Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 represents the first model year of its fourth generation. It's a full-size pickup truck available in regular, extended (Double Cab), and crew cab configurations, with various bed lengths. Key trims include the base Sierra, SLE, SLT, and the luxurious Denali. New pricing ranged from approximately $26,000 to $55,000. Its blend of rugged capability and refined interior, coupled with advanced technology, made it a popular choice for both work and personal use. The Denali trim specifically offered a premium experience, setting it apart.

What Problems Does the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 include transmission issues, specifically harsh or erratic shifting, especially in the 6-speed automatic. Some owners have also reported the "Chevy shake" or "GM shudder", a vibration felt at highway speeds. Oil consumption has been a concern with the 5.3L V8 engine, with some vehicles consuming excessive amounts of oil between changes. There have been recalls related to potential airbag issues and brake vacuum pump failures, which could affect braking performance. The infotainment system, MyLink, has also been a source of complaints related to freezing, unresponsiveness, and Bluetooth connectivity problems. Rust, particularly on the frame and undercarriage, is a concern in areas with heavy salt usage. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for oil consumption issues to worsen over time. It's essential to check the vehicle's history for completed recall repairs and any documented transmission or engine problems before purchasing. Regular maintenance and addressing any early signs of trouble can help mitigate potential long-term reliability concerns.

How long will the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 can realistically achieve 200,000 miles or more. Years of service often depend on driving habits and climate; however, 10-15 years is achievable. Long-term durability hinges on consistent oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing rust concerns. Weaknesses over time include potential transmission degradation, increasing oil consumption, and wear and tear on suspension components. The electrical system can also exhibit issues as the vehicle ages. Regularly inspecting and maintaining these areas will maximize the truck's lifespan.

This truck has almost every bell and whistle I can think of. It has completely exceeded my expectations. It is a smooth ride. It has all of the comforts I could need and more.
Tobythetruck
Truck was just what we wanted, Plenty of room, Leather seats, Power everything. Tow package, Bluetooth, OnStar, Sirrus/XM, Pandora, Sliding rear window. DVD player. 4X4. Locking tailgate.
Negative Owner Reviews
Lea Hanson
Bought this truck in 2021, had 100k on it have had nothing but repairs and problems, have had every major system replaced and or repaired. So far I have had the ac replaced 900, spark plugs and coils 500, ball joints 700, tires 1200, and just had the transmission rebuilt for 4k, now it's in the shop again because the transmission solenoid is broken. I am at my wits end I spent 28k on this truck at the dealership I still owe 16k at this point. Not sure how much longer I can keep up with these repairs. So might need to trade it in. Worst and most expensive car I've ever bought spent over 10k in repairs in 2 years, much higher than the expected 500 to 700 in repairs per year they tell you online. Much higher. I will never recommend this brand and make to anyone.
Dust
The vehicle that I looked at they said it had went to their shop and was checked out. When I looked underneath the vehicle transmission lines were leaking. And they said Leaky lines are OK. But in my experience if you don’t fix this it could cost you a transmission which is thousands of dollars they say it’s not their problem.
Mfdvr007
It does the job, not overly impressed given the amount of $$$ having to spend, hate the transmission shifting. It takes a while for it to downshift. Infotainment system freezes up, have to remove the fuse to reset it. I guess it's impossible to make a good truck these days. I prefer it over Ford or Dodge.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 offered a range of built-in tech and safety features. Entertainment options included a standard AM/FM radio with a 4.2-inch color display, and higher trims featured the MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen. MyLink provided Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone integration (limited), and available navigation. Driver-assistance features were somewhat limited compared to newer vehicles, but options included a rearview camera, park assist, and lane departure warning. Safety features included standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control.
Optional features included a premium Bose sound system, heated and cooled front seats (on higher trims), and a sunroof. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally awarded the 2014 Sierra 1500 four or five stars overall, depending on the cab configuration. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it good ratings in several categories, although some tests resulted in lower ratings. It's important to note that the standard safety equipment was more basic on the lower trims, and advanced safety features were primarily available on higher trim levels or as optional packages.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from approximately $26,000 for a base model to $55,000+ for a fully equipped Denali. Current used market prices vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and trim level, but generally range from $15,000 to $30,000. Depreciation has been moderate, as trucks tend to hold their value relatively well. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), trim level (Denali commands a premium), engine (V8s are generally more desirable), and accident history. Regular maintenance and a clean title significantly improve resale prospects.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 are typically moderate, varying based on driving record and coverage. Fuel costs depend heavily on driving habits and engine choice, with the V8s being less economical than the V6. Maintenance costs are average for a full-size truck, but potential transmission or engine repairs can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high depending on the frequency of repairs. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, but it offers a balance of capability and features.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500's key rivals include the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (its corporate twin), Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the Sierra's engine options are competitive, though the Ford F-150 with its EcoBoost engines offers a slightly different blend of power and efficiency. Feature-wise, the Sierra's MyLink system was comparable to Ford's SYNC, but the Ram 1500 often had a more user-friendly interface.
Reliability is a mixed bag; the Sierra has had some reported transmission and oil consumption issues, while the Toyota Tundra generally enjoys a stronger reputation for long-term reliability. The Ford F-150's reliability is variable depending on the engine. Price-wise, the Sierra is generally in line with its competitors.
Alternatives to consider depend on priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Tundra is a solid choice. If a blend of performance and fuel efficiency is desired, the Ford F-150 with an EcoBoost engine is worth investigating. The Ram 1500 offers a comfortable ride and user-friendly tech, making it another viable option. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is essentially the same truck as the Sierra, so preference usually comes down to styling and available deals.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 is ideal for buyers needing a capable and comfortable full-size truck for work and personal use. It's worth buying used if you find one in good condition with documented maintenance and a clean history. Look for models with the 5.3L V8 engine, as it offers a good balance of power and reliability. The SLE or SLT trims offer a good compromise between features and price. Thoroughly inspect for transmission issues, oil consumption, and rust, and prioritize vehicles that have had recall work completed. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to assess its overall condition before committing to the purchase.

Horrible truck.

It's a decent truck. None worth what they cost.

The headrest sits too far forward, which causes me to lean into the center of the vehicle. It goes into 4 cylinder mode too often and strains the engine, which I frequently remedy by leaving the transmission in 5th gear at lower speeds. Engaging manual mode cause the transmission to downshift, which I don't always want it to do the moment I select manual. It gets good gas mileage for a V-8, I have gotten it up to 22.8 mpg. Interior lights are too dim, but I love the stereo. All in all not bad, but not a powerhouse like my 2008 6.0 was. I don't need all the luxury items, wish they would make more plain trucks and bring the cost down. I use it for work, which apparently is not a choice on this page.

Great truck with some bad

It is a great truck with great capabilities! although i must say, some of the technology in this car has its low points. Center stack tends to not cooperate during bluetooth pairing and the headlights have poor illumination to the point i had to retrofit LED bulbs for better visibility. Overall very comfortable ride and smooth drive

not a Loyal company

The vehicle that I looked at they said it had went to their shop and was checked out. When I looked underneath the vehicle transmission lines were leaking. And they said Leaky lines are OK. But in my experience if you don’t fix this it could cost you a transmission which is thousands of dollars they say it’s not their problem.
