The 2001 Nissan Maxima, part of the fifth generation (1999-2003), is a mid-size sedan known for its sporty handling and potent V6 engine. Available in trims like the GXE, SE, and GLE, it offered a blend of performance and luxury. Its popularity stemmed from its "four-door sports car" reputation. When new, it ranged from about $22,000 to $28,000. It stands out due to its balanced performance.
The Good

The 2001 Maxima boasts strong performance from its V6, appealing to enthusiasts. Its relative reliability and comfortable interior make it practical. The sleek design adds emotional appeal. Good value for money and decent fuel efficiency further enhance its desirability. It's a fun-to-drive, yet sensible choice.

The Bad

Watch out for potential issues with the automatic transmission, particularly slipping or hard shifts. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas with road salt. Oxygen sensors and catalytic converters are known to fail. Oil leaks are also fairly common on higher mileage examples. Suspension components wear out over time.

2001 Nissan Maxima: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: 3.0L V6 (VQ30DE)

  • Fuel Economy: Approximately 19 mpg city / 26 mpg highway (depending on driving habits and transmission)
  • 0-60 Times: Around 7.0 seconds
  • Towing Capacity: Not recommended or rated for towing.
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • GXE (Base): Cloth upholstery, power windows and locks, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with cassette player, 15-inch wheels.

What Problems Does the 2001 Nissan Maxima Have?

The 2001 Nissan Maxima is generally considered a reliable vehicle, but some frequently reported problems include issues with the automatic transmission, particularly slipping or rough shifting, especially at higher mileages. Oxygen sensors and catalytic converters tend to fail over time, leading to emissions problems. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets and rear main seal, are also relatively common.

Rust can be a concern, especially in regions with harsh winters and salted roads. Suspension components, such as struts and control arm bushings, may wear out, resulting in a less comfortable ride and potentially affecting handling. The mass airflow sensor (MAF) is also known to fail, causing poor engine performance. Ignition coils are another potential weak point.

While there weren't any significant recalls specifically targeting the 2001 model year with widespread impact, it's essential to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any past or pending recalls related to safety issues or defects. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the automatic transmission and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the car ages. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can help extend the lifespan of the vehicle.

How long will the 2001 Nissan Maxima last?

With proper maintenance, a 2001 Nissan Maxima can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles. Years of service can range from 15 to 20 years depending on care. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses include potential transmission issues and rust. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

I'm an auto broker and purchased my '95 Maxima used from the client who originally bought it from me. I sold my '96 Honda Accord so I could buy it. The Accord caused all kinds of back problems for me. I've driven the Maxima on several trips of over 500 in one day and no problems at all. I now have 176,000 mi. on it and know I can get another 100K. Had to replace the alternator this year and the idle switch. Replaced the radiator 3 yrs ago, but all in all, much better than having $400/mo car payments. If this one goes, I'll buy another one. And it still looks great. The paint is extraordinary on these cars.

I have owned this card and traded in for a new Altima since needed a new car. Runs great and I still miss driving the power it had. Gives a great mileage. Don't look another one...

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2001 Nissan Maxima offered a respectable level of technology for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM stereo with a cassette player. Higher trims, like the GLE and optionally on the SE, featured a Bose audio system with a CD player. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available.

Safety features included dual front airbags as standard. Side-impact airbags were optional. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard on all trims. There were no electronic stability control systems available.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2001 Maxima a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap frontal crash test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a 4-star rating for driver and passenger in the frontal crash test, and 4 stars for side impact protection.

The built-in tech was basic by modern standards. Features like navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration were not available. The focus was on providing a comfortable and reliable driving experience. The optional Bose audio system was a highlight for audiophiles, but overall, the tech offerings were limited compared to newer vehicles.

2001 Nissan Maxima Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2001 Nissan Maxima ranged from approximately $22,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $2,000 to $6,000. Depreciation has been significant due to age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and location. Models with low mileage and well-documented maintenance records command higher prices. Rust-free examples are also more valuable. High mileage examples or those needing significant repairs will be worth considerably less.

