2011 Toyota Tacoma Review: Expensive But Reliable Small Off-Road Truck

Rating: 4.50
Based on 77 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2011 Toyota Tacoma is a compact/mid-size pickup truck known for its reliability and off-road capability. Part of the second generation (2005-2015), it's available in Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab configurations. Key trims include the base model, SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road. Pricing ranges from around $15,000 to $25,000 depending on condition and mileage. Its reputation for durability and strong resale value make it popular.
The Good

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma offers excellent reliability and strong off-road performance (TRD trims). Practical buyers appreciate its durability and resale value. Emotionally, the Tacoma provides a sense of adventure and dependability. While not the most luxurious, it's a capable and trustworthy truck for work or play. It is known to hold its value very well.

The Bad

Some owners have reported rust issues, especially in areas with road salt. The interior can feel dated and lacks some modern amenities. The four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered when towing or hauling heavy loads. Pre-2009 models had potential frame rust issues, so inspect thoroughly. Also, check for differential leaks.

What Problems Does the 2011 Toyota Tacoma Have?

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Rust, particularly in areas using road salt, is a significant concern, especially on the frame. Regular inspection and rustproofing are recommended. Some owners have reported issues with the leaf springs, leading to sagging or breakage, though this is more prevalent in older models. The rear differential can develop leaks. Another area of concern is the potential for premature lower ball joint failure. Listen for clunking sounds from the front suspension. There have been recalls related to the propeller shaft and potential fuel leakage in certain models, so check the VIN with Toyota for recall status. Some owners find the interior materials to be somewhat cheap and prone to scratching or wear. Overall, the 2011 Tacoma maintains a good reliability record, but addressing these potential issues can help ensure long-term ownership satisfaction. It's advisable to have a pre-purchase inspection done by a qualified mechanic.

How long will the 2011 Toyota Tacoma last?

With proper maintenance, the 2011 Toyota Tacoma can easily reach 200,000 to 300,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items are crucial. Long-term durability is a strong point, but rust prevention is key, especially in colder climates. The frame, if not properly maintained, can corrode. Weaknesses often appear in suspension components, such as ball joints and leaf springs, over time. Keeping up with these maintenance items will extend the Tacoma's life considerably.

I purchased my 2011 Tacoma, TSS package 4.0 with high mileage, drove it 3 years and spent $1.83 on a blinker bulb and that's it. Oil and filters also of course. Traded it in on a 2023 Tacoma access cab and love it!

Great used truck. Exactly what I was looking for and good price. truck is roomy and will fill my needs. salesman was excellent and building was clean.
Ms. Gracie
This truck has not had any repairs except to replace the horn since I have owned it. I have bought 4 new tires only twice since I bought it in 2011 and that is all I have done to my truck. It’s has room in the back for small passengers but for me and my 4 year old granddaughter is just perfect and I can load things in the back of the truck. It’s like a 4 door car and a truck all together. I put luggage in tubs and Cover them up so we have enough room in the cab. It’s perfect. The V6 doesn’t use a lot of gas but still can go up mountains like in the Ozarks.
Negative Owner Reviews
Dave
I had a 2001 that was totaled in an accident so I repllaced it with a new tacoma. Not the same quality on the inside. It is cheap, cheap , cheap. It is to big, it handles mushy and the right rear tire spins on right turns causing significant uneven tire wear. Automatic transmissin shifts are not smooth. What a disppointment. Overpriced. I cant wait to dump it.
winterdriver
This is my third Toyota Tacoma and I am SO disappointed!!! These trucks are NOT what they used to be. My '02 Tacoma beats this truck hands down. The Tacoma has been made into a citified town truck. It's handsome, bigger (unfortunately for those of us who still like a 'small' truck) and those are about the nicest things I can say. It can't get uphill in deep snow, lags going uphill when you really need the power - I think it's too big of a truck for the 4 cylinder engine. Major, major disappointment in legendary Tacomas. Toyota, are you listening???

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma's tech and safety features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. Standard features include antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), and traction control. Front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags are also standard.

Entertainment options include a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might feature satellite radio or a touchscreen display, but these are typically quite small and rudimentary. Optional features include a backup camera (introduced later in the model year) and Bluetooth connectivity.

Driver-assistance features are limited. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available on this model year.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good for the 2011 Tacoma. However, it's important to note that crash-test standards have evolved since 2011, so its performance might not be directly comparable to newer vehicles. Check the IIHS and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) websites for specific ratings.

