Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Dodge Challenger marked the return of a muscle car icon. A retro-styled, two-door coupe, it captured the essence of the original Challenger. Model years for this generation began in 2008. Key trims included the SE, R/T, and SRT8. The 2009 pricing ranged from around $22,000 to $40,000 when new. Its bold styling and available powerful V8 engines made it stand out, attracting buyers seeking a modern take on classic muscle.
The Good

The 2009 Challenger's advantages include strong performance, particularly in the R/T and SRT8 trims, and a comfortable ride for a muscle car. Its iconic design evokes nostalgia, appealing to emotional buyers. While not the most efficient, it offers decent value for its performance. Reliability is generally good, but depends on maintenance.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2009 Challenger include its large size and weight, which can impact handling. Fuel economy, especially with the V8 engines, is not its strong suit. Potential issues to watch out for include electrical problems, particularly with the early model years, and wear on suspension components due to the car's weight.

What Problems Does the 2009 Dodge Challenger Have?

The 2009 Dodge Challenger, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Electrical issues, such as problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), are common complaints, leading to issues with starting, stalling, and various electrical accessories. Some owners have also reported issues with the suspension, particularly the front suspension components, which can wear prematurely due to the car's weight.

Rust can be a concern in areas with harsh winters or road salt usage, especially on early models. Engine issues are less common but can occur, particularly with higher mileage examples or those that haven't been properly maintained. Specific recalls for the 2009 model year may include issues related to airbag deployment or fuel system components; it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the electrical systems and the wear and tear on suspension and braking components due to the vehicle's weight and performance capabilities. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are key to mitigating these concerns.

How long will the 2009 Dodge Challenger last?

With good maintenance, a 2009 Dodge Challenger can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report that their Challengers are still running strong after 10-15 years of service. However, consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs, is crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by climate, driving habits, and the quality of replacement parts used.

Weaknesses over time tend to be related to electrical components, suspension wear, and potential rust issues, especially in areas with harsh winters. The longevity of the engine and transmission is generally good if properly maintained.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Dodge Challenger features a fairly basic tech setup for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered premium audio systems, like a Boston Acoustics sound system.

Driver-assistance features were limited, reflecting the technology available in 2009. It typically included features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.

Safety features included standard front and side airbags, as well as electronic stability control. Optional features could include a security alarm system.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific scores. Generally, the 2009 Challenger performed reasonably well in crash tests for its class, but specific ratings vary depending on the testing organization.

Overall, the tech and safety features were adequate for the time but are significantly less advanced compared to modern vehicles. The focus was primarily on performance and styling rather than cutting-edge technology.

2009 Dodge Challenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Dodge Challenger ranged from approximately $22,000 for the base SE model to around $40,000 for the SRT8. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Expect to find SE models in the $8,000-$12,000 range, R/T models between $12,000-$18,000, and SRT8 models from $18,000-$25,000 or higher, depending on condition and rarity.

Depreciation has been significant, but the Challenger's iconic status helps it retain value better than some other cars. Factors affecting resale value include the trim level (SRT8 holds value best), condition, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. A clean title and well-documented maintenance history also contribute to higher resale value.

2009 Dodge Challenger Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Dodge Challenger is generally not an economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high, especially for the R/T and SRT8 trims due to their performance capabilities. Fuel costs are also higher, particularly with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are average for a car of its type, but some parts can be expensive, especially for the SRT8. Long-term ownership costs can be significant due to potential repairs, fuel consumption, and insurance premiums. Budget accordingly.

2009 Dodge Challenger Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Dodge Challenger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Dodge Challenger Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2009 Dodge Challenger competed primarily with the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro (although the Camaro was not available in 2009). In terms of performance, the Challenger R/T and SRT8 offered comparable power to the Mustang GT and similar performance models. The Challenger stood out with its retro styling and spacious interior.

Regarding features, the Challenger was generally competitive, although the Mustang might have offered a slightly wider range of options depending on the trim. Reliability is generally on par with its rivals, although each has its own common issues. Price-wise, the Challenger was usually in a similar range to the Mustang.

Alternatives to the 2009 Challenger include the Ford Mustang GT (for a similar performance experience with potentially better handling) and, depending on budget and availability, later model years of the Chevrolet Camaro (which re-entered the market in 2010). If practicality is a concern, a modern sports sedan might be a better choice. However, for those seeking a blend of retro styling and V8 power, the Challenger remains a compelling option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Dodge Challenger a Good Coupe?

The 2009 Dodge Challenger is ideal for those who appreciate retro styling, comfortable cruising, and available V8 power. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you're looking for a classic muscle car experience without the new car price. Consider the R/T or SRT8 trims for the best performance, but be prepared for higher running costs. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to check for common issues like electrical problems and suspension wear. If you prioritize fuel efficiency or sharp handling, other options might be more suitable. Overall, the 2009 Challenger offers a unique blend of style and performance, making it a desirable choice for the right buyer.

The Challenger SRT8 is the best.

I love this car; it is fast and pleasant to drive. So much fun to go thru the gears with all the horsepower. 425 hp lots of power. Great looking too. What more could you want?

Should have bought one sooner

This car meets all of my needs combining performance with comfort. Plenty of power to go out and have fun, yet more than enough room you don't feel cramped and can seat the kids in back.

Most fun riding on 4 wheels

The car is a treat to drive. The rumble of the V8, the beautiful lines, shifting through the 6 gears. The most legal fun you can have!

Best car ever

This is a very good car not too small. Only thing I had to do is change the oil and filter for the last 11 years. Has never broken down very comfortable like a first class ride.

Too beautiful to pass up!

I have wanted one of these cars since they came out. I love the look and style, along with the sun roof and relatively good gas mileage. The trunk is a lot bigger than I thought it would be as well, which is a huge bonus! The only thing I feel its lacking is the controls in the steering wheel for the cruise control and the radio.

A car I still look back at when I park.

I've always thought of and driven my 09 Rt 6spd as a GT type car. Its heavy no doubt. But it moves pretty effortlessly. It can easily cross states at a 90-100 mph run pulling 1800 rpm. Or run a left lane in 4th and 5th with best of its class. This car has given me 0 problems in my 8 yrs I've owned it. Garage kept. No winters. Indy 500 Firestone's help big time. The germans designed mine. It's a solid coupe. Tough. Good looking. Powerful

10 years in and still fresh

I have had this car for ten years and 81,000 miles. It still smile every time I get in it. The build quality is excellent and the car has aged gracefully. It is powerful and competent and will actually get mid 20s mpg on the highway. Not bad for a 425 horse V8. In my 45 years behind the wheel this is the only vehicle I have ever driven that I could spend 10 hours straight behind the wheel and want more.

Cheap Tire Roasting Fun

I bought my 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 in 2019 and it only had less than 10,000 miles on it. At this point I was able to get an almost brand new $40,000 + car for the price of a Kia and it is an impressive performance machine. 425 horsepower and a six speed manual transmission for the price you can't go wrong here. Great looking car, makes all the right sounds, and is big and comfortable for touring. Love it!
