Rating: 4.46
Based on 100 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is a mid-size pickup truck representing the third generation of the Tacoma, which debuted in 1995. Available in Access Cab and Double Cab body styles, the 2016 model year was a significant redesign. Key trims include the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. The original pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $38,000. Its reputation for reliability, off-road capability, and strong resale value makes it perennially popular.
The Good

The 2016 Tacoma boasts strong off-road performance thanks to the TRD trims. Its legendary reliability offers peace of mind. The redesigned interior provides more comfort. The rugged design appeals emotionally, while its strong resale value and decent fuel efficiency (for a truck) make it a practical choice.

The Bad

Some owners report a stiff ride, especially on non-TRD models. The automatic transmission can sometimes feel hesitant in certain driving situations. The rear drum brakes (on some trims) are considered less effective than disc brakes. The turning radius can be wide, making it less maneuverable in tight spaces.

What Problems Does the 2016 Toyota Tacoma Have?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma, being the first year of a new generation, experienced some common issues. One frequently reported problem is related to the third brake light leaking, potentially causing water damage inside the cab. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, specifically feeling hesitant or "gear hunting" at highway speeds. There have also been reports of differential whine or vibration, particularly in 4WD models. Early 2016 models had a recall for rear differential carrier assembly bolts that could loosen and potentially cause loss of control.

Long-term reliability is generally good, but potential buyers should inspect for rust, especially in areas with road salt. The leaf springs can sometimes sag over time, affecting ride height and towing capacity. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating potential problems and ensuring long-term durability. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended.

How long will the 2016 Toyota Tacoma last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Toyota Tacoma can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of service. Toyota Tacomas, in general, are known for their longevity. However, factors like driving habits (off-roading vs. highway driving) and adherence to maintenance schedules significantly impact their lifespan.

Long-term durability concerns often revolve around rust prevention, particularly in regions with harsh winters. Inspecting and treating rust is essential. Weaknesses can emerge in the suspension components, especially the leaf springs, which may require replacement after extensive use. Regular fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly contribute to a longer lifespan.

We are really excited about this vehicle for our son that is just turning 16 this month. He did the research and we eventually made a purchase through Walser Toyota and their sales rep Richard Eaton. The vehicle has top inspection rating and is in excellent condition. Absolutely drives like an off road should and the safety features are great for peace of mind.

Even my mom got in my Tacoma and said "wow, for a Truck this drive very smooth." She handles everything I can throw at her.

Great performance and very easy to keep up with...love it! Easy to clean and easy to learn to use...the color added a great way to make it look great.
Negative Owner Reviews
Toyota junk
Just vehicles. Cheaply made. Do a search and see form yourself. Try kia... they make great vehicles. Cars are nice and tight with no issues . Toyotas squeak and rattle. Wind noise coming through door seals.. you name it. Poor quality!!!

I owned a 2016 TRD Sport for two years. I wanted to love this truck but it is grossly underpowered. Ended up trading it in for the F150 3.5L V6 Turbo and couldn’t be happier. Toyota is behind the times in engine tech. I can’t imagine how frustrated people are that put on aftermarket tires and lifts. I bet they are getting sub 15mpg and crawling up hills.
Queriss
This not a work truck. This is a luxury vehicle for a family that owns a condo in Tahoe. It is made of plastic and fiberglass. The interior is luxurious so is great for the commute. Very comfortable. Has all the bells and whistles. But this truck can't do any work. The engine and body is total crap. Mileage is not that much better than my 2008 Tundra. I get about 14MPG. Too bad.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma features a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard on most trims is the Entune infotainment system with a touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Higher trims offer features such as navigation, smartphone integration (though not always seamless), and a premium JBL audio system. Driver-assistance features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles, with options like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert available on some trims.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features vary by trim and package.

Crash-test ratings from IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for specific performance, but generally, the 2016 Tacoma performed well in crash tests, although small overlap front crash tests showed some areas for improvement depending on the configuration.

