Key trims include the base Sierra, SLE, SLT, and the luxurious Denali. What makes the Sierra popular is its blend of capability, refinement, and available technology. What Problems Does the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 often revolve around the 8-speed automatic transmission (8L90). Owners have complained about harsh shifting, shuddering, and hesitation, especially during low-speed driving. There have been numerous technical service bulletins (TSBs) addressing these issues, but a permanent fix can be elusive. Some owners have also reported oil consumption, particularly with the 5.3L V8 engine. This can be caused by issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. Infotainment system glitches, such as freezing or unresponsive touchscreens, are also common. Recalls for the 2016 model year have addressed issues like potential seat belt cable separation and brake vacuum pump failures. Long-term reliability concerns include potential rust, particularly in areas that use road salt, and wear and tear on suspension components. It's advisable to check the vehicle history for any recall work or TSBs related to the transmission or engine before purchasing a used 2016 Sierra 1500. Regular maintenance, especially transmission fluid changes, is crucial for long-term reliability.

How long will the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Owners who follow recommended service schedules, address issues promptly, and avoid harsh driving conditions typically experience longer lifespans. However, neglecting maintenance, especially transmission fluid changes and oil changes, can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Long-term durability concerns include potential rust, as mentioned earlier, and wear and tear on suspension components, especially in trucks used for heavy towing or off-road driving. The 8-speed transmission and AFM system remain potential weaknesses that can impact long-term reliability.
Positive Owner Reviews

The truck I hope meets my needs. Sharp looking and appeared well maintained by previous owner(s). After having it only three days I do hope the few details I've noticed, the dealer is able to address them as not petty and fix them to satisfaction. I hope to get many years out of it though approaching 50k on the odometer. So far, all satisfied.

Love it ! Pulls my 1700 lb boat like it’s not even there . Great on gas while towing as well . I’d like to have a backup camera but the Bluetooth and CarPlay is cool ..
Nedo
Great ride plenty of room great space for big and tall Everything you could wish for in a truck will give you good gas mileage if you drove in a steady speed
Negative Owner Reviews

We have had our GNC 2016 Sierra 1500 for Less Than 3 years and we are going into our third transmission I think the transmission should have a recall on them
Pissed off purchaser
The truck was great just the people I dealt with were idiots was lied to on the truck for six months and they still have not produced a title a bunch of incompetent idiots
Mark Kennedy
The truck has plenty of room all the way around especially for big guy. It's very comfortable to drive. You do set a little low in the seat. I feel the designers should have positioned the driver a little higher. But it's fine, I do see why they put a backup camera in the truck. The 6 speed transmission, once you get used to it is fine. But I do feel it's a little quirky at times. The side mirrors are great, handling is great, breaking is wonderful, the air conditioner works okay. The stereo sound is average.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 offers a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard on most trims is the GMC IntelliLink infotainment system with a touchscreen display, offering smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (availability may vary depending on production date). Entertainment features include available Bose audio systems. Driver-assistance features can include a rearview camera, lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and front and rear park assist. Safety features consist of standard airbags, antilock brakes, and stability control. Optional features include a driver alert package with lane keep assist and forward collision alert.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the Sierra 1500 Good ratings in several crash tests but Marginal in the small overlap front test. Higher trims often include additional safety features like automatic emergency braking. Base models have fewer tech and safety features than higher trims. Adaptive cruise control was available on higher trim levels. Remember that specific feature availability depends on the trim level and optional packages chosen.

2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from around $27,000 for a base model to over $50,000 for a fully loaded Denali. Current used market prices vary widely depending on mileage, condition, and trim level, but typically range from $20,000 to $35,000. The Sierra 1500 holds its value relatively well compared to some other vehicles, but depreciation is still significant. Factors affecting resale value include the truck's condition, mileage, accident history, and whether it has desirable options like four-wheel drive or a specific engine. Higher trims like the Denali generally command higher resale values.

