Rating: 4.48
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Nissan Rogue is a compact SUV, known for its comfortable ride and available third-row seating (on some models), a relative rarity in its class. It's part of the Rogue's second generation, which started in 2014. Key trims include S, SV, and SL. The original pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $30,000. Its popularity stems from its fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and family-friendly features.
The Good

The 2016 Nissan Rogue offers a smooth, comfortable ride, appealing to those prioritizing comfort. Its fuel efficiency makes it a practical choice. The stylish design and available tech features can appeal to emotional buyers. It also represents good value for its price, providing a lot of features for the money. Reliability is generally good, contributing to peace of mind.

The Bad

The 2016 Nissan Rogue's engine performance can feel underpowered, particularly when fully loaded. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been known to have issues, so inspect it thoroughly before buying. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic systems and the panoramic sunroof (if equipped). Handling isn't as sporty as some rivals.

What Problems Does the 2016 Nissan Rogue Have?

The 2016 Nissan Rogue has had a few frequently reported problems. The most significant concern revolves around the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Many owners have reported experiencing transmission slipping, shuddering, or complete failure, sometimes at relatively low mileage. These CVT issues can be costly to repair. Other reported problems include issues with the electronic systems, such as the infotainment screen freezing or malfunctioning. Some owners have also reported problems with the air conditioning system and the power windows. There have been recalls for the 2016 Rogue, including issues related to airbags and fuel systems. It is essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability concerns mainly center around the CVT. While some owners experience no issues, the potential for transmission problems is a factor to consider. Premature wear of brake components has also been noted. Before purchasing a used 2016 Rogue, thoroughly inspect the CVT, review the vehicle's maintenance history, and check for any outstanding recalls.

How long will the 2016 Nissan Rogue last?

With good maintenance, a 2016 Nissan Rogue can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Average mileage depends heavily on driving habits and maintenance schedules. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), transmission fluid changes (every 30,000-60,000 miles), and other scheduled maintenance are crucial. The CVT is the primary long-term durability concern. Consistent maintenance, including fluid changes, can help prolong its life, but it remains a potential weak point. Other areas to monitor include suspension components, especially if driven frequently on rough roads, and the electronic systems.

I bought my 2016 Rogue SL in 2016 and it is now 2024. I have to say it is one of the best cars I have ever owned, I only have 58,000 miles on it going into my 8th year of ownership. I did not get the moonroof as that was not a problem I wanted, but I did get the SL with the Red exterior and Almond interior (all leather). It has hands free talking and texting, lots of whistle and bells, it beeps when backing up if there is a car or person behind you, and the excellent stereo system for just a few of the SL features. I did not have the blind spot monitor( I wish I did) or the adaptive cruise control, other than that I have every other option. The best gas mileage I got was 36mpg on the highway, and I could drive from Atlanta to Mobile on one tank of guess which is awesome. I have taken very good care of the car with a regular maintained schedule with all the records in the glove box and I have never had one problem with this car at all. The smooth ride had sold me over and I also have a KIA Sorento of the same year, and it rides like a freight train compared to the rogue. Maybe I just got lucky, and got a great car, but everyone I talk to that has a Rogue all seem to love theirs as well as I do mine. I can only hope the newer models are as reliable as my 2016, as I plan on driving it until it can no longer go or I wear out before it does. This is just my honest opinion; I am no car salesman or have any stock or reason to brag on my Nissan Rogue, other than it has been a great ride these last going on 8 years.

2016 Rogue transmission can shift itself into neutral while driving; powers down all the gears! No power, we had to coast to a stop thru traffic. We could have been killed, but for the Grace of God!

Replaced the drivers door window system 5/2023 when it failed, now in 2024 THE SAME ISSUE. This time they claim it's deeper into the wire harness. They also announced a related recall (wire corrosion) but they eliminated my recall repair over car milage. Sketchy at best, it's a safety issue that has a fire risk, small as that may be but it relates to the device failure as well. That's not standing up for the vehicle repair or the underlying known related recall issue. It's quoted for another $1000 needed over last year's $500 repair for the same net problem.

