The Good
The 2001 Maxima boasts strong performance from its V6, appealing to enthusiasts. Its relative reliability and comfortable interior make it practical. The sleek design adds emotional appeal. Good value for money and decent fuel efficiency further enhance its desirability. It's a fun-to-drive, yet sensible choice.
The Bad
Watch out for potential issues with the automatic transmission, particularly slipping or hard shifts. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas with road salt. Oxygen sensors and catalytic converters are known to fail. Oil leaks are also fairly common on higher mileage examples. Suspension components wear out over time.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2001 Nissan Maxima Have?
Rust can be a concern, especially in regions with harsh winters and salted roads. Suspension components, such as struts and control arm bushings, may wear out, resulting in a less comfortable ride and potentially affecting handling. The mass airflow sensor (MAF) is also known to fail, causing poor engine performance. Ignition coils are another potential weak point.
While there weren't any significant recalls specifically targeting the 2001 model year with widespread impact, it's essential to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any past or pending recalls related to safety issues or defects. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the automatic transmission and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the car ages. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can help extend the lifespan of the vehicle.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2001 Maxima a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap frontal crash test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a 4-star rating for driver and passenger in the frontal crash test, and 4 stars for side impact protection.
The built-in tech was basic by modern standards. Features like navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration were not available. How Does the 2001 Nissan Maxima Compare to Other Sedan?
Reliability is a mixed bag. The Camry is generally considered more reliable long-term, while the Accord is similar. The Maxima's automatic transmission can be a weak point. Price-wise, the Maxima was competitive.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry (for superior reliability), the Honda Accord (for a balanced blend of attributes), and the Acura TL (for a more luxurious experience at a similar price point when new). The Mazda 626 offered a sportier driving experience closer to the Maxima's, but its reliability wasn't as strong as the Japanese competition. If reliability is a top priority, the Camry is a better choice. If you're seeking a similar driving experience with potentially lower maintenance costs, the Accord might be a better fit.

Final Verdict: Is the 2001 Nissan Maxima a Good Sedan?

Would Buy It AgainThis has been a solid and reliable car for 20 years! If Nissan offered a Maxima today with a regular automatic transmission I would eagerly purchase one, but not with a CVT. I only drive 3400 miles per year but I have experienced problems that you would expect on a much higher mileage car. Two oxygen sensors failed at 28000 miles; the radiator cracked at 33000 miles; the passenger side front strut failed at 37000 miles; there is currently an oil leak the dealer can't locate; and the radiator lower support has been rusted out since about 2004. Despite the continuing maintenance issues I still love this car and its styling and performance.

Most reliable vehicle I have ever purchasedAlso the least expensive car I ever bought, paying only $800 cash. The seller had to jump start an old battery to start it. I never had any issues with this car.

Make You Want To Buy Another OneDefinitely a good car. Gets decent mpg(20 in city), fairly comfortable ride, all buttons and functions holding up very well!

Reliable and still looks pretty goodBought this car used with 75,000 miles on it almost 5 years ago....I have 107,000 miles on it now - I do not drive that much - mostly to and from work and running local errands. I would have never considered buying a used Maxima (reputation for being beat on by high school / college aged kids) but found this one owner vehicle that was only being sold due to a relocation cross country. I have spent about $1,800 on repairs over the years but considering how comfortable this car is and how dependable it has been - I do not think that is too bad, especially for a 2001. My only regret?...I did not get the small spots of body rot around the wheels taken care of...now its much worse...I always look at others and see this issue in the same area! Catch it early or at least be warned!

Got my money out of itBought this car in 2005 as a certified pre-owned vehicle. Not a bad car when I purchased it, except for the 'little' things that kept going wrong with it. At first the coil packs went, and it was a known issue with Nissan but would't change them under warranty unless it had failed. Then the countless other things like 4 starters, 3 alternators, 4 rear calipers, every speaker in the car slowly failed as well except for the pillar tweeters and the driver side door speaker. Oh and the rust... every time I see this model year I go and look around the rear wheel wells and admire how it just rusts.. Then finally the exhaust system went (rust) along with the notorious pre-cat that goes which I never decided to fix. The straw that finished my 10 years with this car was the fact you had to never take your foot off the gas as the idle air control valve started to die as well. Never had a car were so many little thing went bad so often.. But hey, got my money out of it, and now from what the dealership told me some guy in south america has a nice rusty crapbox to drive around in.

Most comfortable, safe and reliable car everI'm an auto broker and purchased my '95 Maxima used from the client who originally bought it from me. I sold my '96 Honda Accord so I could buy it. The Accord caused all kinds of back problems for me. I've driven the Maxima on several trips of over 500 in one day and no problems at all. I now have 176,000 mi. on it and know I can get another 100K. Had to replace the alternator this year and the idle switch. Replaced the radiator 3 yrs ago, but all in all, much better than having $400/mo car payments. If this one goes, I'll buy another one. And it still looks great. The paint is extraordinary on these cars.

The best car I have ever owned hands down.I bought this car due to the looks that I have loved. This is the best car I have ever owned. The car has the performance and reliability like no other vehicle I have ever owned before. I now have 210000 miles and still passes inspection with no problem. I WOULD buy another one as I am looking for another. Look no further if you are shopping for one or gave it any thought. This is the car to buy.
