and she hates long drives... I've known guys 6'2'' and heavier guys too that drove and enjoyed the cars. COMFORT, CHECK. I've known people that daily drive their S2Ks. I've referred to the S as "The Civic From xxxx!" It's as reliable, no more reliable than a Civic. It has all the aforementioned attributes. So to me, PRACTICAL, CHECK. And how did I not mention it's a convertible! With air conditioning to boot for those hot muggy days. With all this considered it was a no brainer. Wish I had bought several as these are now an investment in addition to all their other qualities. How could you go wrong... The cars a 2006 that I bought new. Last fall, 2019, I replaced the OEM battery. The battery was still good but getting weak. No other problems or issues. Nothing.
Negative Owner Reviews

Having owned umpteen Sports Cars and after admiring the great looks and reading the rave reviews I bought an S2000. I can say I was extremely disappointed with the whole ownership experience. They are cramped inside, suffer extensively from corrosion issues and are tail happy to the point of being dangerous in the wet. Not for the inexperienced driver, the only thing I liked was the exterior styling.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Honda S2000 prioritized driving experience over advanced technology. Built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic. It came standard with an AM/FM stereo and CD player. There was no navigation system or advanced infotainment. Driver-assistance features were limited to cruise control. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), dual front airbags, and side airbags. There were no electronic stability control systems in this era of the S2000. Optional features were extremely limited, focusing more on dealer-installed accessories rather than factory options.

Crash test ratings for the S2000 are somewhat limited due to its low production volume. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) did not perform extensive crash testing on the S2000. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also has limited data. While it had standard safety equipment for its time, it lacks the advanced safety features found in modern vehicles. The S2000 relied on its agile handling and responsive braking to avoid accidents. The emphasis was on driver skill and awareness rather than electronic aids. The safety design philosophy focused on providing a rigid chassis and basic occupant protection in the event of a collision.

2006 Honda S2000 Prices and Market Value

The 2006 Honda S2000 had a starting MSRP of around $33,000 when new. Used market prices now vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and location. Expect to pay anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 or even higher for pristine examples. The S2000 has depreciated relatively little compared to many other cars. Its collectibility, strong performance reputation, and limited production contribute to its high resale value. Low mileage, excellent condition, original parts, and complete service records significantly boost resale value. Modifications generally decrease value unless they are high-quality and professionally installed.

2006 Honda S2000 Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2006 Honda S2000 can be moderately costly. Insurance can be higher than average due to its sports car classification. Fuel costs are reasonable if driven conservatively, but spirited driving will reduce fuel economy. Maintenance is crucial, especially valve adjustments, which can be expensive. Repairs can also be pricey, especially if major engine or transmission work is needed. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits and driving style. Neglecting maintenance will lead to increased repair costs and shorten the car's lifespan.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Honda S2000 Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2006 Honda S2000 competed with roadsters like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, BMW Z4, and Porsche Boxster. The S2000 offered superior horsepower compared to the Miata and Z4 (base model), but the Boxster provided even more power. In terms of handling, the S2000 was renowned for its sharp and precise steering. The Miata offered a more playful and forgiving experience, while the Z4 and Boxster provided a more refined and luxurious feel. The S2000's interior was more spartan than the BMW or Porsche. Reliability-wise, the S2000 is generally considered very reliable, comparable to the Miata and potentially more so than the early Z4 models. The Boxster can be more expensive to maintain. Pricewise, the S2000 was positioned between the Miata and the higher-end Z4 and Boxster. Alternatives depend on individual priorities. The Miata offers a similar roadster experience at a lower price point, emphasizing fun and affordability. The BMW Z4 provides more luxury and comfort. The Porsche Boxster delivers more performance and prestige but comes with higher ownership costs. Considering alternatives is about trading off performance and budget. A more modern MX-5 may deliver a similar driving experience with updated features. The Nissan 350z/370z offers great performance at similar pricing for more practical use with more space.

The 2006 Honda S2000 is an ideal car for driving enthusiasts who appreciate a pure, engaging, and high-revving sports car experience. It's worth buying if you prioritize performance, handling, and reliability over luxury and modern technology. It's a fantastic weekend car or a dedicated driver's car. It's best to buy a well-maintained used example with complete service records and no signs of abuse. Pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Avoid heavily modified examples unless you know exactly what you're getting into. Finding one that is stock or lightly modded is ideal. Understand that this is a sports car and not a daily-driver.

Best 2 Seat Roadster value ever.

Powerful, sleek. Excellent handling and balance. Legendary Honda reliability. The ultimate driver's car. No shortcomings, no compromises. Fast, fun, reliable. Best value, easily bests cars costing three times as much. Maintenance costs low.

A modern classic for sports car fans

The Honda S2000 has become a modern classic. It has timeless performance and style. This is arguably Honda's best production vehicle ever and best distills what Honda used to stand for. The Honda S2000 is an amazing, engaging, reliable sports car packaged around a gem of an engine. Can be daily driven as the clutch, shifter, and all controls in general operate with perfect, traditional Honda feel and ergonomics.

A sport car from Honda formula 1 racing

Loved my 2004 S2000 and was sorry that I sold it but had high miles. Bought a 2006 miata and was nice but didn't cut it in comparison. Sold it and bought my current 06 S2000 with only 19,000 miles and will never sell it. Incredible handling and great styling!

A collector

12 years old and only 40,000 miles, and I have had it for the past 6 years and 20,000 miles. The most solid vehicle and most straight forward handling with the best manual transmission. There's always a smile on my face when I have a chance to drive it!

One of the best JDM cars I've ever driven.

This S2000 was one of the most surprising driving experiences. I never would have thought I would enjoy driving it as much as I have. Since owning the car I now have an understanding why these are so popular for a budget sports car.

Great car

Great value, performs like a much more expensive sports car. The car gets a lot of head turns because it is so rare. If you can find one you should consider buying. It appears they are going up in value
