The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 is a light-duty pickup truck known for its blend of capability and refinement. Part of the fourth generation (2014-2018), it's available in regular, double, and crew cab configurations with various bed lengths. Key trims include Base, SLE, SLT, and the luxurious Denali. New pricing ranged from approximately $28,000 to over $55,000, depending on configuration. It stands out for its upscale interior compared to some competitors and its strong engine options.
The Good

The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 boasts strong performance with powerful engine choices, offering ample towing capacity for practical buyers. What Problems Does the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 often revolve around the 8-speed automatic transmission (specifically the 8L90), particularly rough or erratic shifting, hesitation, and "hard shifts". Some owners have also reported a shuddering sensation. There are reports of transmission failures as well. Oil consumption issues are another concern, primarily with the 5.3L V8 engine. Some owners have noticed excessive oil consumption between oil changes, potentially leading to engine damage if not monitored closely.
Recalls for the 2017 Sierra 1500 have addressed issues such as potential brake pedal separation, software glitches affecting the electronic stability control system, and faulty airbags. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA database to verify any outstanding recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns often circle back to the transmission and oil consumption problems. While some owners experience no issues, these problems can be costly to repair and negatively impact the ownership experience. Other less frequent issues include infotainment system glitches and occasional electrical problems.

How long will the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 can reasonably achieve 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with regular servicing and preventative care. However, the long-term durability is significantly impacted by adherence to maintenance schedules, especially regarding transmission fluid changes and monitoring engine oil levels due to potential oil consumption issues. Weaknesses over time are primarily related to the aforementioned transmission problems and engine oil consumption, which can accelerate wear and potentially require costly repairs if left unaddressed. Rust can also become a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt use.

Negative Owner Reviews
I drove many vehicles over the road Through Time I personally think they went for profit instead of liability of the proper functions of the vehicle
It has been one electronic failure after another now I see through research there a lot of engine failures due to the truck going from 4 to 8 cylinders it impacts the valves and there's many transmission problems that may vary. I had the truck brand new and there's a lot of unexplained malfunctions in the computer that come and go I personally think the computer system is totally a function.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from approximately $28,000 for a base model to over $55,000 for a fully-equipped Denali. Current used market prices range from around $20,000 to $35,000, depending on condition, mileage, trim, and location. The Sierra 1500 depreciates at a moderate rate, similar to other trucks in its class. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, trim level (Denali models retain value better), and the presence of popular options like four-wheel drive and the 6.2L V8 engine. Maintenance is relatively standard, with regular oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections. Repairs can be costly, particularly if transmission or engine issues arise. Long-term ownership costs lean towards the more expensive side due to potential repairs and fuel consumption. It's not the most economical truck to own.

How Does the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 competes directly with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. Performance-wise, the Sierra's engine options are competitive, but the F-150 offers a wider range of engine choices, including more fuel-efficient turbocharged options. In terms of features, the Sierra offers a refined interior, particularly in the Denali trim, but the Ram 1500 arguably provides a more luxurious and comfortable ride. The Tundra is known for its robust reliability, potentially surpassing the Sierra. The Silverado 1500, being mechanically similar to the Sierra, shares many of the same strengths and weaknesses. Price-wise, the Sierra generally falls in the middle of the pack.

Alternatives to consider include:
The **Ford F-150**, for its diverse engine options and advanced technology.
The **Ram 1500**, for its comfortable ride and upscale interior.
The **Toyota Tundra**, for its reputation for reliability. If reliability is a top priority, the Tundra might be a better choice. If a more modern interior and advanced technology are desired, the F-150 or Ram 1500 may be preferable.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Vehicle?

The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 is a good choice for buyers seeking a capable and refined light-duty truck. It's ideal for those who appreciate a comfortable interior and strong engine options. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A used Sierra 1500 can be a good value if it has been well-maintained and inspected for common issues like transmission problems and oil consumption. Higher trims like the SLT or Denali offer more features and comfort. It's recommended to have a pre-purchase inspection and review the vehicle's maintenance history before buying. Consider the Tundra if reliability is paramount, or the F-150 or Ram 1500 for potentially better technology or ride quality, respectively.

Casual driver of this Truck and retired. on March 10, 2022

Beware!

Air conditioner replaced, Valves replaced. Rusted under carriage after rust proofing added? Transmission and diff issue with big knock while driving when engaging between them? They call it normal…. Poor acceleration. Battery charger pad gone in first yr. Not a fuse and they said it would cost over $500. Navigator system was outdated when purchased and they told me it would cost $400 to upgrade… Beware of this truck if you are interested to purchase it. Big transmission issues and they are still trying to say it is a design issue and trying to put it back on the customers.

torque converter transmission issues

I love my 2017 Sierra 1500. however, my truck stays in the shop more than it does out. Now I'm having to replace the torque converter /transmission . this is a very common issue with GMC's and very expensive. unless you have thousands to just blow I wouldn't recommend this beautiful truck.
