2013 Toyota Tacoma Review: A Reliable Small Truck With Excellent Off-Road Capabilities

Rating: 4.34
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Toyota Tacoma is a compact/mid-size pickup truck known for its reliability and off-road prowess. It's part of the Tacoma's second generation (2005-2015). Body styles include Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab. Key trims are the base, SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $18,000 to $32,000. It's popular for its strong resale value and reputation for durability.
The Good

The 2013 Tacoma boasts legendary Toyota reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Performance is solid, especially with the V6, and the design is ruggedly handsome. For emotional buyers, it offers adventure and the satisfaction of owning a dependable truck. While not the most comfortable, it holds its value well, making it a smart buy overall. The Tacoma offers a good balance of capability and longevity.

The Bad

The 2013 Tacoma's weaknesses include a somewhat cramped rear seat in Access Cab models and a relatively stiff ride. Fuel economy isn't class-leading. Rust, especially in regions with road salt, can be a concern, so inspect the frame carefully. The interior materials can feel dated compared to newer trucks. Also, check for differential howl, a common Tacoma issue.

What Problems Does the 2013 Toyota Tacoma Have?

The 2013 Toyota Tacoma, while generally reliable, does have some frequently reported problems. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas where road salt is used. The frame should be thoroughly inspected for corrosion before purchase. Differential howl, a whining noise from the rear differential, is another common issue, although it doesn't always indicate a critical problem. Some owners have reported issues with the leaf springs, leading to sagging or even breakage.

Recalls for the 2013 Tacoma could include issues related to the fuel pump (potentially causing engine stalling), and airbag inflators (Takata airbags). It's essential to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information related to your specific vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability concerns are primarily related to preventative maintenance. Neglecting regular oil changes or other scheduled services can accelerate wear and tear. The automatic transmission is generally robust but should be serviced according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Some owners have experienced issues with the electronic stability control (VSC) system, though this is less frequent. Check for proper operation of all electrical components, including the lights, power windows, and door locks.

How long will the 2013 Toyota Tacoma last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Toyota Tacoma can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 300,000 miles with original engines and transmissions. The key to longevity is consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items. However, rust remains a significant long-term durability concern, especially in colder climates. Suspension components, such as ball joints and bushings, may also require replacement over time. The interior, while durable, can show wear and tear after years of use. Overall, the Tacoma is known for its exceptional durability if well-maintained.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Toyota Tacoma's tech features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. Standard entertainment features include a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary audio input. Higher trims may offer a touchscreen display (typically a smaller screen), Bluetooth connectivity, and a JBL sound system as optional upgrades. Navigation was also available as an option on some trims.

Driver-assistance features are limited. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), and traction control. Some models may have a backup camera, but advanced features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for specific safety performance data. The Tacoma generally performed well in frontal crash tests but may have received lower scores in side-impact tests. Check these ratings on the IIHS and NHTSA websites for the most accurate information. Overall, the 2013 Tacoma prioritizes reliability and functionality over cutting-edge technology. Its safety features are adequate for its time, but modern trucks offer significantly more advanced driver-assistance systems.

2013 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Toyota Tacoma's MSRP ranged from around $18,000 to $32,000, depending on the trim and configuration. Used market prices currently range from approximately $15,000 to $28,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Tacoma holds its value exceptionally well due to its reputation for reliability and durability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), trim level (TRD trims command higher prices), and whether it's a 4x4 model. Lower mileage and well-maintained examples fetch the highest prices.

2013 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma are typically moderate. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice and driving habits, but expect average fuel consumption. Maintenance is relatively affordable, thanks to readily available parts and a simple design. Repairs are generally infrequent, but can be more expensive if rust damage is present. Overall, the Tacoma is economical to own due to its reliability and strong resale value, offsetting slightly higher fuel costs for the V6. Long-term ownership is a strong point.

2013 Toyota Tacoma Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2013 Toyota Tacoma's key rivals include the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma generally surpasses its competitors. The Nissan Frontier is a similarly reliable but less refined option. The Colorado and Canyon offer more modern interiors and, in some cases, better fuel economy, but may not match the Tacoma's long-term durability.

In terms of features, the Tacoma lags behind some rivals, especially in base trims. The Colorado/Canyon offered more advanced technology features even back in 2013. Performance is comparable, but the Tacoma's V6 is a strong performer. Price-wise, used Tacoma prices tend to be higher due to their strong resale value.

Alternatives to the Tacoma depend on your priorities. If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Tacoma is a solid choice. If you prioritize modern features and a more comfortable ride, the Colorado/Canyon might be better options. The Frontier is a budget-friendly alternative for those seeking basic truck functionality. Consider a newer Honda Ridgeline for a more comfortable and refined ride with better fuel economy, though it sacrifices some off-road capability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Toyota Tacoma a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2013 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and durable mid-size truck with good off-road capability and excellent resale value. It's worth buying if you prioritize longevity and are willing to accept slightly outdated technology. A used 2013 Tacoma is generally a good buy, but inspect it thoroughly for rust, especially the frame. TRD trims are desirable for their enhanced off-road features and sportier appearance. Avoid overly modified trucks, as modifications can negatively impact reliability. Ensure the maintenance history is well-documented before purchasing.

2013 Quad Cab TRD sport

Truck was a champ. Mileage slightly less than advertised but still decent. Felt like sitting in a lifted car but was smooth on oilfield goat trails and held up real well saving gas compared to other full-size trucks. I think the fake hood scoop was xxxxxxxx but otherwise a great truck. 4x4 in mud snow and icy roads was excellent. Real reliable truck.

2013 Tacoma Prerunner

Overall the Tacoma is built like a TANK! I chose the 4 cyl 2.7L and it does perform amazingly well for such a large truck, I think the ride is good but of course it's a truck so it is a bit bumpy, expected because it is made to go off road when necessary. The only thing I would change on this truck is to have 4 wheel disk brakes it would change the trucks handling and feel enormously, with the disk front - drum rear in stock form the pedal feel is annoying and spongy, which makes the front end dive if you really have to haul your speed down quickly and that effects the overall handling a lot! The resale value is insane!

Transmission

I love my little truck but if I had done more research I would of past. It seams that they haven’t figured out how to fix the transmission from jerking between 2nd and 4th unless you really jump on the accelerator. The whistle around the doors was a easy fix we did ourselves. Necessary evil to have just like a telephone lol.

Overall, my 2013 Tacoma has been reliable. It is 7 years old and has 71000 miles. I have had to basically replace every major component that had to do with AC. This has been frustrating to say the least

Has been a perfect truck to own

This truck is very nimble and easy to drive. It gives great performance, while also giving excellent fuel economy. Takes up little room in the garage, but drives like a much bigger vehicle. Toyota is famous for its quality and durability. This truck is a bargain, for someone who loves to save money, but needs a truck with the ability to please.
