Rating: 4.27

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma is a mid-size pickup truck known for its reliability and off-road capability. Part of the second generation (2005-2015), it came in Regular, Access, and Double Cab body styles. Key trims included the base, PreRunner, and TRD Off-Road. New, it ranged from approximately $15,000 to $30,000. Its reputation for durability and strong resale value contribute to its enduring popularity.
The Good

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma boasts legendary reliability and strong off-road performance (TRD models). It offers practical functionality with a versatile bed and good towing capacity. Emotionally, owners appreciate its rugged design and the sense of adventure it provides. Its long-term value and resale are also major selling points, appealing to budget-conscious buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Tacoma include a relatively cramped rear seat in Access Cab models. Some owners have reported frame rust issues, especially in colder climates where road salt is used. The interior materials can feel basic. Gas mileage, while decent, isn't class-leading. It's crucial to inspect the frame thoroughly for corrosion before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2009 Toyota Tacoma Have?

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma, while generally reliable, has some reported problems. A significant concern is frame rust, especially in regions that use road salt. This issue led to recalls and buybacks in earlier Tacoma model years, and while Toyota addressed it, the potential for rust remains a concern for older vehicles. Regular undercarriage washing and rustproofing are recommended.

Another common issue involves the leaf springs, which can crack or break, particularly under heavy loads or off-road use. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failure. While not as widespread, problems with the electronic throttle control system have also been noted.

Recalls for the 2009 Tacoma primarily related to potential issues with the accelerator pedal and floor mat interference, as part of larger Toyota recalls during that period. Potential buyers should check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability is generally good, but preventative maintenance, especially regarding rust prevention, is crucial to avoid costly repairs.

How long will the 2009 Toyota Tacoma last?

With regular maintenance, a 2009 Toyota Tacoma can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide well over 15 years of service. Proper oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items are essential. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses include potential rust issues (especially frame and suspension components) and wear and tear on suspension parts like ball joints and shocks. Models used extensively for off-roading or towing may experience more wear. The V6 engine is known for its longevity if properly maintained.

This is a pretty rare model 2009 Tacoma TRD off-road edition. I’ve done a lot of suspension upgrades like Fox coffee livers with remote reservoir and adjustable dampening. 33x12.50x18 tires on Black Diamond warlord wheels. 261,000 miles and drives like it was 26,000 miles. Never broke down, never gave up. I did upgrade to an optima blue top battery. JBL speakers are good, pioneers dual din Navi and apple car play. Feels like a 2020 truck but over a decade old. I’ve had over a dozen Toyota’s all from 1982 and up. They are the best vehicles on the planet.

the truck is great, however, toyota should listen more to its customers. The radio is the worst I have ever had in a vehicle. There are many complaints about the intermediate steering shaft and toyota has refused to do a recall or take any responsibility. Finally for 2020 power seats have been added. Also, I hate the 5ft bed, the removal of one of the storage areas in the bed of the truck, and please return the center storage on the back seat of the access cab. In fact and more storage. Women like trucks also, so PEASE get our opinion.

Well its so nice i love it Need more color more choices for customers and design more option as 4 door .... Or 4 wheels and 4 wheel drive ....

I recently borrowed the dealer's new Tacoma 4-cylinder while my old 6-cylinder pickup was getting a regular servicing. Given a choice between the two, I'd stick with the old truck. The difference in power and ease of driving was noticeable.
sad toyota owner
I also own a 2009 Superwhite which sits most of the time in the garage just under 16,000 miles on it. The rust is everywhere and getting worse. This is a greedy approach to manufacturing as my Prius much older has no rust. Don't buy!!!

2009 Tacoma 4X4 - This truck is average at best in comfort. The worst part is the cost, way over-priced.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma's technology is relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. Standard features typically include an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might offer an upgraded JBL audio system with satellite radio capability. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.

Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and vehicle stability control (VSC). Side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags were optional on some trims.

