The Good
The 2012 Tacoma offers legendary Toyota reliability, a rugged design that appeals to off-road enthusiasts (emotional), and strong resale value (practical). Performance is adequate with the available engines, and while not the most luxurious, it is dependable. Good for work or play, the Tacoma holds its value well.
The Bad
The 2012 Tacoma's weaknesses include a somewhat cramped interior, especially in the Access Cab. The four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered when loaded. Rust, particularly on the frame, is a concern in regions with road salt. Additionally, the ride quality can be stiff, especially on the TRD trims. Check for proper maintenance history.

What Problems Does the 2012 Toyota Tacoma Have?
Another common issue is the potential for premature wear of the leaf springs, leading to sagging or even breakage. Listen for unusual noises coming from the rear suspension. While Toyota has issued recalls for leaf springs in some older Tacomas, it's still a good idea to inspect them.
Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failure. Additionally, check the condition of the ball joints and other suspension components, as these can wear out over time.
Earlier model years in the second generation (2005-2008) had some issues with the lower ball joints, leading to recalls. While the 2012 model is less prone to this issue, it's still prudent to have them inspected. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial for long-term reliability. Check the vehicle's service history to ensure it has been properly maintained.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), and traction control (TRAC) are standard. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning.
Safety features include front airbags and side-curtain airbags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2012 Tacoma Access Cab a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap front crash test. The Double Cab also received "Good" ratings in several categories. However, it received a "Marginal" rating in the small overlap front test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Tacoma varying star ratings depending on the cab configuration. It is important to check specific crash test data based on the cab style being considered.
Optional features included things like keyless entry, power windows and locks, and cruise control. The TRD models had specialized off-road features like a locking rear differential and Bilstein shocks.

How Does the 2012 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?
Feature-wise, the Tacoma is often behind its competitors, particularly in terms of technology. Its interior can feel dated compared to the Colorado/Canyon. Performance is adequate, but not class-leading. The V6 provides sufficient power for most tasks.
If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Tacoma is a top choice. If you prioritize a more modern interior and better fuel economy, the Colorado/Canyon might be worth considering. The Frontier offers a budget-friendly alternative, but with compromises in features and refinement. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities. If off-roading is a key consideration, the TRD Off-Road Tacoma is difficult to beat. The Honda Ridgeline, although different in design (unibody), can also be a more comfortable alternative.

best compact truck for moneyThe Toyota tacoma is the perfect vehicle for my area. Being in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania the tacoma handles every season with ease, being a great winter vehicle as well as a great truck for summer trips to the beach and family road trips.

Dream Truck! Its been less than a week since I've financed but this truck gets better by the day, from capabilities to accessories you can't go wrong. If you need some help at ROSEVILLE TOYOTA, ask for Anthony!

fantastic truckThis truck has a very well deserved reputation for being "bullet proof" and mine is no exception. I like everything except the gas mileage (17mpg) which I think could be better even with the 6 cylinder engine. Im hoping it lasts forever because I am not eager to go through the purchase process again.

MisterThis vehicle is what I wanted. To carry our Kyaks for summer fun. Also for picking material to fix up my house. This is the second Toyota that I have owned.
