Rating: 4.64
Based on 31 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck, part of the second generation Sierra, produced from 2007-2013. It's available in regular, extended, and crew cab configurations with various bed lengths. Key trims include the base model, SLE, SLT, and the luxurious Denali. Original pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $45,000 depending on configuration and options. The Sierra 1500 is popular for its blend of rugged capability and refined interior, offering a comfortable ride and a wide range of engine choices.
The Good

The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 offers robust performance with its range of engine options, and generally good reliability. Comfort is a strong point, especially in higher trims, and the design is classic truck. From a practical standpoint, it offers solid towing capacity and a decent value for the money. Emotionally, it provides the satisfaction of owning a capable and dependable truck.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 include potential issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can lead to oil consumption. Some owners have reported transmission problems, and rust can be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters. The interior, while comfortable, can feel dated compared to newer trucks. Watch out for these potential issues during inspection.

What Problems Does the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 often revolve around the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system on the 5.3L V8 engines. This system can cause excessive oil consumption, leading to potential engine damage if not monitored. Other common issues include transmission problems, such as harsh shifting or slipping, though this isn't widespread. Rust is a concern, particularly on the rocker panels, cab corners, and around the wheel wells, especially in regions with road salt use.
Recalls for the 2010 Sierra 1500 have included issues with the brake pedal assembly and potential problems with the fuel tank. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues. The AFM issue, if not properly addressed with maintenance or a delete kit, can lead to premature engine wear. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and rust prevention measures, is crucial for extending the lifespan of the 2010 Sierra 1500. Some owners have also reported issues with the electronic stability control system, although this is less common.

How long will the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

A 2010 GMC Sierra 1500, with proper maintenance, can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching 250,000-300,000 miles with consistent care. Maintenance habits greatly influence longevity. Regular oil changes (especially to mitigate AFM issues), transmission fluid flushes, and rust prevention are crucial. Long-term durability is generally good, but potential weaknesses include the aforementioned AFM system leading to oil consumption and engine wear, and rust development in vulnerable areas. Properly addressing these issues can significantly extend the truck's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 offered a range of tech, entertainment, and safety features for its time. Base models featured a basic AM/FM radio. Higher trims (SLE and SLT) included CD players, satellite radio, and available Bose audio systems. Navigation was an optional feature.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Available features included StabiliTrak electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and traction control. Rear parking assist was also optional.
Safety features included standard front airbags and side-curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the cab configuration. The Crew Cab version generally received good ratings, while the extended cab had some mixed results. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted crash tests, with the Sierra receiving generally acceptable scores for frontal offset and side-impact tests. The availability of features like electronic stability control and side airbags improved safety, but it's important to note that these were not standard across all trims. Compared to today's vehicles, driver-assistance tech is limited. Keep in mind that technology features and safety ratings are not as robust compared to newer vehicles.

2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from approximately $20,000 for a base model to around $45,000 for a fully-equipped Denali. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, trim, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a decade-old vehicle. Resale value is affected by factors such as mileage, condition (rust is a major factor), engine type (6.2L V8 models hold value better), and trim level (Denali trims command higher prices). Trucks with documented service history also tend to fetch higher prices.

2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 is generally moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typical for a full-size truck. Fuel economy is not its strong suit, particularly with the V8 engines. Maintenance can be moderate, but potential issues like AFM-related oil consumption and rust repair can increase costs. Repair costs can vary; some parts are readily available and affordable, while others can be more expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance and addressing potential issues early.

2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 competes directly with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (its corporate twin), Dodge Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the Sierra's engine options are comparable, though the 6.2L V8 offers a slight edge. Features are similar across the board, with higher trims offering comparable luxury. Reliability is generally good, but the Sierra's AFM system can be a weakness compared to some rivals. The Tundra has a reputation for excellent reliability. Price-wise, the Sierra is usually competitive.
The Ford F-150 offers a wider range of configurations and often boasts slightly better fuel economy in some trims. The Dodge Ram 1500 is known for its comfortable ride. The Toyota Tundra is recognized for its exceptional reliability.
A similar alternative is the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which is mechanically identical to the Sierra. Depending on individual needs, a well-maintained Toyota Tundra might be a better choice for long-term reliability, while the F-150 could be preferable for its broader range of options.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 is ideal for buyers seeking a capable and comfortable full-size pickup at a reasonable price point. It's worth buying *used* if a thorough inspection reveals good mechanical condition and minimal rust. Higher trims like the SLT and Denali offer more creature comforts. Be wary of 5.3L engines with a history of oil consumption related to the AFM system. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic. If you need a reliable and capable truck for work or personal use and are willing to address potential maintenance needs, the 2010 Sierra 1500 can be a good value.

Fair price for truck value

So far I like the truck, time will tell. Motor cars of Gaithersburg has been good to deal with so far, feel they will continue to be a good company to work with and will address any problems that may come up.

I have a love and a hate for this truck

I have the 4.8L 4-speed base model truck with 4x4 extended cab. I got this truck for reliability and for the most part it has pulled through for me so far. It's a ten year old truck with 75k miles and the only major work has been replacing ball joints. O2 sensor, vent solenoid, and battery were also replaced. I like that the 4.8L option doesn't have programming for the 4 cylinder shut off like the 5.3L does. I also prefer my transmissions to have fewer gears as I find feeling the vehicle constantly search for gears while driving is uncomfortable. The truck I have is not a family vehicle, it is a work truck that I wanted for home projects. It's clunky, sometimes it shutters at red lights, it drives like you expect a with truck to drive, but it gets you from point A to point B and starts up and drives as it should every time (knock on wood). The rear cab is too small for any size person to be comfortable but it's nice for storage and to have the 6.5ft bed option. Maintenance has been relatively easy so far although almost nothing has a drain plug besides the engine. I would recommend this model year GMC Sierra as long as it was made in the USA. Steer clear if it was made in Mexico.

Good truck for a good price

The truck is doing fine. It has had a few small things that is to be expected from a used vehicle. We put tires on it because two of them kept going flat overnight and during the day while I was at work. The next morning it wouldn't start because the battery went shot. That's my luck. Like I said nothing that is unusual for a used vehicle.

Start Fresh Cars helped me with a fresh start!

I went into Start Fresh Cars with a low down payment and not so good credit. The owner Mary was able to get me into a vehicle I like with reasonable monthly payments. Everyone there was friendly and I was even offered a slice of pizza as I was there during their lunch hour. They made the buying process painless and fun!!

GM could have done better

GM could have done better on some things. This vehicle has less than 85k miles and the dash is cracked in 2 places and the interior door handles will slide you open where the chrome is popping off. The paint on the outside door handles is coming off too. This one owner vehicle was taken care of and should not have these problems. I would have expected more from GMC. I wish I would have held out for a Tundra.