2016 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma had a starting MSRP of around $23,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $38,000 when new. As of today, used market prices generally range from $20,000 to $35,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Tacoma holds its value exceptionally well, resulting in lower depreciation compared to many other vehicles. Factors influencing resale value include the trim level (TRD models command higher prices), 4WD configuration, overall condition, and mileage. Well-maintained examples with low mileage are highly sought after.

2016 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2016 Toyota Tacoma are typically moderate, depending on the driver's record and coverage options. Fuel costs are average for a mid-size truck. Maintenance is generally affordable due to Toyota's reliability, but some repairs can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs are reasonable, considering the Tacoma's durability and strong resale value. While not the most economical vehicle overall, its reliability helps to keep costs manageable over time.

2016 Toyota Tacoma Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Toyota Tacoma is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Pickup Truck?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma competes with the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Nissan Frontier. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma generally surpasses its rivals, but the Colorado and Canyon offer more refined on-road handling. The Frontier is a more budget-friendly option but lacks the Tacoma's features and resale value. The Tacoma's off-road performance (TRD trims) is a strong selling point, often exceeding the capabilities of the Colorado/Canyon's Z71 package. In terms of price, the Tacoma tends to hold its value better, making it a potentially more cost-effective long-term purchase despite a higher initial price.

A similar alternative would be the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, particularly if on-road comfort is a priority. The Honda Ridgeline offers a more car-like driving experience and unique features like a bed trunk, but it's less capable off-road. The Nissan Frontier is a viable option for those on a budget, but it's an older design. Ultimately, the Tacoma's blend of reliability, off-road capability, and resale value makes it a compelling choice for many buyers.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Pickup Truck?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable, capable mid-size truck with excellent resale value, especially those who prioritize off-road performance. It's worth buying used, provided a thorough inspection is conducted, and maintenance records are available. The TRD Off-Road or TRD Sport trims are recommended for their enhanced features and capabilities. Avoid modified vehicles unless you're confident in the quality of the modifications. If on-road comfort is paramount, alternatives like the Colorado/Canyon might be more suitable. Overall, the 2016 Tacoma is a solid choice for those who value durability and off-road prowess.

Toypta Tacoma

This vehicle seems to be an outstanding vehicle for its class. The only reason that I'm not giving it five stars for comfort is that it rides like a truck -- which is what its supposed to be, but quite comfortable for a truck. The other four star rating I gave it was because it was not available with a manual transmission. Again, it's a truck, not a car and trucks, as working vehicles should be available with a manual transmission -- but people today don't want to actually have to DRIVE a vehicl.

Transmission and plastic trim problems

Shifts hard, lurches, not very enjoyable. The plastic trim around the mirrors and the front cowl have melted due to the heat from the sun. I have the only melting truck in the neighborhood.

Best resale value vehicle ever owned

I bought this truck new after major styling change in Tacomas and traded in a 2008 Tacoma SR 5 and getting back 88% of what I paid for new in 2008. I've had no problems with this 2016 so far and never did with 2008 except fir window washer issue.

My second Toyota truck.

300,000 miles on my last Toyota truck so I purchased again. This is a very nice truck so far. Wish the seats were a little more stain proof. But the air conditioner is great, ha ha. It has a nice interior over all. It’s very roomy. The gas mileage is very good.

Has flaws from the factory

Love my tacoma. Has flaws. Tranny slips on down shift. From the factory. Tailgate EZ assist last a year if used. Tailgate bushing same. Wear out fast. Not cheap to replace. Frame rust. Again flaws. Toyota will not help customer to address issues. Dealer says trade.

Most dependable brand of vehicles on the road.

Very comfortable and dependable, easy to maintain. Really great gas milage for an off-road truck. Always complimented by other motorists. Big enough to get you wherever you want to go, small enough to park at the mall.

Love it!

Enough legroom, but not as tall as a full size truck. Drives and rides like an SUV. This is perfect for the person who likes the convenience of a truck, but not the low gas mileage or higher price of a full size. Nice features and fairly comfortable. Very happy with it.
