2017 Nissan Maxima Review: Reliable Full Size Sedan With Affordable Ownership Costs

Rating: 4.69
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Nissan Maxima is a full-size sedan, often dubbed a "four-door sports car" by Nissan. It's part of the eighth generation (2016-2023). Key trims include the S, SV, SL, SR, and Platinum. The pricing range when new was approximately $33,000 to $40,000. Its sporty styling, powerful V6 engine, and near-luxury features made it a popular choice for those wanting a more engaging driving experience than a typical sedan.
The Good

The 2017 Maxima offers a potent V6 engine delivering satisfying performance. It's known for above-average reliability and a comfortable, well-appointed interior. The sleek design appeals to those seeking a stylish sedan. Fuel efficiency is respectable for its class. While not the cheapest, it provides good value for its features and performance, balancing practicality with driving enjoyment.

The Bad

The 2017 Maxima's continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a potential weak point, with some owners reporting issues. Rear visibility can be challenging due to the car's design. The infotainment system, while functional, isn't the most modern or intuitive. Also, the back seat space may not be as generous as some other full-size sedans.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2017 Nissan Maxima Have?

The most frequently reported problem with the 2017 Nissan Maxima revolves around its continuously variable transmission (CVT). Some owners have experienced shuddering, hesitation, or complete transmission failure, often at relatively low mileage. While Nissan extended the warranty on some CVTs in certain model years (check with Nissan for specific vehicles), this remains a significant concern.

Other potential issues include electrical problems, such as issues with the infotainment system or sensors. Some owners have reported problems with the air conditioning system.

Recalls for the 2017 Maxima have included issues related to the antilock braking system (ABS) and fuel leaks, which could increase the risk of a crash or fire. It's essential to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information and ensure any applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability hinges largely on the CVT's health. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes at recommended intervals (or even more frequently), can help mitigate the risk of CVT failure. However, it's still a potential weak point that buyers should be aware of and factor into their decision.

How long will the 2017 Nissan Maxima last?

With good maintenance, a 2017 Nissan Maxima can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, the key factor affecting longevity is the CVT's durability. Aggressive driving habits and infrequent CVT fluid changes can significantly shorten its lifespan. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes, brake service, and addressing any issues promptly, is crucial for long-term reliability. Rust can be a concern in colder climates where road salt is used, so regular washing and undercoating can help extend the car's life.

I own the 2017 Maxima SV. It’s black and I love how it looks. For a V6 I’m so impressed with the gas mileage! it gets 34 MPG on average which is so amazing. It’s a great upgrade from my Altima.

I feel unsafe in his cart with my family the engine has been leaking since day one and Nissan America does not help anyone with their cars I call the better business bureau to get help

The car was beautiful, but drove like crap. I normally don't get used cars, but wanted to give it a chance. I test drove 2 and they both had the same problem. A shaking steering wheel...NO BEUNO!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Nissan Maxima comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports. Higher trims offer Apple CarPlay (but not Android Auto, a notable omission for the year). The Bose premium audio system, available on SL and higher trims, provides excellent sound quality.

Driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking (SL and Platinum), blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert (SV and higher). The Platinum trim adds a driver attention alert system and around-view monitor.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. The 2017 Maxima received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" designation.

Optional features, depending on the trim level, include a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a power rear sunshade, and rain-sensing wipers. The lack of Android Auto is a drawback for some users, but overall, the 2017 Maxima provides a good range of tech and safety features for its class.

2017 Nissan Maxima Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Nissan Maxima ranged from approximately $33,000 for the base S trim to around $40,000 for the top-of-the-line Platinum. Used market prices currently range from roughly $16,000 to $24,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Maxima has experienced moderate depreciation, typical for sedans in its class. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and location. Models with lower mileage and a clean title command higher prices. The potential for CVT issues can negatively impact resale value.

2017 Nissan Maxima Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2017 Nissan Maxima are generally moderate, aligning with other full-size sedans. Fuel costs are reasonable, given its V6 engine. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is affordable. However, potential CVT repairs or replacements can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Overall, the Maxima is neither the most economical nor the most expensive car to own, but the CVT should be a major consideration in budgeting for potential repairs.

2017 Nissan Maxima Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Nissan Maxima is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Nissan Maxima Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2017 Nissan Maxima competes with vehicles like the Toyota Avalon, Buick LaCrosse, and Chrysler 300. In terms of performance, the Maxima's V6 engine is competitive. Feature-wise, it offers a comparable range of technology and comfort amenities.

Reliability is where the Maxima falls short compared to the Toyota Avalon, known for its excellent dependability. The Buick LaCrosse offers a more comfortable and luxurious ride, while the Chrysler 300 provides a bolder, more muscular design.

Price-wise, the Maxima is generally in the same ballpark as its competitors. However, given the potential for CVT issues, the Toyota Avalon might be a better alternative for buyers prioritizing long-term reliability and lower maintenance costs. The Buick LaCrosse offers a more refined interior and ride, while the Chrysler 300 caters to those seeking a more distinctive and powerful-looking sedan. If performance is a top priority, and the CVT issue is less concerning, the Maxima can still be a compelling choice. Buyers should thoroughly research and consider their individual needs and priorities before making a decision.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Nissan Maxima a Good Sedan?

The 2017 Nissan Maxima is ideal for those seeking a stylish, sporty sedan with a powerful V6 engine and a good array of features. It's worth buying, especially if you can find a well-maintained example with documented CVT service history. Buying a lower-mileage example and obtaining a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended. Avoid models that show signs of CVT issues. The SL or Platinum trims offer the best balance of features and value. Ultimately, the Maxima offers a unique blend of performance and style, but potential buyers must carefully consider the CVT's reliability.

First maxima but, maybe not the last!

So my wife wanted another car. Yeah she drove a Hyundai elentra a couple of years and a fusion before that etc. I've always liked Maximas but never thought of buying. So we head out to the dealer to take a look. Now we looked at these and other cars however, the curiosity about the maxima had us thinking "try it" . My wife and I test drove it and wow! The styling, the acceleration, the super comfortable leather...man! They brought a 2018 Honda accord ex and we told that salesperson to get rid of it! Never even tried to test drive it! Now I want to give her my roaring, powerful Silverado so I can drive that quiet, smooth, comfortable, powerful, excellent handling maxima sv!!

Fun car especially in sports mode

There is plenty of room for the driver and passenger. The seats recline almost flat. The backseat has amble room for back seat passengers and a car seat. And more space than I know what to do with in the trunk. The techs tools are fun too; I just need to learn where everything is.
