The Good
The 2009 Maxima boasts strong performance from its V6 engine, appealing to drivers seeking excitement. Comfortable seating and a well-designed interior offer a pleasant experience. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provides a good balance. For practical buyers, the Maxima presents a solid value proposition and adequate reliability (though not flawless).
The Bad
Potential weaknesses include CVT transmission issues, which can be expensive to repair. Oil consumption can be a concern in some models. Electrical problems and premature suspension wear have also been reported. Regular maintenance is crucial. Check for transmission smoothness and listen for any unusual engine noises during a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2009 Nissan Maxima Have?
Electrical issues, including problems with sensors and the car's computer system, have also been reported. Suspension components, particularly struts and bushings, can wear out prematurely, leading to a less comfortable ride and potential handling problems.
While specific recall information should be verified with official sources like the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), common recalls for this era of Nissan vehicles often related to airbag systems or fuel system components. Long-term reliability concerns primarily focus on the CVT transmission's durability. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating these potential issues. Checking for any unusual noises or behavior from the transmission during a test drive is highly recommended.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars, but the SL trim included rear parking sensors. Safety features included standard antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA should be consulted for specific performance. Generally, the 2009 Maxima performed well in crash tests, providing adequate occupant protection. The lack of advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking is a noticeable difference compared to newer vehicles. The entertainment system, while functional, lacks modern connectivity options like Bluetooth audio streaming in the base trim (Bluetooth for phone calls was available).

How Does the 2009 Nissan Maxima Compare to Other Sedan?
Regarding features, the Maxima offered a competitive set of standard and optional equipment. However, its reliability, particularly the CVT transmission, was a weaker point compared to the Toyota and Honda. The Acura TSX provided a more upscale experience, but at a higher price point.
Price-wise, the Maxima was generally competitive, often offering a good value proposition. For someone prioritizing reliability above all else, the Toyota Avalon or Honda Accord V6 would be better alternatives. If a more luxurious experience is desired, the Acura TSX is worth considering, provided the budget allows. The Buick LaCrosse of the same year is also a comparable option, offering a blend of comfort and features. The Maxima excelled at providing a sporty driving experience in a relatively affordable package.
