The Honda S2000, particularly the 2007 model, is a legendary roadster celebrated for its high-revving engine and engaging driving experience. A successor to the Honda S800, it debuted in 1999 as a 2000 model year and continued through 2009. It features a two-door, two-seat convertible body style. Key trims remained largely consistent, with subtle updates over the years. Original pricing hovered around $34,000, while used prices vary widely based on condition and mileage. Its phenomenal engine and near-perfect balance are major draws.
The Good

The 2007 S2000 boasts exhilarating performance from its high-revving engine and precise handling. Its legendary Honda reliability provides peace of mind. While not overly plush, the interior is functional and driver-focused. The design is timeless and appealing. Fuel economy is respectable for its class. For enthusiasts, it offers an unmatched driving experience, while practical buyers appreciate its dependability and potential for appreciation.

The Bad

The 2007 S2000 has some known weaknesses. The high-revving engine can be unforgiving if not properly maintained. The somewhat stiff ride may not suit everyone. Watch out for differential issues, especially in earlier models, and ensure regular oil changes are meticulously performed. The lack of modern infotainment features is also a consideration for some buyers. High mileage examples require careful inspection.

What Problems Does the 2007 Honda S2000 Have?

The 2007 Honda S2000 is generally reliable, but some issues are frequently reported. Differential failure, particularly with aggressive driving or lack of proper maintenance, is a concern. Oil consumption can be higher than average, so regular monitoring is crucial. Some owners report issues with the soft top, such as tears or leaks, especially on older models. Clutch wear can be accelerated with aggressive driving. While not a widespread problem, some early AP1 models (2000-2003) suffered from valve retainer issues. The 2007 model, being an AP2, is less prone to this particular issue. There have been recalls related to airbags (Takata), so checking if the vehicle has had these recalls performed is vital. Long-term reliability largely depends on maintenance. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring warning signs can lead to significant problems down the line. Rust, especially in areas with harsh winters, is also a potential concern, particularly on vehicles that haven't been properly stored or maintained. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended.

How long will the 2007 Honda S2000 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Honda S2000 can easily surpass 200,000 miles or provide reliable service for well over 15 years. Many examples are still on the road today with high mileage. Key to longevity is meticulous maintenance, particularly frequent oil changes with high-quality synthetic oil. Long-term durability concerns revolve around wear items like the clutch, soft top, and suspension components. Neglecting these items will shorten the lifespan. While the engine is robust, ignoring warning signs like excessive oil consumption will lead to eventual failure. Rust prevention is also critical, especially in colder climates. Overall, the S2000 is a durable vehicle when cared for properly.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Honda S2000 prioritizes the driving experience over advanced technology. Built-in tech is relatively basic:
  • Entertainment: AM/FM/CD stereo system. Some models may have aftermarket upgrades.

  • Driver-Assistance: Minimal driver-assistance features compared to modern cars. It includes cruise control.

  • Safety: Standard safety features include:
    • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)

    • Dual front airbags

    • Side airbags

    • High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights
Optional features were limited, primarily consisting of dealer-installed accessories like a hardtop, floor mats, or upgraded audio components.

Crash test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS are not readily available for the 2007 S2000 specifically. However, the S2000 generally performed well in crash tests for its era, considering its small size. Its strong chassis contributed to its safety. Modern vehicles offer significantly more advanced safety technology, such as stability control and multiple airbags, which the S2000 lacks. The focus was on providing a raw, unfiltered driving experience, so driver-assistance and advanced safety features were not a priority during its development. The S2000's safety relies more on the driver's skill and awareness than on electronic aids.

2007 Honda S2000 Prices and Market Value

The 2007 Honda S2000 had an original MSRP of approximately $34,000. Current used market prices vary widely, ranging from $20,000 to over $40,000 depending on condition, mileage, and modifications. The S2000 has depreciated relatively slowly compared to other cars, and in recent years, prices have been appreciating. Factors affecting resale value include:
  • Mileage: Lower mileage examples command higher prices.

  • Condition: Excellent condition, with minimal wear and tear, is crucial.

  • Maintenance History: A complete and documented maintenance history is highly desirable.

  • Modifications: While some tasteful modifications can enhance value, excessive or poorly executed modifications can detract from it.