Optional features vary by trim level but can include power windows and locks, keyless entry, cruise control, and a rearview mirror with an integrated backup camera (available on some models). The TRD Off-Road trim includes features like a locking rear differential for enhanced off-road capability. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA are generally good for the 2009 Tacoma, offering decent protection in frontal and side-impact collisions. However, it's important to remember that safety standards have evolved since 2009.

2009 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Toyota Tacoma ranged from approximately $15,000 for a base model to around $30,000 for a fully-equipped TRD Off-Road or Limited trim. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and location, but generally range from $8,000 to $20,000. Tacomas hold their value exceptionally well, meaning depreciation is slower compared to other trucks. Factors affecting resale value include low mileage, excellent condition, a clean title, and desirable options like the V6 engine, 4WD, and TRD packages. Frame rust significantly lowers resale value.

2009 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs depend on engine choice and driving habits, but are reasonable for a mid-size truck. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with readily available parts and a reputation for reliability. Repairs are usually straightforward and affordable. While the initial purchase price might be higher than some competitors due to its strong resale value, the Tacoma's lower long-term running costs make it a cost-effective choice overall.

How Does the 2009 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma competed with the Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado. Compared to the Frontier, the Tacoma offered a slightly better reputation for reliability and stronger resale value, although the Frontier could be found for less money on the used market. The Ford Ranger, at that time, was nearing the end of its production run and lacked the Tacoma's refinement and features. The Chevrolet Colorado offered a similar blend of practicality and affordability, but generally didn't match the Tacoma's resale value or off-road prowess (specifically the TRD models).

In terms of performance, the Tacoma's V6 engine was competitive, offering adequate power for towing and hauling. Feature-wise, the Tacoma was generally comparable to its rivals, although some competitors might have offered more advanced technology at a lower price point.

Alternatives to the 2009 Tacoma include a newer model Tacoma for improved features and safety, or a Nissan Frontier if budget is a primary concern. If off-road capability isn't a priority, a well-maintained Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon could be considered. However, for overall reliability, resale value, and a proven track record, the Tacoma remains a strong choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Toyota Tacoma a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and durable mid-size truck, particularly those who value off-road capability and strong resale value. It's worth buying if a thorough inspection reveals no significant frame rust or other major issues. A used 2009 Tacoma offers a good balance of affordability and proven reliability. The TRD Off-Road trim is recommended for serious off-road enthusiasts, while the V6 engine provides sufficient power for towing and hauling. Prioritize models with a well-documented maintenance history and evidence of rust prevention measures. Be prepared to pay a premium compared to other trucks in its class due to its strong reputation.

Most reliable Truck or Car I've owned

This Tacoma X-Runner meets all my needs. Fairly easy to park compared to full size Trucks. Good performance but needs several upgrades to meet Today's standards. Like: Cold-Air Intake, Headers. Better Brakes Upgrades, 1" Lowered Suspension, TRD Quick Shifter, Energy Suspension Sway Bar Bushings - (front and rear), Wider Wheels & Tires, URD"s Mas Air Calibrator( for better air/fuel ratio), Leather Seat Covers. After that you have a Great Truck. This is the Upgrades I have done and really have a better all around Toyota Tacoma X-Runner.

I have had Toyota trucks and sedans and they last

The stupid hod scoop has no function but it creates more wind resistance and use more gas. The truck is nice, but I wanted a new Stock 4x4 with a 6 foot bed. But precision Toyota or any other dealer do not sell you what you want to buy, but brings the most revenue, while unscrupoiusly screwing the customers.

Dependable.

Dependable. Extra space in cab and bed is a plus. Attractive pickup. Tow package and 4-wheel drive are nice to have if you are a sports person i.e., hunting, fishing, camping.

Good Value for a Used Truck

The truck meets my needs for basic transportation to work and to big box stores for construction materials. Only downside so far is a little tire noise above 45 mph. Truck looks and rides great for a ten year old vehicle

Great truck, very reliable good gas mileage. I have owned several over the years, the 4 cylinder manual transmission 4x4 will go over 300,000 miles if well taken care of.
