The Good
The 2008 Tacoma boasts impressive reliability and off-road prowess, appealing to practical buyers seeking durability. Its capable performance and truck-like design cater to those wanting a rugged and adventurous vehicle. Good resale value and reasonable efficiency further enhance its appeal for both emotional and pragmatic considerations. It is dependable and a solid investment.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2008 Tacoma include relatively cramped rear seating in Access Cab models and the potential for rust, especially in regions with road salt. Some owners have reported issues with the leaf springs. Fuel economy isn't stellar compared to modern trucks. Also, the interior plastics can feel somewhat cheap.

What Problems Does the 2008 Toyota Tacoma Have?
Another known issue is the potential for leaf spring failure. The leaf springs can crack or break, especially under heavy loads or in harsh conditions. Some owners have also reported issues with the ball joints. There have also been complaints about the intermediate steering shaft causing a clunking noise.
Long-term reliability is generally excellent, but addressing potential rust issues is paramount. Regular inspections and preventative measures, such as rustproofing, can significantly extend the life of the vehicle. Also, check for any outstanding recalls on the VIN. While the 2008 model year is generally reliable, these specific issues should be investigated before purchasing.
How long will the 2008 Toyota Tacoma last?
Long-term durability is a Tacoma strong suit, but rust remains the primary concern, especially in colder climates. Suspension components, like ball joints and shocks, may need replacement over time. The interior might show wear and tear, but the core mechanicals are typically robust. Proper care ensures many years of reliable service.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are minimal, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). Optional features could include vehicle stability control (VSC) and traction control (TRAC).
Safety features include front airbags, side curtain airbags (optional), and tire pressure monitoring.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary depending on the cab configuration. The IIHS gave the 2008 Tacoma Access Cab a "Good" rating in the frontal offset crash test, but a "Marginal" rating in the side impact test. NHTSA ratings also varied depending on the specific test. Check these ratings for specific cab types to get an accurate picture of its safety performance. The lack of modern driver-assistance tech like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning is a notable omission by today's standards.

2008 Toyota Tacoma Prices and Market Value
Tacomas hold their value exceptionally well due to their reputation for reliability and durability. Low mileage, excellent condition, and desirable features (like the TRD package) significantly boost resale value. Rust-free examples command a premium, especially in regions prone to corrosion. High demand further contributes to their strong resale value.

How Does the 2008 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Pickup Truck?
In terms of features, the Tacoma's tech was relatively basic compared to some rivals, especially in lower trims. However, its focus on durability and off-road performance set it apart. For raw towing capacity, the Colorado and Frontier might slightly edge out the Tacoma in some configurations.
Alternatives to the 2008 Tacoma include newer model years of the same Tacoma generation (2009-2015) if budget allows, as these might offer slightly improved features or address some of the earlier model year concerns. If a more comfortable ride is a priority and off-roading is less important, the Chevrolet Colorado could be considered. However, for overall reliability, resale value, and a proven track record, the 2008 Tacoma remains a strong contender. The Honda Ridgeline offers a more car-like ride and handling, but at the expense of traditional truck capabilities.

Great mid-sized pickup to use as my everday car.I used this pickup as my go-to means of transportation each day. The Access Cab had four doors making it easy and convenient to use for shopping. It had a 5-speed transmission with the Toyota 4-cyl. engine, so it was very economical to drive. (25mpg) It was reliable. In the winter, I added two sand tubes to the truck bed and had no problems with Kansas City winters. My daughters loved the fact that their dad drove a little pickup, especially when they had a piece of furniture or equipment that needed moving.

Great CarDid everything it needed to. Never once broke down on me. It rode well and I never had any issues with it. The only reason I sold it was because I wanted something with a little better mileage.

One original ownerReliable and great on performance. Truck was garaged for the first 6 years I owned it. All maintenance has been done through Toyota dealership. Rear bumper has dents and not because of a major accident. My wife back into a railing.

Practical daily driverI have been driving a 1996 GMC Sierra K1500 w 5.7li Vortec V8 for the last 23 years (since it was new). It came time to buy something more practical and fuel efficient. I was initally looking at Chevy Colorados, and GMC Canyons. I test drove one and it felt cheap. The Tacoma holds it's value and is well designed. I expect to only have to do regular maintenance and just drive this truck for some time to come.
