The 2016 Dodge Challenger is a modern muscle car with a lineage tracing back to the iconic 1970s Challenger. It boasts a classic two-door coupe body style. The model years for this generation spanned 2008-2023. Key trims included SXT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392, and SRT Hellcat. The pricing range when new varied greatly depending on trim and options, roughly from $27,000 to over $70,000. Its retro styling, powerful engine options, and comfortable interior made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2016 Challenger excels in performance, especially with its V8 options, offering thrilling acceleration. Its retro design evokes strong emotions, while its spacious cabin and comfortable ride appeal to practical needs. Reliability is generally good, and it offers excellent value for its performance capabilities. It's a statement car that's also surprisingly livable.

The Bad

The 2016 Challenger's size can be a drawback, making it less nimble than some rivals. Fuel economy, especially with the larger engines, is poor. Some owners have reported issues with the Uconnect infotainment system. Watch out for potential electrical glitches and ensure regular maintenance is performed on higher-performance models.

What Problems Does the 2016 Dodge Challenger Have?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger has experienced a few frequently reported problems. Some owners have noted issues with the Uconnect infotainment system, including freezing, slow response times, and Bluetooth connectivity problems. Electrical glitches, such as issues with the power windows and door locks, have also been reported. Some models have experienced issues with the active exhaust system.
Recalls for the 2016 Challenger have included concerns about potential fuel leaks, airbag malfunctions, and issues with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Owners should check the NHTSA website for specific recall information related to their VIN.
Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the longevity of the high-performance engines, particularly the Hellcat. Ensuring proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and adhering to the recommended service schedule, is crucial for preventing issues. Transmission issues, while not widespread, have been reported in some cases. Regular transmission fluid changes are recommended, especially for models driven aggressively. Some reports of paint quality issues have also surfaced.

How long will the 2016 Dodge Challenger last?

With good maintenance, a 2016 Dodge Challenger can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service can extend beyond 10-15 years depending on usage and care. Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Weaknesses over time may include suspension components wearing out, potential for rust in colder climates, and gradual degradation of interior materials. High-performance models might require more frequent servicing of brakes and tires. Regular fluid changes and preventative maintenance are key to maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger features the Uconnect infotainment system, available with a 5-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen. This system includes features like Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and available navigation. Entertainment options include a premium Harman Kardon sound system. Driver-assistance features were limited but included available blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and adaptive cruise control. A rearview camera was also available.
Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features included forward collision warning and automatic high beams.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally give the 2016 Challenger a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary, but generally show good performance in moderate overlap front crash tests, but marginal performance in the small overlap front crash test. It's important to check specific ratings for the model year and trim level.
The technology in the 2016 Challenger is reasonable for its time, but may feel dated compared to newer vehicles. Uconnect is user-friendly, and the available safety features are helpful, but advanced driver-assistance systems are not as comprehensive as those found in newer cars.

2016 Dodge Challenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Dodge Challenger ranged from around $27,000 for the base SXT to over $70,000 for a fully equipped SRT Hellcat. Used market prices currently range from approximately $15,000 to $45,000, depending on trim, mileage, and condition. Depreciation has been moderate, with higher-performance trims retaining value better due to their desirability. Factors affecting resale value include engine type (V8 models command higher prices), overall condition, mileage, and any modifications. Well-maintained, low-mileage examples, especially Hellcats, hold their value exceptionally well.

2016 Dodge Challenger Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is generally considered costly to own, particularly the V8 models. Insurance costs can be high, especially for younger drivers or with the high-performance trims. Fuel consumption is significant, especially with the Hemi engines. Maintenance costs are moderate, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for specialized components on the Hellcat. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential repairs and higher fuel costs. The V6 model is somewhat more economical, but overall, it's not a cheap car to run.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Dodge Challenger Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger competes with the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. In terms of performance, the Challenger offers comparable power, especially in its higher trims, though the Mustang and Camaro might feel more agile due to their smaller size. Feature-wise, the Challenger offers a more comfortable and spacious interior than its rivals. Reliability is generally on par with the Mustang and Camaro. Price-wise, the Challenger is often competitively priced.
Compared to the Mustang, the Challenger offers a more retro and muscular design, and a more comfortable ride. The Mustang excels in handling and offers a more modern interior. Compared to the Camaro, the Challenger offers better visibility and a more usable back seat. The Camaro is known for its sharper handling and more aggressive styling.
Alternatives to the Challenger could include the Dodge Charger (for similar styling but with four doors), the Nissan 370Z (for a sportier driving experience at a potentially lower price point, but with less practicality), or a used BMW 3 Series (for a blend of performance and luxury).
Whether it's better depends on individual preferences. The Challenger appeals to those prioritizing retro styling, comfort, and straight-line performance. The Mustang and Camaro are better suited for those seeking a more nimble and sporty driving experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Dodge Challenger a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is ideal for those who appreciate classic muscle car styling, comfortable cruising, and powerful engine options. It's worth buying if you value its retro design and spacious interior and are prepared for higher running costs. Buying used can be a good option, as depreciation has already occurred. Consider the R/T or R/T Scat Pack for a good balance of performance and price. The Hellcat is for serious enthusiasts only. Ensure any used Challenger has a clean title and a thorough inspection before purchase. If fuel economy and nimble handling are priorities, consider alternatives.

The true classic muscle car...

I had a Camaro before and if your not going to be racing on every stop light ( mustangs) then looks is everything. The car is gorgeous to look at, feels heavy when driving around but safer than the Chevy. Just let it roar and never mind your 0-60 times is about the big engine feeling. Just keep it classy and between the speed limits ... You already got the trophy.

IN YOUR FACE POWER

I have the 2018 Challenger Scat Pack. It just wants to go! Touch the accelerator and POW! I also have an '09 Vette. They are both very powerful cars and both very comfortable...but they are very different. The Vette is a more refined sports car. The factory exhaust is quieter and it does get better mpg but when you hit the pedal it goes. The Scat Pack is a brute. If they were both animals I would describe them as...the vette would be a Cheetah, sleek, quiet and very fast, the Challenger is a Grizzly Bear.

Miles of smiles

The only downside to this car is your cheeks will hurt from the perma-smile that it puts on your face. It is the definition of awesome. Looks, feels, drives like a muscle car should and sends the competition home crying like a little school girl who just got a spanking and it separates the men from the boys in the world of cars.