Have had major break problems. Seats are falling apart. navigation turns off in middle of driving. Door latches have stuck wouldn't shut. Plus much more.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Nissan Rogue offers a decent array of tech and safety features, even in the base S trim. Standard features include a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. The SV trim adds NissanConnect with mobile apps, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The SL trim boasts leather upholstery, a larger touchscreen, navigation, a Bose audio system, and a surround-view camera. Optional features include LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and automatic emergency braking (on SL models). Driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning were available on higher trims or as part of packages.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2016 Rogue an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the 2016 Rogue a "Top Safety Pick" rating. Safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags. The availability of advanced safety tech like blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking contributes to a safer driving experience. The infotainment system is generally user-friendly, although the base model's smaller screen can feel dated compared to competitors.

2016 Nissan Rogue Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Nissan Rogue had a starting MSRP of around $23,000 for the base S trim, reaching up to $30,000 for a fully-loaded SL model. Current used market prices range from approximately $10,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been moderate, typical for a mainstream compact SUV. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has desirable options like all-wheel drive or advanced safety features. A clean title and documented service history also contribute to higher resale value. Models with known CVT issues or accident history will depreciate more significantly.

2016 Nissan Rogue Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Nissan Rogue is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is a strong point, helping to keep fuel costs down. Routine maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. However, potential CVT repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. If the CVT needs replacement, it can be a costly repair. It's wise to factor this potential expense into your ownership budget. Repair costs for other components are generally average for its class.

2016 Nissan Rogue Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Nissan Rogue is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Nissan Rogue Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Nissan Rogue competes with popular compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Rogue lags behind the CX-5 and Escape, which offer more engaging driving experiences and stronger engine options. The CR-V and RAV4 are known for their superior reliability, making them arguably better choices for long-term ownership. The Rogue's main advantage is its available third-row seating (on some models), which is rare in this class. In terms of features, the Rogue is competitive, especially in higher trims. Price-wise, the Rogue is often slightly more affordable than the CR-V and RAV4.
Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V, known for its reliability and spacious interior; the Toyota RAV4, offering excellent fuel economy and a strong reputation; and the Mazda CX-5, providing a more sporty driving experience and stylish design. If reliability is a top priority, the CR-V or RAV4 are better choices. If you value driving dynamics, the CX-5 is a superior option. If third-row seating is a must-have, and the Rogue is the most affordable with this feature, ensure the transmission is in good condition.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Nissan Rogue a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Nissan Rogue is ideal for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing fuel efficiency and a comfortable ride, and who may need occasional third-row seating (if equipped). It's worth buying used if you can find one with a well-documented maintenance history and a healthy CVT. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended, with a focus on the transmission. The SV or SL trims offer a better value proposition with added features, but also come at a higher price. If reliability is your utmost concern, other SUVs like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 might be better choices. Consider a 2017 or newer model, as Nissan addressed some of the earlier CVT issues in later years.

I bought a 2016 SL used in 2017 from the dealer.

I bought a 2016 SL used in 2017 from the dealer. It has a lot of great features. The SL model rides and handles a lot better then lower models. Good inside room for passengers and storage. Pretty good gas mileage and pickup for the size. No CVT issues so far that I've heard of. Suggest you pay attention to CVT maintenance as it requires more service than your standard geared transmission. I got that from a 2015 Juke I still own. Renewed maintenance resolved the dreaded CVT "stumble".

What kind of poorly designed lemon allows a back seat

What kind of poorly designed lemon allows a back seat passenger to kick a water bottle under the front passenger seat, thus DISABLING THE AIRBAG! This is by far the most distressing part of this low end SUV for me. The noise, the shimmies, the lack of comfort, the cheapness, is all trumped by a faulty airbag system that WILL kill someone in time!

Transmission Issues!!!

The transmission has been slipping since 80,000 miles. Recently had an issue where after sitting at a red light the car would not shift out of first gear. The Rouge takes off VERY slowly and if I try to give it some gas the car struggles to shift between first and second gear.
