Based on 40 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck, part of the second generation (1999-2007). Offered in regular, extended, and crew cab configurations, with short, standard, and long bed options. Key trims include the base model, SL, SLE, and SLT. New pricing ranged from approximately $18,000 to $35,000. Its popularity stems from its blend of rugged capability, comfortable ride, and distinctive GMC styling, offering a "professional grade" image.
The Good

The 2006 Sierra 1500 boasts strong engine options for capable performance and towing. Many consider it mechanically reliable. The comfortable cabin and classic truck design are appealing. It offers a good value proposition as a used truck, blending practicality with the emotional appeal of owning a robust and dependable pickup.

The Bad

The 2006 Sierra 1500 has potential issues with the instrument cluster, specifically the stepper motors. Rust can be a problem, especially in regions with road salt. Some owners report transmission issues and potential problems with the four-wheel-drive system. Check for proper maintenance history before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 has several frequently reported problems. A common issue involves the instrument cluster, where the stepper motors for the gauges can fail, leading to inaccurate readings. Transmission problems, such as slipping or rough shifting, are also reported by some owners. Rust, particularly on the rocker panels and around the wheel wells, is a concern, especially in colder climates where road salt is used.
There have been recalls related to various issues, including potential problems with the fuel system and airbag deployment. Owners should check the NHTSA website for specific recalls affecting their vehicle's VIN.
Long-term reliability concerns include the durability of the four-wheel-drive system. Components like the encoder motor can fail over time. Additionally, the durability of the brake system and some electrical components has been questioned. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these issues and prolong the truck's lifespan. Specific issues related to the 2006 model year are generally consistent with the broader generation of Sierras from this era.

How long will the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

A well-maintained 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 can easily exceed 200,000 miles, potentially reaching 300,000 miles or more. Years of service depend heavily on usage and upkeep, but 15-20 years is achievable with good maintenance. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses include rust susceptibility, especially in regions with harsh winters. The transmission and 4WD system (if equipped) can require attention over time. Regular fluid changes, timely repairs, and addressing rust promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity.

Mike
I bought a new 2006 1500 crew cab Z71 and it lasted 18 years. Great truck for the time it was built, extremely reliable. I don't think any new truck could be as reliable as this has been. It has over 180k miles, original engine, trans, exhaust and many other parts. I've only changed oil, brakes, radiator, alternator, starter, and power steering pump. The front hubs have been replaced a few times. Hubs are a common replacement item on these trucks. The 5.3l engine and 4l60 trans have been amazing. I've towed and hauled over the rated limit several times with no issues. Its a Northeast truck so rust is becoming a problem. I probably should have found a rust free 3500 instead of buying a new one.

u could take the engine out of this thing and throw it into the atlantic ocean, fish it out 30 years later, then fill the gas tank up with peanut butter and it would start right up. u cannot kill this truck. it will outlive you, your kids, and your grandkids.

I purchased my 2006 GMC Sierra new with 6 miles on the odometor and now I have over 300,000 miles and it still rides like a dream and cranks on the first try. Im anticipating on reaching the 500,000 mark. Great truck thanks GM!!!

All routine maintenance has been done as recommended by owners manual. Rotors turned and brakes done last year. A/C evaporator coil failed last summer and was replaced.

We've had this vehicle for six years. We bought it to have for winter driving, hauling the canoe/kayak/bikes and trips to the hardware/garden store. It is: under powered, left me stranded after only the first 100 miles, and we've needed to put $2100 into the brakes-includes new lines- after 17000 miles. The undercarriage has rusted beyond repair despite being kept clean. My mechanic-who is very good- recommends looking for another vehicle. Apparently GM used inferior materials in this model/year. None of our other vehicles which are the same year or older have had the brake/rust problems this vehicle has.