2001 Nissan Maxima Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2001 Nissan Maxima are relatively low due to its age and moderate value. Fuel costs are average, with a combined MPG around 22. Maintenance can be moderate if the car is well-maintained. Repairs can become costly as the car ages, especially if major components like the transmission or engine need work. Overall, it's not particularly costly to own if you're prepared for potential repairs. Finding a well-maintained example is key to keeping ownership costs down.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2001 Nissan Maxima Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2001 Nissan Maxima competed against cars like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Mazda 626. In terms of performance, the Maxima often held an edge, particularly with its V6 engine, which offered more power than the base engines in the Accord and Camry. Features were comparable across the board, although the Maxima's available Bose audio system was a plus for some.

Reliability is a mixed bag. The Camry is generally considered more reliable long-term, while the Accord is similar. The Maxima's automatic transmission can be a weak point. Price-wise, the Maxima was competitive.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry (for superior reliability), the Honda Accord (for a balanced blend of attributes), and the Acura TL (for a more luxurious experience at a similar price point when new). The Mazda 626 offered a sportier driving experience closer to the Maxima's, but its reliability wasn't as strong as the Japanese competition. If reliability is a top priority, the Camry is a better choice. If you're seeking a similar driving experience with potentially lower maintenance costs, the Accord might be a better fit.

Final Verdict: Is the 2001 Nissan Maxima a Good Sedan?

The 2001 Nissan Maxima is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a fun-to-drive sedan with a potent engine. It's worth buying *used* if you can find a well-maintained example with a solid service history and low mileage. The SE trim with the manual transmission is particularly desirable for driving enthusiasts. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial to identify potential issues, especially with the transmission and rust. Given its age, factor in potential maintenance costs. It is not recommended to purchase new. If you prioritize ultimate reliability above all else, a Toyota Camry might be a safer bet.

Would Buy It Again

This has been a solid and reliable car for 20 years! If Nissan offered a Maxima today with a regular automatic transmission I would eagerly purchase one, but not with a CVT. I only drive 3400 miles per year but I have experienced problems that you would expect on a much higher mileage car. Two oxygen sensors failed at 28000 miles; the radiator cracked at 33000 miles; the passenger side front strut failed at 37000 miles; there is currently an oil leak the dealer can't locate; and the radiator lower support has been rusted out since about 2004. Despite the continuing maintenance issues I still love this car and its styling and performance.

Most reliable vehicle I have ever purchased

Also the least expensive car I ever bought, paying only $800 cash. The seller had to jump start an old battery to start it. I never had any issues with this car.

Reliable and still looks pretty good

Bought this car used with 75,000 miles on it almost 5 years ago....I have 107,000 miles on it now - I do not drive that much - mostly to and from work and running local errands. I would have never considered buying a used Maxima (reputation for being beat on by high school / college aged kids) but found this one owner vehicle that was only being sold due to a relocation cross country. I have spent about $1,800 on repairs over the years but considering how comfortable this car is and how dependable it has been - I do not think that is too bad, especially for a 2001. My only regret?...I did not get the small spots of body rot around the wheels taken care of...now its much worse...I always look at others and see this issue in the same area! Catch it early or at least be warned!

Got my money out of it

Bought this car in 2005 as a certified pre-owned vehicle. Not a bad car when I purchased it, except for the 'little' things that kept going wrong with it. At first the coil packs went, and it was a known issue with Nissan but would't change them under warranty unless it had failed. Then the countless other things like 4 starters, 3 alternators, 4 rear calipers, every speaker in the car slowly failed as well except for the pillar tweeters and the driver side door speaker. Oh and the rust... every time I see this model year I go and look around the rear wheel wells and admire how it just rusts.. Then finally the exhaust system went (rust) along with the notorious pre-cat that goes which I never decided to fix. The straw that finished my 10 years with this car was the fact you had to never take your foot off the gas as the idle air control valve started to die as well. Never had a car were so many little thing went bad so often.. But hey, got my money out of it, and now from what the dealership told me some guy in south america has a nice rusty crapbox to drive around in.

AWSOME CAR on August 28, 2013

The best car I have ever owned hands down.

I bought this car due to the looks that I have loved. This is the best car I have ever owned. The car has the performance and reliability like no other vehicle I have ever owned before. I now have 210000 miles and still passes inspection with no problem. I WOULD buy another one as I am looking for another. Look no further if you are shopping for one or gave it any thought. This is the car to buy.
