The 2022 Dodge Challenger is a modern muscle car with a retro-inspired design, reminiscent of its 1970s ancestor. It's a 2-door coupe, offered since 2008, continuing a legacy of powerful performance. Key trims range from the SXT and GT to the R/T, Scat Pack, and the high-performance SRT Hellcat variants. The pricing ranges roughly from $30,000 to over $80,000 depending on the trim and options. Its bold styling, spacious interior for a coupe, and wide array of powerful engine options are key factors in its popularity.
The Good

The 2022 Challenger boasts exceptional performance with its various engine options, including potent V8s. It offers surprising comfort for a muscle car, with a spacious interior. Its iconic design appeals to enthusiasts emotionally, while its relatively simple engineering contributes to acceptable reliability and overall value. It's a performance bargain for the horsepower you get.

The Bad

The 2022 Challenger's weaknesses include its size and weight, which impact handling and fuel economy. Visibility can be challenging due to thick pillars. The base V6 engine can feel underpowered compared to the V8s. Some infotainment features may feel dated compared to newer rivals. Watch out for potential electrical issues and ensure proper maintenance is followed.

What Problems Does the 2022 Dodge Challenger Have?

The 2022 Dodge Challenger, like other model years, has reported some recurring issues. Common concerns include electrical problems such as malfunctioning sensors or issues with the Uconnect infotainment system. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting. Fuel system issues and problems with the active exhaust system have also been noted.

Recalls for the Challenger have varied year to year. It's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information specific to the 2022 model. Common recall areas on older models have involved issues with the fuel pump, airbags, and powertrain.

Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with higher-performance models. The supercharged engines require diligent maintenance. Premature wear on brakes and tires is common with aggressive driving. While the Challenger's platform is relatively robust, consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly are essential for longevity. Earlier model years (2008-2014) had some complaints regarding water leaks and rust, but these issues have been largely addressed in later iterations like the 2022.

How long will the 2022 Dodge Challenger last?

With good maintenance, a 2022 Dodge Challenger can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, or 10-15 years. This assumes regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires, and addressing any mechanical or electrical issues promptly. Long-term durability depends heavily on driving habits; aggressive driving will shorten the lifespan of components. Weaknesses can emerge over time, especially with the higher-performance models, including potential transmission issues, increased oil consumption in the V8 engines, and wear and tear on suspension components. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Dodge Challenger comes standard with the Uconnect 4 infotainment system, featuring a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto integration. Higher trims offer the Uconnect 4C system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, navigation, and enhanced features. Available entertainment options include a premium Harman Kardon sound system.

Driver-assistance features are available, but not as comprehensive as some competitors. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and rear parking sensors are optional.

Standard safety features include:
  • Traction control
  • Electronic stability control
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Multiple airbags

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA are generally good, though the Challenger has not consistently achieved top scores in all categories. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary; it's important to check the specific ratings for the 2022 model year. The structural design is solid, but some of the driver-assistance technologies are less advanced than those in newer vehicles.

2022 Dodge Challenger Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Dodge Challenger had a starting MSRP of around $30,000 for the base SXT model, with prices climbing to over $80,000 for the high-performance SRT Hellcat variants. Used market prices vary significantly based on trim, mileage, and condition. Expect to find used 2022 Challengers ranging from the mid-$20,000s to over $70,000. Depreciation is relatively moderate for muscle cars, especially for the higher-performance models, which tend to hold their value well. Factors affecting resale value include the engine (V8s command a premium), overall condition, mileage, and any modifications made to the vehicle.

2022 Dodge Challenger Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Dodge Challenger is generally not economical to own. Insurance costs can be higher, particularly for the high-performance models. Fuel consumption is substantial, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be expensive, especially if dealing with the supercharged engines or specialized parts. Long-term ownership costs can be significant due to fuel, insurance, and potential repairs, making it a costly vehicle to own compared to more fuel-efficient or less performance-oriented cars.

2022 Dodge Challenger Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Dodge Challenger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Dodge Challenger Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2022 Dodge Challenger competes with the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. In terms of performance, the Challenger offers a wider range of powerful engine options, including the insane Hellcat variants, often exceeding the Mustang and Camaro in raw horsepower. Feature-wise, the Challenger has a more spacious interior and a more user-friendly infotainment system compared to the Camaro. However, the Mustang and Camaro generally offer sharper handling due to their lighter weight and smaller size.

Reliability is comparable among the three, though all have potential issues. Price-wise, the Challenger is generally competitive, especially at the lower trim levels.

Alternatives to the Challenger include the Ford Mustang Mach-E (electric performance) or a used BMW M4 for a more refined performance experience. The Mustang offers a more modern driving experience with sharper handling, while the Camaro is a more track-focused option. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities: the Challenger excels in straight-line speed and retro style, while the others offer different strengths.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Dodge Challenger a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2022 Dodge Challenger is ideal for enthusiasts who value retro styling, powerful engines, and a comfortable ride. It's worth buying if you prioritize these qualities and are willing to accept the trade-offs in fuel economy and handling. A used Challenger can be a good value, especially if you're looking for a V8 model. The Scat Pack offers a great balance of performance and price. Buying new allows for customization, but depreciation can be a factor. Consider a well-maintained used model to save money, but always perform a thorough inspection. If you want a practical daily driver, other vehicles will suit your needs better.

2022 Dodge Challenger

Just hit 10k miles. I have bought so many brand new cars in my life and this is the only car that has not had to go back to the dealer for warranty repair. So thrilled with it. Drives great, plenty of power and so responsive. Good looking too. Very comfortable in the front seat. All around a great car. Dodge has me for life!

Retired after 43 years with my company and now 67 years old. on December 31, 2022

1972 now a 2022 a 50 year later present.!!!

I owned a 1972 Challenger and 50 years later ordered one as a retirement present ( 2022 Chandler ScatPack Widebody with Shaker Hood). A nice ride for a muscle care, powerful with the 6.4 liter engine, a great look and highly recommend getting one if interested before this style goes away.

2022 Scat Pack Challenger

Your performance rating needs more stars! I've wanted a Challenger since 1970 and over the years it just never materialized. They announced the final year was mostly specialty limited editions. A friend and neighbor purchased a very nice low mileage used Challenger and he told me to drive it! He said we weren't getting any younger and its now or never and i said, xxxx right! Found a new 2022 Scat Pack in TorRed and a few hours later is was ours! I'll never be able to get the smile off my face!

Awesome Dodge Challenger GT AWD!

2022 Dodge Challenger GT AWD, a lot of car for the money! AWD, Killer looks, over 300HP, very comfortable front seats, upgraded Alpine stereo (which is really quite good), Nav, 20" wheels that look awesome and you have a great car for not a lot of green! I traded in a luxury BMW 7 series that was fine but expensive and am very pleased with this car. You need to take one for a drive, I got a BLK/BLK an it looks really nice! Lots of compliments.

Total Satisfaction

My first Challenger was a 2014 RT; my second one is a 2018 RT. I am thinking seriously about trading for a 2022 RT. I have loved both RTs; every mile has been a very satisfying experience. If I were not happily married to my sweet wife, I might just think of marrying my Challenger. FYI, both cars were 5.7 6-speeds.