Bought directly as a trade-in directly from dealership at a dealer-only auction, as at the time I was a licensed used car dealer. At the time, it was purchased at a deep discount compared to retail so I cannot complain. On to the truck. If I would have paid retail, I would be greatly disappointed as it has more rattles ,and small irritating problems than my 98 did with twice the mileage and use and abuse from me and the previous owner. That being said, it has not left me stranded yet, more than I can say for other vehicles that I have owned, bought, trade, and worked on !

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500's tech was fairly basic by modern standards. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio, with options for a CD player and cassette player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with more speakers.
Driver-assistance features were limited. ABS (anti-lock braking system) was standard. Some trims offered options like cruise control.
Safety features included standard front airbags. Options such as side-impact airbags were available on some models.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary based on cab configuration. Generally, the Sierra 1500 performed reasonably well in frontal crash tests. However, side-impact protection was often rated lower, particularly for models without optional side airbags. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should also be consulted for a more complete picture of safety performance. Keep in mind these ratings are relative to vehicles of the same era. Modern vehicles typically offer far superior safety technology and crash protection. Some models included OnStar as an optional feature providing emergency assistance and vehicle diagnostics.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from approximately $18,000 to $35,000 depending on the trim, cab configuration, engine, and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $15,000, influenced by condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Resale value is impacted by factors like rust, mechanical condition, maintenance history, and overall demand for used trucks. Models with lower mileage and desirable options (like 4WD and crew cabs) tend to command higher prices. The truck's general reliability helps it retain some value.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 are generally moderate, but can vary based on driving record and location. Fuel costs are relatively high, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate to high, depending on the truck's condition and the need for repairs of common issues. Long-term ownership costs can be higher than average due to potential repairs and fuel consumption, so it's not the most economical vehicle to own.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 competes with the Ford F-150, Dodge Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. Performance is comparable across the board, with each offering a range of engine options. In terms of features, the Sierra offered a similar level of equipment to its rivals at the time. Reliability is generally considered good, though each truck has its own potential issues. Price-wise, the Sierra was competitive when new, and used prices are similar to its rivals.
Compared to the Ford F-150, the Sierra might offer a slightly more refined interior, while the F-150 might have a slight edge in towing capacity depending on configuration. The Dodge Ram 1500 often prioritized styling and interior comfort, while the Toyota Tundra was known for its strong reliability.
Alternatives depend on individual priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Tundra might be a slightly better choice. If towing is the primary concern, researching specific F-150 configurations is worthwhile. For a balance of features, performance, and price, the Sierra 1500 remains a solid option. However, any potential buyer should consider the condition of the specific vehicle being considered, regardless of make or model.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 is ideal for individuals needing a capable and reliable pickup truck for work or personal use, who don't require the latest technology. It's worth buying as a used vehicle, provided it's been well-maintained and thoroughly inspected. Look for models with detailed service records and minimal rust. Higher trims (SLE or SLT) offer more comfort and features. Avoid trucks with obvious signs of neglect or deferred maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is strongly recommended to assess potential problems and ensure a worthwhile purchase.

Until we found a mom and pop dealer in the middle of no where I found my red sierra ext cab and I fell in love 0 rust high miles but drove like new and only had 1 owner bought it with 198k and now has 204k and still runs like new I love it deff recommend to anyone just stay away from the 2000 to 2005 silverados they have major issues

Extremely dangerous vehicle

The upper ball joints are way too small for this size vehicle which makes it extremely dangerous. I have had one snap and my whole tire and hub assembly brakes everything went when I was on the highway at highway speed. It's a miracle I did not die, it almost caused the truck to roll and could have been a major accident. I was told that it was a freak accident and was extremely unheard-of but then the other side broke a year later luckily what's on the side streets doing 25 miles an hour. This is a major problem that should have been addressed by the manufacturer and there should have been a recall. I have been a chevy fan my entire life but after almost dying once just to have the same thing happened to me a year later from the same ridiculous issue that Chevy tried to save money on. I will never purchase another Chevrolet in my life
