The 2002 Nissan Altima marked a significant redesign for the model, entering its third generation. It's a mid-size sedan known for its sporty handling and spacious interior. Model years spanned 2002-2006 for this generation. Key trims included the base XE, GXE, SE, and SL. Original pricing ranged roughly from $16,000 to $23,000. It gained popularity for offering a compelling alternative to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry with a more engaging driving experience.
The Good

The 2002 Altima offers a blend of practicality and excitement. Performance-wise, the available 3.5L V6 engine provides spirited acceleration. It's comfortable with a roomy interior, and its design is more aggressive than competitors. For practical buyers, it presents strong value for money. Emotionally, the sporty handling is appealing.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include possible issues with the catalytic converter, particularly in earlier model years. Some owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, especially with higher mileage. Rust can also be a concern, especially in regions with harsh winters. Premature wear of suspension components is also something to monitor.

What Problems Does the 2002 Nissan Altima Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2002 Nissan Altima include issues with the catalytic converter, particularly in earlier production runs. Some owners have experienced premature failure of the converter, leading to costly repairs. Another common concern is the automatic transmission, with reports of slipping or harsh shifting, especially in higher mileage examples. Rust can be a significant issue, especially in areas where road salt is used during winter. Check rocker panels, wheel wells, and undercarriage. Some owners have reported issues with the cooling system, including radiator leaks and overheating. Suspension components like struts and control arm bushings may wear out prematurely, leading to diminished handling and ride quality. There have been some recalls related to airbags and emissions systems, so it's important to check the vehicle's VIN against recall databases to ensure all necessary repairs have been performed. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues if they are not addressed promptly. Regular maintenance, especially fluid changes, can help mitigate some of these concerns.

How long will the 2002 Nissan Altima last?

With proper maintenance, a 2002 Nissan Altima can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15-20 years of service out of their Altimas. However, longevity depends heavily on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly. Weaknesses that emerge over time include rust, particularly in areas with road salt, and potential issues with the automatic transmission. Suspension components also tend to wear out, requiring replacement to maintain optimal handling and ride quality. Keeping up with maintenance is key to maximizing the lifespan of this vehicle.

If your a mechanic and you know of these cars, if you can maintenance this car accordingly it will serve you well. By doing this you will be forced to put money into, which is fine every used car eventually has problems. The problem with older nissans is that they require much more work and time into these cars. Overall I loved driving the car and would totally get another altima, just not the older models as they have proven to be unreliable and don't have a great reputation.

Recently bought the car with 120,000 miles on it and it had all sorts of problem to make the story short engine blew dont recommend
Never again
if looking to purchase, read reports of engine failures. 2.5 is very poor. 3.5 is better. expect engine problems. I will NEVER purchase a nissan again! Customer commitment is very poor.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Nissan Altima's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly basic by today's standards. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims like the GXE and SL offered upgraded audio systems, with the SL featuring a Bose system. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available. Safety features included standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available on some trims, and side airbags were optional.
The 2002 Altima didn't have the modern technology we expect today like Bluetooth connectivity or touchscreen infotainment. Optional features were primarily focused on comfort and convenience, such as a sunroof, leather seats, and automatic climate control.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) showed the 2002 Altima generally performed well in frontal crash tests. However, side-impact protection was not as strong, earning marginal ratings in some tests. It is crucial to remember that safety standards have advanced considerably since 2002, so while it was considered reasonably safe at the time, it doesn't offer the same level of protection as newer vehicles.

2002 Nissan Altima Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Nissan Altima ranged in price from approximately $16,000 to $23,000, depending on the trim level and options. As a 20+ year old vehicle, current used market prices are significantly lower, typically ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been substantial. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition of the vehicle, mileage, any documented maintenance history, and the presence of any major mechanical issues or rust. V6 models in good condition tend to command slightly higher prices than the base 4-cylinder models.

2002 Nissan Altima Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2002 Nissan Altima are generally low due to its age and value. Fuel costs are moderate, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance can be relatively inexpensive, with readily available parts. However, potential repairs, especially related to the transmission or catalytic converter, can be costly. Overall, the 2002 Altima can be economical to own if it's well-maintained and doesn't require major repairs. Neglecting maintenance can quickly lead to higher long-term ownership costs.

How Does the 2002 Nissan Altima Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2002 Nissan Altima competed with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 626, and Ford Taurus. In terms of performance, the Altima's V6 offered more power and a sportier driving experience than the Accord and Camry's base engines. Feature-wise, it was comparable, although the Camry and Accord often had a slight edge in perceived build quality. Reliability-wise, the Altima wasn't quite as bulletproof as the Camry or Accord, particularly concerning the transmission and catalytic converter. The Mazda 626 offered similar driving dynamics but was less popular. The Ford Taurus offered a larger interior but lacked the Altima's sporty appeal. Price-wise, the Altima was often more affordable than the Camry and Accord. Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord for superior reliability and resale value, albeit at a higher initial cost. The Mazda 626 could be a similar alternative if looking for engaging driving dynamics and potentially lower prices than the Altima. The Hyundai Sonata from the same era also offered a compelling value proposition.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Nissan Altima a Good Sedan?

The 2002 Nissan Altima is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable and reasonably reliable used car. It's worth buying if you find one in good condition with a solid maintenance history and minimal rust. The V6 SE or SL trims offer a more engaging driving experience, but the 4-cylinder models are more fuel-efficient. Avoid examples with obvious transmission problems or excessive rust. Pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended. Given its age, don't expect modern features or safety technology. It's a decent option for basic transportation, but prioritize well-maintained examples over lower prices.

Rushed into buying the xxxxx

Despite my complaining, I really do love my car. I bought mine some 2 years ago, with some 160,000 miles on it. Since then I have now 202,000+ on it. It was clear my car was wrecked, and not taken care of. It has received the buy here pay here treatment. And I have replaced a lot . I have abused this car and some how she still running. I love it and hate it

By far, the best car!

Car is comfy. Owned for 5 years and gave me no issues at all. 3.5 engine gave great speed, car had great stock accessories such as a Bose speaker and sunroof. Pretty efficient on gas and a great ride whether you're traveling alone or in a group of friends. Good trunk space, lots of backseat room for guests and luggage. No complaints at all about this car!
