Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2020 Nissan Rogue is a compact SUV, part of the Rogue's second generation (2014-2020). Key trims include S, SV, and SL. Its popularity stems from its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and user-friendly technology. New, it ranged from roughly $25,000 to $35,000. It stands out for its available ProPilot Assist, a driver-assistance system, and its generally appealing overall package for families.
The Good

The 2020 Nissan Rogue offers a comfortable ride, appealing to those seeking a relaxed driving experience. Its fuel efficiency is a practical advantage, while the spacious interior and available safety features provide peace of mind for families. It presents good value for the money, balancing features with price. The exterior design is also modern and attractive.

The Bad

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's engine performance can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded or going uphill. Some owners have reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). The infotainment system, while user-friendly, can feel dated compared to rivals. Listen for any CVT noises during test drives and check service history.

What Problems Does the 2020 Nissan Rogue Have?

The 2020 Nissan Rogue has some reported issues, primarily revolving around the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Some owners have reported shuddering, hesitation, or even complete transmission failure at relatively low mileages. It's crucial to check the service history for CVT maintenance or repairs. Other reported problems include issues with the automatic emergency braking system, where it may activate unnecessarily.

Recalls have been issued for the 2020 Rogue, so checking the NHTSA website for open recalls is highly recommended before purchasing a used model. Some recalls may relate to electrical issues or brake system malfunctions. Long-term reliability concerns tend to focus on the CVT's durability and the potential for costly repairs down the line. While not all 2020 Rogues will experience these problems, they are common enough to warrant careful consideration and inspection. Always have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a trusted mechanic, with particular attention paid to the CVT's performance and overall condition. The 2020 model has fewer reported complaints than some previous years, but the CVT remains a point of concern.

How long will the 2020 Nissan Rogue last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2020 Nissan Rogue can potentially reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. The key factor is diligent servicing, especially regarding the CVT. Changing the CVT fluid regularly (every 30,000-60,000 miles) is crucial for longevity. Weaknesses often appear in the CVT as mileage increases; signs include slipping, hesitation, or unusual noises. Suspension components and electronics may also require attention as the vehicle ages. Overall, proper care will significantly extend its lifespan.

I just picked up a 2020 Rogue basic model with AWD, they sure have changed since my last one, in a good way. I’ve had a 2010 and a 2012 SL models. That alone says something having owned 3 now. Great crossover, decent in the snow, I’ve only had AWD models really good on gas! Very dependable!

I'd been looking at SUV's and kept coming back to the Rogue. When I found this cobalt blue one, I knew it was meant for me. I love the safety features, especially the blind spot and the automatic trunk lift. The keyless entry takes getting used to when you've used keys for over 50 years, but I'm liking it. It rides very well. I don't understand Consumer Reports report on this where it got a 3 out of 5 stars from people who had bought the 2020 car. So far, I'm loving the smooth ride and the acoustics as well. No complaints so far.

I bought my car new in 2020. After a couple of months having the car. I would be on the road and the malfunction light turns on. Took it in 5 times for same problem 2020 to 2024. Not happy with car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Nissan Rogue comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a rearview camera, and a four-speaker audio system. Higher trims offer features like a larger touchscreen (though still 7-inch), a Bose premium audio system, and navigation. Driver-assistance features include standard automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control and rear automatic braking are available on the SV and SL trims.

ProPilot Assist, an optional feature on the SV and SL, combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist to help ease highway driving. Safety features are robust, with standard features across all trims. The 2020 Nissan Rogue received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. IIHS gave it a "Top Safety Pick" award. NHTSA ratings typically include 4 or 5 stars overall, but specific ratings can vary by crash test. The Rogue's suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies makes it a family-friendly option. Tech, while not cutting-edge, is generally user-friendly and functional, especially with the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2020 Nissan Rogue Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2020 Nissan Rogue ranged from approximately $25,000 (S trim) to $35,000 (SL trim with options). Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $16,000 to $24,000. The Rogue depreciates at a moderate rate, similar to other vehicles in its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and trim level. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and higher trims (SV, SL) generally command higher prices. Demand for SUVs also influences resale value.

2020 Nissan Rogue Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2020 Nissan Rogue are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable due to its decent fuel economy. Maintenance costs are also average, with routine services like oil changes and tire rotations being relatively affordable. However, potential CVT repairs could significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Repair costs are generally moderate, but some parts can be expensive. Overall, the Rogue is reasonably economical to own, *unless* major CVT issues arise.

2020 Nissan Rogue Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Nissan Rogue is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Nissan Rogue Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Nissan Rogue competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Rogue's engine feels less powerful than the RAV4 or CX-5. The CR-V offers similar performance but often edges out the Rogue in reliability. Feature-wise, the Rogue holds its own, offering a decent array of tech and safety features, especially in higher trims.

Price-wise, the Rogue is often competitive, sometimes offering a slightly lower entry price than the RAV4 or CR-V. However, reliability concerns with the CVT place it behind these rivals. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience and a more premium interior feel. The Ford Escape offers a wider range of engine options. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are better alternatives. If driving enjoyment is key, the Mazda CX-5 is a strong contender. If you prefer a similar experience, compare with the Hyundai Tucson.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Nissan Rogue a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Nissan Rogue is ideal for buyers prioritizing comfort, space, and a user-friendly infotainment system in a compact SUV. It's worth buying *if* you find a well-maintained used model with a documented history of CVT servicing and a clean bill of health from a pre-purchase inspection. Opting for the SV or SL trims adds desirable features like adaptive cruise control and ProPilot Assist. However, be aware of the potential for CVT issues and factor that into your decision. The RAV4 and CR-V are generally more reliable, but the Rogue can be a good value if purchased carefully. Negotiate price based on the vehicle's history and condition.

A few months after the 30,000 miles service, the car don't stared at all and it was towed to the dealer. Service department call me the next day to comunicate me that the auto need a complete repair on the fuel system and will cost almost $3,000.00 and the warranty do not cover it.!!!

No regrets

I traded in my Frontier for this and needless to say, I'm not disappointed. This had less than 6k on miles when I purchased it(covid lease). My spouse has a Rogue and it's lasted the 12 years owned, so I believed this is my reason to own one myself!

I know what a transmission should feel like

All the features of this car are on the positive side save one. From day one the Transmission felt strange but because it was a new car I felt it would work itself out or I would get used to it. Then one day my wife said to me it sounds like the transmission is slipping and then I realized tha she who know nothing about cars felt what I did. Then Covid hit. As soon as I was able I took it in and the dealer told me tht unless a code comes up there is nothing to that can be done and it felt OK to the service manager and the certified mechanic who told me that the tranny feels that way because it is a CVT constant velosity transmission. Ben driving for 55 years and I am very uncomfortable driving an otherwise good verhicle and I am surprised that a company of Nissan's caliber would find this performance acceptable, I do not.
