2007 Toyota Tacoma Review: Great Year For The Worry-Free Small Truck

Rating: 4.48
Based on 82 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Toyota Tacoma is a mid-size pickup truck, part of the Tacoma's second generation (2005-2015). Available in Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab configurations with short or long beds, the Tacoma offers versatility. Key trims include Base, PreRunner, and TRD (Off-Road, Sport). When new, prices ranged from around $14,000 to $30,000. The Tacoma's reputation for reliability and off-road capability makes it exceptionally popular.
The Good

The 2007 Toyota Tacoma boasts legendary reliability, a key selling point for practical buyers. Performance is adequate with available V6 power for towing. Its rugged design appeals to those seeking adventure, while respectable fuel economy (for a truck) adds to its value. Emotionally, owning a Tacoma means joining a community known for durability and capability.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma include potential rust issues, particularly on the frame, especially in areas with road salt. The interior plastics can feel cheap, and the four-cylinder engine may feel underpowered for some. Watch out for differential issues in TRD models and ensure timely maintenance of the automatic transmission.

What Problems Does the 2007 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Toyota Tacoma often center around frame rust, particularly in regions where road salt is used extensively. This issue led to recalls and buybacks by Toyota in some cases. It's crucial to thoroughly inspect the frame for rust before purchasing. Other common issues include rear differential problems, especially in TRD models, where the locking differential can malfunction. The leaf springs are also prone to sagging or breaking over time, particularly if the truck is frequently used for hauling or off-roading. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including hard shifting or slipping, often linked to infrequent fluid changes. Premature ball joint wear can also occur. Although the 2007 model year is generally reliable, these potential issues warrant careful inspection and maintenance. Several recalls related to the leaf springs and fuel pipe corrosion have been issued; verify that any potential purchase has had these recalls addressed by a Toyota dealer. Addressing these issues promptly can help maintain the Tacoma's long-term reliability.

How long will the 2007 Toyota Tacoma last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Toyota Tacoma can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide well over 15 years of service. Many owners report reaching 300,000 miles or more. The key to longevity is consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing rust prevention. Weaknesses that emerge over time include suspension component wear (shocks, struts, ball joints), potential for increased oil consumption as piston rings age, and rust perforation if not proactively managed. Regular inspection is key.

Very reliable, but reliability isn't everything. Buy a Toyota and you won't spend money on fixing it, but you'll pay more to own it... forever! Lol If your going to drop big money on a Toyota make sure it has all the bells and whistles of a comfortable BA truck made in America. Otherwise, reliability means your stuck with the truck none of your friends want to drive.

i thought this truck was really tuff but it is wimmper then my Toyota Matrix. one time i was carrying i don't no maybe 20 ponds of supplies in the truck and i couldn't hold i if you no what i mean. then a carried 35 pounds of supplies in the truck and it stoped and i told the dealer my proplem. he said that my truck was some how defected. i was so mad at that point and they wouldn't give any offer. and the dealer ship said ii can buy another 1 but they were going to give me it at full price. so i turned down the offer and got a Ford f350 and that is a man truck no more Toyota cars trucks are minvans for me i'm sticking with Ford

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Toyota Tacoma's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic by today's standards. Standard features typically include an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might offer an upgraded JBL sound system or satellite radio capability as an optional feature. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available on this model year. Safety features include standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Side airbags and stability control (Vehicle Stability Control - VSC) were available as optional features or on higher trims.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary depending on the cab configuration. The Double Cab received good ratings in frontal offset crash tests and side impact tests, while the Access Cab had lower ratings in some areas. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings also vary, with generally positive results, but with some concerns about rollover resistance, particularly for 2WD models. It is important to check the specific crash test ratings for the specific cab configuration being considered. Optional features also included fog lamps and remote keyless entry, adding to the convenience of the vehicle. Overall, the 2007 Tacoma prioritizes reliability and durability over cutting-edge technology.

2007 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Toyota Tacoma ranged from approximately $14,000 for a base Regular Cab model to around $30,000 for a fully equipped Double Cab TRD. Used market prices in 2024 typically range from $8,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Tacomas hold their value exceptionally well due to their renowned reliability and durability. Factors affecting resale value include frame rust (severely decreases value), overall condition, mileage, trim level (TRD models command higher prices), and location (demand varies by region). Low mileage examples in excellent condition fetch a premium.

2007 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Toyota Tacoma is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice; the four-cylinder is more fuel-efficient than the V6. Maintenance is relatively straightforward and affordable. Repair costs can be higher than some competitors due to the price of Toyota parts, but the vehicle's reliability minimizes the frequency of repairs. Long-term, rust prevention is key to avoiding costly repairs. Overall, it is considered a cost-effective vehicle.

2007 Toyota Tacoma Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Toyota Tacoma is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

Key rivals to the 2007 Toyota Tacoma include the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma generally surpasses its rivals, particularly the Colorado/Canyon twins, which have historically had more reported issues. The Nissan Frontier offers similar reliability but lacks the Tacoma's off-road prowess in TRD trims and can feel dated. Performance-wise, the Tacoma's V6 is competitive, although the Colorado/Canyon might offer slightly more power in certain configurations. Feature content is similar across the class, with the Tacoma not necessarily standing out. Price-wise, used Tacomas often command a premium due to their reputation.

Alternatives to the Tacoma depend on priorities. If budget is a primary concern, a well-maintained Nissan Frontier can be a good option. For those prioritizing ride comfort and interior refinement, the Honda Ridgeline (though technically a different class) might be considered, but it lacks the Tacoma's off-road capability and ruggedness. The Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon offer more modern features in later model years, but reliability can be a concern. The Tacoma remains a strong choice for those prioritizing reliability and resale value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Toyota Tacoma a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2007 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and durable mid-size truck with good resale value. It's worth buying, *if* a thorough inspection reveals minimal rust and the truck has been well-maintained. Used models are the only option, and TRD trims are desirable for off-road enthusiasts. A V6 engine is preferable for those who need to tow or haul regularly. Avoid examples with excessive rust or signs of neglect. If prioritizing reliability and durability, the 2007 Tacoma is a solid choice.

Love this Taco !

Purchased used w/190K Mi. 2 years ago. Bautiful Blue Mildly lifted 2007 SR5 TRD V6 crew cab that came with much needed chrome step rails, Brushguards, DUAL entertainment system, Bedliner w/ 110 VAC outlet & fog lights. It was well taken care of except for the clear coat . It's really bad on the top and the faux hood scoop, but my neighbors 2008 is much worse, the top and hood coating on his are both gone. This is a surprisingly comfortable ride compared to our 98 Explorer. It drove like a truck, but this drives more like an old Caddy, no joke, it is remarkably comfortable for a Pickup Truck. This is our 3rd Toyota, first was a new Camry that ran for 8 years without a single problem., same with a Highlander. I am amazed this vehicle does not leak a drop of synthetic oil ! This truck may just outlive me! I would highly recommend Toyota, it seems to me they are the Car Co. when it comes to striving to be the best.

This truck has been absolutely wonderful. Plenty of power, plenty of room, and very reliable! It looks like a 4 wheel drive even though it's a rear wheel drive vehicle. Can't say enough good things about this truck!
