2017 Dodge Challenger Review: Strong Coupe With Reasonable Ownership Costs As It Ages

Rating: 4.76
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Dodge Challenger is a modern reincarnation of the classic American muscle car. A two-door coupe with retro styling, it continues the Challenger's legacy, which spans back to the 1970s. Key trims include the SXT, R/T, SRT 392, and the monstrous Hellcat. Original pricing ranged from around $28,000 to over $70,000 for the Hellcat. Its standout feature is its potent engine options and spacious interior compared to its rivals.
The Good

The 2017 Challenger excels in performance, particularly in higher trims with potent V8 engines. Its retro design evokes emotional appeal, while the spacious interior and comfortable ride cater to practicality. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers decent value considering the performance and features. Reliability is generally good, but specific trims and maintenance history are crucial.

The Bad

The 2017 Challenger's weaknesses include its size and weight, which affect handling. Fuel economy can be poor, especially with the larger engines. Some owners have reported issues with the Uconnect infotainment system and electrical glitches. Rust can be a concern in certain climates, so inspect the undercarriage. Brakes, especially on models used for performance driving, can require attention.

What Problems Does the 2017 Dodge Challenger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 Dodge Challenger include issues with the Uconnect infotainment system, such as freezing, glitches, and slow response times. Some owners have reported electrical problems, including issues with the car's computer and sensor malfunctions. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission, have also been noted. Certain models have been subject to recalls. Research specific VINs for outstanding recall notices. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around potential issues with the high-performance engines (particularly the Hellcat) if not properly maintained. The 2017 model year, like other recent Challengers, may experience issues related to the active exhaust system, where valves can become stuck or noisy. Overall, while the Challenger has a decent reputation, proper maintenance and addressing any warning signs promptly are crucial for long-term reliability. Examine vehicle history reports for recurring issues and assess the condition of major components during a pre-purchase inspection.

How long will the 2017 Dodge Challenger last?

Based on owner data and typical maintenance, a 2017 Dodge Challenger can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service with consistent care. Long-term durability depends heavily on driving habits and adherence to maintenance schedules. Weaknesses over time often involve wear and tear on suspension components, potential rust issues (especially in colder climates), and degradation of interior materials. High-performance models, particularly those frequently driven hard, may experience engine or transmission issues sooner than average. Preventative maintenance is key to extending the vehicle's lifespan.

This vehicle, especially after putting on various racing stripes and "Super Bee" decals (thank you Ebay), is a real "head turner" in the yellow color I bought it in! I get many a complement. As for me, I am not at all disappointed with my purchase after 1 1/2 years/5K miles of ownership. Its six cylinder engine is SUPURB...surprising power and not making the engine compartment so crammed. And I love the highway MPG. I DO get the occasional freeze up/cut out of the radio -- but that's perhaps every 2-3 months and is remedied (for me) in the next start up. But that's about it! This could be my last car purchase (I keep cars for 20 years, and I'm 63 years old)...but if not, I'll be buying another Challenger!!! 🙂 This Mercedes designed vehicle is SOLID! And I hope in their next version they don't overly mess with success!!! 🙂 I second the motion to bring out a special edition, "Roadrunner Edition"!!! I LOVED that old spoiler on the old ones!!! Camarro and Mustang could NEVER pull that off...!

2017 Dodge Challenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Dodge Challenger ranged from approximately $28,000 for the base SXT to over $70,000 for the Hellcat. Current used market prices vary significantly based on trim, mileage, and condition. Expect to find SXT models in the $18,000 - $25,000 range, while Hellcat models can still command prices between $50,000 and $65,000. Depreciation is steeper for the base models, while the higher-performance trims, particularly the Hellcat, hold their value relatively well due to their rarity and desirability. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, trim level, and modifications. Colors like Sublime Green and Plum Crazy can increase collectibility.

2017 Dodge Challenger Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Dodge Challenger can be costly to own, especially the higher-performance trims. Insurance premiums are typically higher due to the car's performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, particularly with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be expensive, especially for specialized parts on the Hellcat. Long-term ownership costs are influenced by driving habits and maintenance diligence. While the V6 models are more economical, the V8s offer a significantly different driving experience, but at a higher price.

How Does the 2017 Dodge Challenger Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger's key rivals include the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. In terms of performance, the Challenger offers comparable power, especially in the V8 trims, but it's generally heavier and less agile than the Mustang or Camaro. Feature-wise, the Challenger boasts a more spacious interior and a user-friendly infotainment system. Reliability is comparable across the board. Price-wise, the Challenger is generally competitive. Alternatives: * **Ford Mustang:** Offers sharper handling and a more modern interior, but a smaller back seat. * **Chevrolet Camaro:** Provides more athletic handling but sacrifices rear seat space and visibility. * **Dodge Charger (for those needing 4 doors):** Offers similar performance to the Challenger but with added practicality. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities. The Challenger excels in retro styling, interior space, and straight-line performance. The Mustang and Camaro are sportier, while the Charger is a more practical choice with similar muscle car appeal.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger a Good Vehicle?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is ideal for those seeking a modern muscle car with retro styling, a comfortable ride, and a spacious interior. It's worth buying, especially used, if you prioritize performance and aesthetics over fuel efficiency and ultimate handling prowess. A used 2017 Challenger can be a good value, but a pre-purchase inspection is crucial. The R/T trim offers a good balance of performance and affordability. The Hellcat is desirable but comes with higher ownership costs. Consider a V6 model for better fuel economy, but be aware of the significant performance difference. Assess your needs and budget before making a decision.

Still liking the dodge!

Not a cheap car to purchase but it's really fun to drive. I really wanted the 8 but ended up with a fully loaded, 2 tone interior v6 with all the options I wanted. The v6 performance is very good and moves with a purpose. Interior is comfortable with a thick seat. The nav system is the best I have ever owned. Almost too many options to configure. The AC seats is a huge plus in my book. The heated seats and steering wheel will cook you. The v6 moves really well and I found it more fun to drive than the 2017 SS Camaro and 2020 Mustang. I totally recommend this vehicle if your looking for a sedan. The stereo hits pretty good but not amazing. The nav likes to yell at you which is a tad irritating. The back seat is useable for kids or adults you dont care for too much. The trunk is awesome! Most likely I will buy another one with the larger engine package as my next vehicle. I still find myself shocked to say that..... Find a nice one and a fun salesman and drive it like you stole it....