2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 are typically moderate, depending on the driver's history and coverage levels. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are generally average, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for transmission or engine issues. Long-term ownership costs are moderately high due to fuel consumption, potential repairs, and depreciation. It is not the most economical truck to own, but also not the most costly, falling somewhere in the middle of its class.

2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 competes directly with the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (its corporate sibling), and Toyota Tundra. The Ford F-150 often leads in terms of innovation and fuel economy with its EcoBoost engines. The Ram 1500 typically offers a more comfortable ride due to its coil-spring rear suspension. The Silverado 1500 is very similar to the Sierra, sharing many components but often at a slightly lower price point. The Toyota Tundra is known for its exceptional reliability.
In terms of performance, the Sierra's engine options are competitive, but the 8-speed transmission can be a weak point compared to the rivals' transmissions. Feature-wise, the Sierra offers a good balance, especially in higher trims, though the F-150 may offer more advanced technology. While the Tundra is legendary for reliability, the Sierra's reliability is generally good but with potential transmission issues.
If reliability is your top priority, the Toyota Tundra might be a better choice. If you want the most advanced technology and fuel efficiency, the Ford F-150 is a strong contender. The Ram 1500 offers a more comfortable ride. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a similar alternative if you're looking to save some money.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is a good choice for buyers seeking a capable and refined full-size pickup with a touch of luxury, particularly in the higher trims. It's ideal for those who need a truck for work and occasional family use. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained used model can be a good value, but be sure to thoroughly inspect it for transmission issues and rust. Consider a model with the 6-speed transmission instead of the 8-speed to avoid potential problems. If buying used, a lower mileage SLE or SLT trim can offer a good balance of features and value. Due diligence is key before making a purchase.

Beautiful design , but the worst truck I’ve ever owned .

Beautiful design , but the worst truck I’ve ever owned . First collapsed lifter from the crappy cylinder delete system and then needed a new transmission. All this with 68k miles!!!! xxx!!!!?? My 2005 had 300k and was still running strong. Traded in my 2016 for a tundra!

TRANSMISSION SUCKS!!!!!

I love our truck. The transmission i do not love. We had to spend 5600.00 on a new transmission We didn't even have 80,000 miles on our truck we also had an extended warranty but not two months after this run out the transmission went out. I believe according to other reviews I have read that GMC knew this transmission was trash and mass produce it anyway. i will therefore tell everyone that has one that they better watch out for the transmission. and even ask I will tell anyone not to buy this or anything GMC.

My 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT All Terrain - Love it!

I've owned this GMC Sierra 1500 All Terrain since it was 8 months old. With the exception of two warranty issues (failing power brake vacuum pump and transmission electrical harness), I have been totally happy with this truck. Up until now, my 1996 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado with it's 5.7L Vortec engine was my favorite truck of all time, this GMC (5.3L LS engine, 8 speed automatice) has earned the top spot now of my all time favorite truck. It is comfortable to drive, and runs as good as the day I bought it over 5+ years ago. I've got 71.5K miles on it. My biggest issue is I wished it had the 6.2L engine for better towing capabilities. Other than that ... love this truck.

I've had the truck a month, and so far so good!

It's exactly what I was looking for; used but not too used, low miles, good looking but not too many bells and whistles, and didn't need any work.

Big and Beautiful

I am a big fan of cupholders, this will make or break a deal for me. It could use more, but has a sufficient amount for the normal person. Beautiful body style and comfy.

awesome truck

love this truck, color, styling, fuel economy, comfort and how quiet it is. I have owned many general motors vehicles and I only had 1 major issue. That being my 2005 GMC SIERRA. Transmission went, covered by the warranty. The 2016 is by far my favorite. Love the truck!!!

First Lifted truck I've ever owned

The truck I hope meets my needs. Sharp looking and appeared well maintained by previous owner(s). After having it only three days I do hope the few details I've noticed, the dealer is able to address them as not petty and fix them to satisfaction. I hope to get many years out of it though approaching 50k on the odometer. So far, all satisfied.

Awesome truck for the money

Its a 4 door, 4x4, decently powered, full sized truck at a good price! What more can you ask for? That and its really comfortable...for a truck that is.
