Rating: 4.52
Based on 55 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Toyota Tacoma marks the beginning of the second generation of this popular compact/mid-size pickup. Available in Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab body styles, its model years spanned from 2005 to 2015. Key trims included the base model, SR5, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Sport. The original MSRP ranged from around $14,000 to $28,000. The Tacoma's reputation for legendary reliability and off-road capability is a major factor in its enduring popularity.
The Good

The 2005 Tacoma boasts strong performance, especially with the V6, and is renowned for its Toyota reliability. Its rugged design and available off-road packages appeal to adventurous buyers. Practical buyers appreciate its resale value and dependable nature, while those seeking adventure love its capability. It offers a comfortable ride and decent fuel economy for a truck.

The Bad

Known weaknesses include potential rust issues, especially in regions with road salt. The rear leaf springs were subject to a recall, so check if this has been addressed. The interior plastics can feel cheap, and the four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered when loaded. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission.

What Problems Does the 2005 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Toyota Tacoma often revolve around rust, particularly in areas where road salt is used. The frame is susceptible to corrosion, and in some cases, Toyota issued recalls to address this issue, including frame replacements in severe cases. It's crucial to inspect the frame thoroughly before purchasing a used 2005 Tacoma.
Another common problem involves the rear leaf springs, which were also subject to a recall due to potential cracking or breakage. Checking if this recall service has been performed is essential.
Some owners have reported issues with the ball joints wearing prematurely, particularly on models that see frequent off-road use. Regular inspection and maintenance of the ball joints are recommended. There are also reports of valve cover gasket leaks becoming more common as the vehicle ages.
While generally reliable, the automatic transmission can sometimes exhibit shifting issues or harshness, especially in higher-mileage examples. Regular transmission fluid changes can help mitigate these problems.
Long-term reliability is generally good, but addressing these known issues proactively will help ensure the Tacoma's longevity.

How long will the 2005 Toyota Tacoma last?

With proper maintenance, a 2005 Toyota Tacoma can easily exceed 200,000 miles, and many owners report reaching 300,000 miles or more. Years of service can extend beyond 20 years with consistent care. Long-term durability is a strong point, but as mentioned earlier, rust is a significant concern, particularly in colder climates. Regular washing, waxing, and undercoating can help mitigate rust. The suspension components and bushings may also wear over time, requiring replacement. Engine and transmission longevity is generally excellent with timely maintenance.
Positive Owner Reviews
Wolfeman
I found out about the frame replacement due to holes in too late and was able to get in on it at the very end. So, mine has an upgraded commercial frame which has zero holes in it from the manufacturing process. They also did the front-end new ball joints and a bunch of other things. Was a Great deal. Now approaching 140,000 miles and still running strong. No oil leaks on the engine or transmission. Regular maintenance on it has been done to keep it in great shape!
Jo
Always wanted a Tacoma. So happy we finally got one. Comfortable and dependable. Now I understand why these are such popular trucks. Definitely love it!
Doug C
Nice used car; very clean and would note these guys take pride in their inventory; it’s definitely worth a visit if shopping for a used vehicle
Negative Owner Reviews
Underdog
Most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Kinda spendy on maintenance, but you get what you pay for. Planning on passing it down to my son.
JQA
Went to go look at this vehicle and thought, wow what a great deal! Brought it to my mechanic to find out they've spray painted all the rust and that the frame was falling apart...do your research..

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Toyota Tacoma's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic by today's standards. Standard models typically came with an AM/FM radio and a CD player. Higher trims might include an upgraded JBL audio system. Driver-assistance features were minimal, limited to anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD).
Safety features included front airbags as standard equipment. Optional safety features included side airbags on some trims. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) were available on some models, particularly the TRD trims, to enhance stability and control in challenging conditions.
Crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) varied depending on the specific test. The Tacoma generally performed well in frontal crash tests, but side-impact protection was rated lower in some tests.
Compared to modern trucks, the 2005 Tacoma lacks advanced driver-assistance systems such as lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Its technology is focused on basic functionality rather than cutting-edge innovation. The availability of features depended heavily on the trim level and optional packages selected at the time of purchase.

2005 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Toyota Tacoma ranged from approximately $14,000 for a base model to around $28,000 for a fully equipped Double Cab TRD. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $8,000 to $20,000+. The Tacoma holds its value exceptionally well due to its reputation for reliability and durability. Factors affecting resale value include rust (or lack thereof), maintenance history, trim level, and overall condition. Low-mileage examples in excellent condition command a premium price.

2005 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma are generally moderate. Fuel costs depend on the engine; the four-cylinder is more economical than the V6. Maintenance is relatively affordable due to Toyota's reliability, but repairs can be expensive if major components fail. Long-term ownership costs are generally reasonable, especially if preventative maintenance is performed. The Tacoma is considered more economical to own than many other trucks due to its reliability and strong resale value, balancing initial investment with long term spend.

2005 Toyota Tacoma Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2005 Toyota Tacoma competed with trucks like the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, and Ford Ranger. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma generally outperforms its rivals. The Nissan Frontier offers similar reliability and off-road capability but often comes at a slightly lower price point. The Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon offered comparable performance but often lacked the Tacoma's resale value and proven reliability. The Ford Ranger, while a capable truck, was generally considered less refined and less reliable than the Tacoma during that era.
In terms of features, the Tacoma was competitive but not necessarily a leader. The Colorado/Canyon sometimes offered more advanced features for the time.
For buyers prioritizing reliability and resale value, the Tacoma remains a strong choice. If budget is a primary concern, a well-maintained Nissan Frontier could be a worthwhile alternative. For those seeking more modern features, newer trucks in the same class would be a better option, though they may come with higher price tags and potentially lower long-term reliability ratings. Consider a newer generation Tacoma or a Honda Ridgeline for more features and comfort, albeit at a higher price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Toyota Tacoma a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2005 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and capable compact/mid-size truck with excellent resale value. It's a good choice for those who need a truck for light-duty work, off-roading, or as a daily driver. It's worth buying, especially if you find a well-maintained example with minimal rust. Look for TRD trims for enhanced off-road capability. Since it's only available used now, a thorough inspection for rust and prior recall work is critical. If rust is present, factor repair or avoidance into the price. Avoid heavily modified or neglected examples. A Tacoma with a documented maintenance history is a safer bet.

Longest I’ve ever owned a vehicle!!

2005 SR5 V6 4dr. The only problem I’ve ever had is the frame rusting. For some reason it doesn’t qualify for any part of the recall. Not sure why. Had plates welded on to reinforce and seems great. I’ve had it since 2007 and 22k. I now have 125k.

Most reliable vehicle ever owned.

Fun to drive with a manual transmission. Fuel efficient but very capable truck. I only wish they made these with a diesel engine. It was very capable and snow with the four-wheel drive