2011 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma had a starting MSRP of around $17,000 to $28,000 when new, depending on the trim and configuration. Current used market prices generally range from $15,000 to $25,000. Tacomas are known for their excellent resale value. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (TRD models command higher prices), and location (demand in certain areas can inflate prices). Depreciation is relatively slow compared to other trucks, making it a solid investment. Even with age, they hold their value remarkably well due to their proven reliability and reputation.

2011 Toyota Tacoma Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for a truck of its size, especially with the four-cylinder engine. Maintenance is relatively straightforward and parts are readily available. Repairs are generally infrequent and not overly expensive. Long-term ownership costs are lower than many other trucks due to its reliability and strong resale value. While not the cheapest vehicle to buy upfront, its long-term value makes it a wise financial choice.

2011 Toyota Tacoma Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Toyota Tacoma is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma competes with the Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger (prior to its reintroduction), and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma generally surpasses its rivals, particularly the older Ranger. The Nissan Frontier offers a similar level of ruggedness and a slightly lower price point, but its interior and features are less updated. The Colorado/Canyon provides a more comfortable ride and a wider range of features, but may not match the Tacoma's off-road prowess or resale value.

Performance-wise, the Tacoma's V6 engine is comparable to the V6 options in its competitors. The base four-cylinder can feel underpowered compared to the V6s available in the Frontier and Colorado.

For features, the Tacoma lags behind the Colorado/Canyon, which offer more modern infotainment and safety technologies.

If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Tacoma is an excellent choice. If you prioritize comfort and features, the Colorado/Canyon might be a better alternative, but be prepared for potentially higher long-term ownership costs. The Frontier offers a budget-friendly option with similar capabilities, but sacrifices some refinement. If you need a very basic and inexpensive truck, an older Ford Ranger could suffice, but its age may present reliability concerns.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Toyota Tacoma a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma is ideal for those seeking a reliable and durable truck for work, off-roading, or everyday use. It's a worthwhile buy if you prioritize longevity and strong resale value over the latest tech features. A used 2011 Tacoma is a great option, especially if well-maintained. The TRD trims are desirable for off-road enthusiasts. Check for rust, especially on the frame, before purchasing. If you need more modern features or a more comfortable ride, consider alternatives, but be aware that you may sacrifice some reliability and resale value. Overall, it is a very good used truck.

Biggest lemon I have owned new! Worst customer ser

I have had so many issues I can't list them all. Leaf springs broke, not covered under recall. Frame rusted out but dealer said it was fine then called me to do a replacement. Rear springs were sqeaking till I went aftermarket because I had to replace them. Radio turns on and off by itself, comes back on at full volume. Clock spring went bad. Original front brake pads delaminated from backer, NOT COVERED. Horn stopped working, bought new one. Gas cap door fell off, NOT COVERED. Wheel center caps keep falling off. Front running lights burned through plastic lens covers. This vehicle has never left me strande but a lot of stuff that should have been covered under warranty wasn't. I also found the dealers in my area have poor customer service and are very expensive when doing any kind of work on my Tacoma.

This truck is powerful, great looking and does really good on gas consumption. No matter where I’m at, I get complimented on its great looks. It has been everything I could’ve expected from a Tacoma!

Most dependable Truck

This truck has not had any repairs except to replace the horn since I have owned it. I have bought 4 new tires only twice since I bought it in 2011 and that is all I have done to my truck. It’s has room in the back for small passengers but for me and my 4 year old granddaughter is just perfect and I can load things in the back of the truck. It’s like a 4 door car and a truck all together. I put luggage in tubs and Cover them up so we have enough room in the cab. It’s perfect. The V6 doesn’t use a lot of gas but still can go up mountains like in the Ozarks.

this is a good work truck

So far so good, has very good pickup for a 4cylinder. very smooth riding for a pickup truck. Like the extended cab with 6ft bed.

Test drive it to see for yourself. superior.

Thorough maintenance records. Stored in carport. Test drive to appreciate it. Everyone who see it says, "Wow." Best truck I have ever owned. I no longer need it as I m retired.

Great vehicle so far

I am pleased with my new 2011 Tacoma. More room and a smoother ride than my past Tacoma. Only had it a couple of days which is too soon to really tell, but so far so good.
