2012 Toyota Tacoma Review: Refreshed Compact Truck That Outlasts The Competition

Rating: 4.48
Based on 89 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is a compact/mid-size pickup truck known for its reliability and off-road capability. Part of the second generation (2005-2015), it comes in various body styles: Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab. Key trims include the base model, SR5, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Sport. New, the 2012 Tacoma ranged from around $17,000 to $30,000. Its reputation for durability and strong resale value are major draws.
The Good

The 2012 Tacoma offers legendary Toyota reliability, a rugged design that appeals to off-road enthusiasts (emotional), and strong resale value (practical). Performance is adequate with the available engines, and while not the most luxurious, it is dependable. Good for work or play, the Tacoma holds its value well.

The Bad

The 2012 Tacoma's weaknesses include a somewhat cramped interior, especially in the Access Cab. The four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered when loaded. Rust, particularly on the frame, is a concern in regions with road salt. Additionally, the ride quality can be stiff, especially on the TRD trims. Check for proper maintenance history.

What Problems Does the 2012 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Toyota Tacoma center around a few key areas. Rust, particularly frame rust, remains a significant concern, especially in areas where road salt is used. Thoroughly inspect the frame for rust, especially near the rear leaf spring mounts and around any welded seams.

Another common issue is the potential for premature wear of the leaf springs, leading to sagging or even breakage. Listen for unusual noises coming from the rear suspension. While Toyota has issued recalls for leaf springs in some older Tacomas, it's still a good idea to inspect them.

Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failure. Additionally, check the condition of the ball joints and other suspension components, as these can wear out over time.

Earlier model years in the second generation (2005-2008) had some issues with the lower ball joints, leading to recalls. While the 2012 model is less prone to this issue, it's still prudent to have them inspected. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial for long-term reliability. Check the vehicle's service history to ensure it has been properly maintained.

How long will the 2012 Toyota Tacoma last?

With good maintenance, a 2012 Toyota Tacoma can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing over 15 years of service. Toyotas, in general, are renowned for their longevity, and the Tacoma is no exception. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items are essential. The frame rust issue is a major long-term concern. Neglecting rust prevention can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. The engines themselves are generally robust.

This car is infuriating with its bumpy ryde and cheap interior under powered engine Poor handling the brakes are not getting the job done needs to go back to engineering

We'd always hesitated about even looking at a foreign- made car or truck. When it came time for a new truck we changed our minds and began looking at all brands. Are we glad we did! We love the Tacoma. Rides like a luxury car, handles like a dream. All the comforts of a large, luxury car. Mileage is good for a truck. We drive on gravel every day and appreciate its handling. We chose the TRD short box. Love the styling, too.

this isn't a real truck this is a waste of money. the reasson why you dont see them on the road as much as other cars is because they break down

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma's built-in tech is relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard features include a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary audio input. Higher trims might offer an upgraded JBL audio system and Bluetooth connectivity (optional).

Driver-assistance features are limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), and traction control (TRAC) are standard. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning.

Safety features include front airbags and side-curtain airbags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2012 Tacoma Access Cab a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap front crash test. The Double Cab also received "Good" ratings in several categories. However, it received a "Marginal" rating in the small overlap front test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Tacoma varying star ratings depending on the cab configuration. It is important to check specific crash test data based on the cab style being considered.

Optional features included things like keyless entry, power windows and locks, and cruise control. The TRD models had specialized off-road features like a locking rear differential and Bilstein shocks.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Toyota Tacoma ranged from approximately $17,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim and configuration. Used market prices vary considerably based on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $15,000 to $25,000. Tacomas are known for excellent resale value due to their reliability and reputation. Factors affecting resale include rust (significant negative impact), mileage (lower is better), maintenance history (well-maintained commands a premium), and trim level (TRD models hold their value exceptionally well). Depreciation is slow compared to other trucks.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent but not exceptional, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance is relatively affordable due to Toyota's reliability and readily available parts. Repairs are also generally less frequent and less expensive compared to some other brands. While initial purchase price may be higher, the low long-term ownership costs and high resale value make it a cost-effective choice.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Toyota Tacoma is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma competes with trucks like the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma typically outperforms its rivals. The Nissan Frontier offers a similar ruggedness and lower price point, but lacks the Tacoma's strong resale value. The Colorado/Canyon twins offer more modern interiors and, in some cases, better fuel economy, but their reliability record isn't as stellar as the Tacoma's.

Feature-wise, the Tacoma is often behind its competitors, particularly in terms of technology. Its interior can feel dated compared to the Colorado/Canyon. Performance is adequate, but not class-leading. The V6 provides sufficient power for most tasks.

If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Tacoma is a top choice. If you prioritize a more modern interior and better fuel economy, the Colorado/Canyon might be worth considering. The Frontier offers a budget-friendly alternative, but with compromises in features and refinement. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities. If off-roading is a key consideration, the TRD Off-Road Tacoma is difficult to beat. The Honda Ridgeline, although different in design (unibody), can also be a more comfortable alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Toyota Tacoma a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for individuals seeking a reliable and durable pickup truck, particularly those who prioritize off-road capability and strong resale value. It's a solid choice for those who need a truck for work or recreation. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained Tacoma with minimal rust is a worthwhile investment. TRD Off-Road models are particularly desirable for off-road enthusiasts. Used is the only option given the year, and pre-purchase inspection for rust and overall condition is paramount. Be willing to pay a slight premium for a clean, well-maintained example.

best compact truck for money

The Toyota tacoma is the perfect vehicle for my area. Being in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania the tacoma handles every season with ease, being a great winter vehicle as well as a great truck for summer trips to the beach and family road trips.

fantastic truck

This truck has a very well deserved reputation for being "bullet proof" and mine is no exception. I like everything except the gas mileage (17mpg) which I think could be better even with the 6 cylinder engine. Im hoping it lasts forever because I am not eager to go through the purchase process again.
