Rating: 4.64
Based on 100 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Toyota Tacoma is a compact/mid-size pickup truck, part of the second generation (2005-2015). Available in Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab body styles, it offered trims like the base, PreRunner, and TRD. Its popularity stems from Toyota's reputation for reliability and durability, making it a favorite for off-roading and work. Pricing ranged from around $18,000 to $32,000 when new. It stands out due to its strong resale value and proven off-road capabilities.
The Good

The 2014 Tacoma boasts legendary Toyota reliability and strong off-road performance, appealing to practical buyers seeking dependability. Its rugged design and available TRD packages cater to emotional buyers desiring adventure. It offers decent value retention and a comfortable ride for daily use, albeit not class-leading in fuel efficiency.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2014 Tacoma include a somewhat dated interior, average fuel economy, and potential rust issues, particularly in regions with road salt. The rear drum brakes can be prone to corrosion. The four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered for some drivers, especially when hauling or towing. Pre-purchase inspection for frame rust is crucial.

What Problems Does the 2014 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Toyota Tacoma, and earlier model years of the second generation, often revolve around frame rust, especially in areas where road salt is used. Toyota issued recalls for frame rust in certain regions, and it's essential to check if a specific vehicle has had this recall service performed. Other common issues include: leaf spring problems (leading to sagging or breakage), rear differential leaks, and occasional issues with the electronic stability control system. Some owners have reported premature wear of the lower ball joints. While the Tacoma is generally reliable, the V6 engine can sometimes experience oil leaks, and the automatic transmission may exhibit shift flares. Long-term reliability concerns center on preventative maintenance being performed regularly and addressing rust promptly to prevent significant structural damage. The 2014 model year doesn't have any significantly different issues from other years in the 2nd generation, but checking service history and a thorough inspection is essential for any used Tacoma.

How long will the 2014 Toyota Tacoma last?

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma, with proper maintenance, can easily exceed 200,000 miles and 15-20 years of service. Many owners report reaching 300,000 miles and beyond. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing any rust promptly. Weaknesses over time primarily involve rust, suspension component wear (shocks, ball joints), and potential engine/transmission issues if neglected. The Tacoma's durable engine and transmission, when well-maintained, contribute significantly to its lasting appeal and high mileage capabilities. Proper care is critical for preventing major problems.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma's tech and safety features are relatively basic compared to newer trucks. Standard features include a basic audio system with AM/FM radio, CD player, and auxiliary input. Higher trims may offer a touchscreen display with navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. Driver-assistance features are limited, primarily consisting of anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control.

Safety features include front airbags, side curtain airbags, and tire pressure monitoring system. Optional features included a backup camera on some trims. Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) show mixed results. While the Tacoma performed reasonably well in some tests, it received marginal scores in others, particularly for small overlap frontal crash protection.

Overall, the 2014 Tacoma prioritizes functionality and reliability over advanced technology and driver-assistance systems. The available features are adequate for daily use but lack the sophistication found in more modern vehicles. The safety ratings are acceptable but not class-leading.

2014 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Toyota Tacoma ranged from approximately $18,000 to $32,000 depending on the trim and configuration. Currently, used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $28,000, reflecting the Tacoma's excellent resale value. The Tacoma depreciates very slowly due to its reputation for reliability and durability, especially in 4x4 configurations. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and geographic location (demand in certain areas). Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command premium prices.

2014 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma is generally considered economical to own long-term. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is average for its class. Maintenance costs are relatively low due to Toyota's reliability. While repairs can be more expensive than some domestic trucks, they are infrequent. However, rust repair can be a significant expense in certain regions. Overall, the Tacoma offers a balance of affordability and dependability, making it a cost-effective choice for many owners. The long term durability outweighs the higher repair costs should they occur.

2014 Toyota Tacoma Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Toyota Tacoma is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma competes with the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma consistently outperforms its rivals. The Nissan Frontier offers a similar ruggedness and lower price point but lacks the Tacoma's resale value and refinement. The Colorado and Canyon provide more modern interiors and better fuel economy in some configurations but historically lag behind the Tacoma in long-term reliability. The Tacoma's off-road performance, especially in TRD trims, is superior to most of its competitors. Feature-wise, the Tacoma is less advanced compared to the Colorado/Canyon, particularly in infotainment.

For those prioritizing reliability and off-road capability above all else, the Tacoma is the clear winner. If a more modern interior and better fuel economy are desired, the Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon are viable alternatives, but with a potential trade-off in long-term dependability. The Nissan Frontier presents a budget-friendly option, though its aging design is a significant drawback. A similar alternative focused on reliability would be a slightly newer model year Tacoma (2016+) if budget allows for improved features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Toyota Tacoma a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and durable mid-size truck with strong off-road capabilities. It's worth buying as a used vehicle, especially if you prioritize dependability and resale value over modern features. Look for well-maintained examples with documented service history and, crucially, inspect for frame rust. TRD trims are recommended for off-road enthusiasts. If you need a basic, dependable truck that will last, the 2014 Tacoma is an excellent choice, provided you carefully assess its condition. Avoid examples with excessive rust or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection is a must.

Purchased this truck new ten years ago, four door, six

Purchased this truck new ten years ago, four door, six foot bed, towing package- fuel mileage is not the best (16mpg avg) due to the towing gear ratio, however I tow a lot of boats up to 22 feet and have never had a problem. Currently have 80,000 miles with only routine manufacturer recommended maintenance. Only negative, my wife finds the truck too long (19 feet) for the mall parking spaces.

Great Truck?? With Needs!!

Overall the 2014 Tacoma 4.0L DBL Cab Long bed is a great vehicle. However, the suspension (shocks) should have been more heavy duty. Also, the AC system doesn't seem to be adequate for the vehicle. Perhaps a larger capacity system should be considered.

After 9 years of owning my 2014 Tacoma

First new vehicle I've ever bought, and 47,500 miles and 9 years into owning it I've had an offer to sell my 4wd Base model for a higher price than I paid for it. It's had zero issues and rides like a Cadillac compared to my 1994. It gets 22mpg, but I wish it was lighter and smaller and got 30 mpg, but Americans demand bigger and better ride when it's real intent should be an economy truck not a midsize truck that is as heavy older full size trucks. Bench seat doesn't give enough room for passengers knees if the passenger is as tall as the driver. It handles and drives great, and 4wd works great, and so far retained 102% of its resale value, how could I say anything bad about it.

Reliable Toyota Tacoma doesn’t disappoint

I have had this truck for over 8 years now with over 115,000 miles. It has be perfect mechanically. The only things done to my truck other than routing oil changes has been tires, brakes, spark plug change and battery replacement. It gets 23-25 mpg with the v-6. Paint and finish is superb as the truck still looks and drives like new. No wonder everyone says you can’t beat a Toyota. The Chevy Silverado that I had lost an engine twice in the first 100,000 miles. I am hooked on Toyota now. Just wish they had real steel chrome bumpers on the new models.

Most reliable vehicle I owned. Holds value

Everything was perfect for my needs. No bells or whistles..just a good simple vehicle for work. Great on gas mileage. Manual transmission, went in to 4or a little sluggish but did the job. I worked in hospice and this vehicle took me where I needed to be..no matter the terrain or road conditions.

Reliable and comfortable

This is a reliable truck. If I had to buy it again I would have gotten the larger 6 cylinder engine. The 4 cylinder is underpowered resulting in very non responsive acceleration. Also the difference in mileage between the 4 and 6 cylinder is insignificant. But otherwise can’t complain. It drives well, so far It’s proven to be very reliable transportation and it is a comfortable ride for a truck.
