Rating: 4.73
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Dodge Challenger is a modern muscle car, harking back to the iconic Challengers of the 1970s. It's a two-door coupe, known for its bold styling and powerful engine options. Key trims include the SE, SXT, R/T, and SRT8. Original pricing ranged from around $25,000 to over $40,000. The Challenger's retro design and available high-performance V8 engines make it stand out from its competitors, appealing to those seeking classic muscle car aesthetics with modern technology.
The Good

The 2012 Challenger offers strong performance, particularly with the V8 engines. Its retro design evokes nostalgia, while its spacious interior provides surprising comfort for a coupe. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers good value for its performance and features. It appeals to emotional buyers through its styling and power, and practical buyers through its relatively spacious interior and available features.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2012 Dodge Challenger include its relatively poor fuel economy, especially with the larger engines. The large size and thick pillars can hinder visibility. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic systems and suspension components. The base V6 engine can feel underpowered for such a large car, and handling isn't as sharp as some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2012 Dodge Challenger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Dodge Challenger include issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause various electrical problems, such as stalling, failure to start, or malfunctioning accessories. Some owners have reported problems with the suspension, including premature wear of ball joints and control arm bushings. There have also been reports of issues with the air conditioning system, such as compressor failure.
Recalls for the 2012 Challenger included issues related to the fuel pump relay, which could cause the engine to stall. Owners should check the NHTSA website or with a Dodge dealer to ensure that all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the potential for electrical issues and suspension wear. The HEMI engines are generally considered robust, but proper maintenance is crucial. Some owners have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with higher mileage vehicles. Regular fluid changes and preventative maintenance can help mitigate these potential issues. It's recommended to obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic to identify any existing or potential problems.

How long will the 2012 Dodge Challenger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Dodge Challenger can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 10-15 years of service out of their Challengers. Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs are crucial. Weaknesses over time often include suspension components wearing out, potential electrical glitches (especially with the TIPM), and possible transmission issues in higher-mileage examples. Rust can also be a concern in areas with harsh winters. Properly maintained models tend to hold up well mechanically.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Dodge Challenger offers a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features on lower trims include keyless entry, air conditioning, and a basic audio system. Higher trims offer upgraded audio systems with satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and a touchscreen display. The SRT8 model features performance-oriented technology like launch control and performance data recording.

Entertainment options include a six-speaker audio system (standard), and optional upgrades like a premium sound system with a subwoofer. Navigation was available as an optional feature on higher trims.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars. Electronic stability control and traction control are standard. Available safety features included antilock brakes, side airbags, and curtain airbags. Rear parking sensors were available as an option.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA generally give the 2012 Challenger four or five stars for overall safety. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it good ratings in most crash tests, but marginal in the small overlap front test (which was introduced later). Overall, it provided reasonable safety for its class and era.

2012 Dodge Challenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Dodge Challenger's price ranged from around $25,000 for the base SE to over $40,000 for the SRT8. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000 or more. Depreciation has been moderate, with the SRT8 models holding their value better due to their performance and desirability. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, trim level, engine (V8 models are worth more), and accident history. Low-mileage, well-maintained examples command higher prices.

2012 Dodge Challenger Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Dodge Challenger is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums can be high, especially for the V8 models and younger drivers. Fuel costs are also significant, particularly with the larger engines. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be expensive, especially for electrical or transmission issues. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits and the specific trim level. V6 models are more economical, while the SRT8 can be quite costly.

2012 Dodge Challenger Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Dodge Challenger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Dodge Challenger Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2012 Dodge Challenger's key rivals included the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. In terms of performance, the Challenger offered strong V8 options comparable to its rivals, though the Mustang often had a slight edge in handling. Feature-wise, the Challenger was generally competitive, though some might find the Mustang's interior more modern or the Camaro's tech more advanced. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Challenger has some known electrical issues, while the Mustang and Camaro have their own potential problems.

Price-wise, the Challenger was generally in the same ballpark as its competitors. The Challenger's retro styling and spacious interior set it apart. The Camaro offered sharper handling, while the Mustang provided a more balanced package of performance and refinement.

Alternatives to consider include the Ford Mustang GT (for better handling and fuel economy with similar performance) and the Chevrolet Camaro SS (for sharper handling but compromised visibility). If space isn't a concern, the Nissan 370Z offers a sportier driving experience at a similar price point. The Challenger excels at providing a comfortable and powerful muscle car experience with classic styling, but potential buyers should consider their priorities (handling, fuel economy, reliability) when making a decision.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Dodge Challenger a Good Coupe?

The 2012 Dodge Challenger is ideal for buyers seeking a modern muscle car with retro styling, a comfortable ride, and available V8 power. It's worth buying if you appreciate its unique design and are willing to accept its drawbacks, such as its size and fuel economy. A used 2012 Challenger can be a good value, especially if you opt for a well-maintained V6 or R/T model. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase for electrical issues, suspension wear, and accident damage. The SRT8 is desirable but comes with higher ownership costs. If performance is your top priority and you prefer better handling, consider the Mustang or Camaro instead.

I fell in love with the 1970's Challenger and again when they re-released it in 2008. These are the hottest and fastest cars on the road today.

Very good bang for the buck & 100% reliable

The Challenger with the V-6 outperforms others in the class...Very comfortable interior except the rear seating...you would have to be a childl or the front passengers would have to put their seats way forward to make the rear comfortable. The dash layout is excellent and all functions at your finger tips including the cruise & radio on the steering column. The"manual mode" for shifting is very precise...

Best car I've owned

Good power, best styling. Fun to drive. Downside is engine problems that were annoying to fix before their predetermined service interval. Would recommend to someone looking for an overpriced over bought muscle car