  • Originality: Unmodified examples are often more desirable to collectors.

2007 Honda S2000 Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Honda S2000 is moderately costly to own. Insurance can be higher due to its sports car classification. Fuel costs are reasonable, but premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance, when performed correctly, is relatively straightforward. However, repairs can be expensive, especially for drivetrain components. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting maintenance will lead to costly repairs. While not the most economical car, its reliability can offset some of the higher costs, but it's still more expensive than a basic commuter car.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Honda S2000 Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2007 Honda S2000 competed with vehicles like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, BMW Z4, and Porsche Boxster. In terms of performance, the S2000 offered a unique high-revving engine experience unmatched by the others. The Miata was more affordable and nimble, while the Z4 and Boxster offered more luxury and refinement. The S2000's reliability is generally considered excellent, surpassing the BMW and Porsche. Feature-wise, the S2000 lagged behind the Z4 and Boxster, which offered more technology and comfort features. Price-wise, the Miata was significantly cheaper, while the Z4 and Boxster were more expensive when new.

Alternatives depend on priorities. For pure driving fun at a lower price, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is an excellent choice. For more luxury and refinement, the BMW Z4 or Porsche Boxster are viable options. However, the S2000's unique engine and engaging driving experience set it apart. If reliability and a raw, connected driving feel are paramount, the S2000 remains a compelling choice, especially considering its appreciating value.

Condition is paramount; prioritize well-maintained examples with complete service records. Avoid heavily modified or neglected vehicles. If you seek modern technology, comfort, or a forgiving daily driver, other options may be more suitable. However, for a pure, unadulterated driving experience and potential for appreciation, the S2000 remains a fantastic choice.

My dream car since forever

The car was perfect. Paint didn't have many imperfections or swirls. Rims were redone and finished. Interior looks factory. Carpet clean. Smelled nice and everything is original besides the radio.

A Legend

The S2000 speaks for itself in terms of performance and reliability. I have owned my S2000 for over 5 years now and the only thing I have changed is brakes, tires and a battery. It's no wonder this car still gets compared to modern day cars in its class and manages to keep up with the big boys in every turn. I wished the day of selling mine never came but currently have put it on the market for someone else to enjoy it as much as I have!

A drivers car!

Bought the car in August from a dealer outside DC, drove the car home to Florida....an enjoyable ride, the car was super, handled great....and that awesome motor just purred.... top down until the monsoon rain came somewhere in the night..... 912 miles, 18 hours non stop to Clearwater Florida. I've bought a lot of cars in my life, privately and through dealers.... usually local, this was the first time I flew somewhere to look at a car, not knowing the seller or the car. I have to admit I was apprehensive, but I've had the car a little over a month now and it was a good deal, great car!

She is the best handling and affordable sports car

This is a car I do not want to sell since it is such a fine handling machine and lets me feel free when the top is down. I can still have a conversation with or without the top up.

Biggest Regret...I sold mine!

If you want a true love affair with a car, and you just love fun driving, this is the one to own. Bought this car, drove it for over 32000 miles, (loved each mile of it) cost nothing to own, except a new set of tires, and sold it seven years later for $1000 less than what I originally paid. But now kicking myself for selling it. It was Honda's 50th birthday present to itself and told its engineers to build the best car possible for Honda. Mission accomplished!

Timeless Fun

When leaving my lease of 3 years I was looking for a fun car that had the reliability and was fun to drive. I was searching for the right car for months until I stumbled on the Honda S2000 i feel in love with the design and the interior. The car maintains its value even if it?s aging car . It was made to withstand time and I love every minute of driving it . I was skeptical of using it as a daily commuter but it blew me away with its comfort I don?t mind sitting in traffic with my top down In sonny California !

S2000

This car is a blast to drive fast. It can be frustrating to drive slow in traffic. it isn't very practical, you can barely fit a set of golf clubs. It doesn't get great gas mileage it's noisy you will most likely need to upgrade the stereo. you'd better have a second car for the winter or to carry stuff. there are 1,000,000 reasons not to buy this car. but, when you've had a bad day, you get in this car, crank up your new stereo put the convertible top down and drive home through some back roads, your decision to purchase this car will have been validated.
