2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Review: A Long-Lasting Half Ton Truck With Luxury Features

Rating: 4.32
Based on 71 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck, part of the second generation (2007-2013). Available in regular, extended, and crew cab configurations with various bed lengths. Key trims include Work Truck, SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. It's popular for its blend of capability, comfort, and available luxury features within a work-focused truck. When new, pricing ranged from approximately $22,000 to $45,000, depending on configuration and trim.
The Good

The 2012 Sierra 1500 offers a range of powerful engines for solid performance and towing capacity, appealing to practical buyers. Known for relative reliability compared to some competitors. Higher trims provide a comfortable ride and upscale interior. Its classic truck design is a visually appealing and emotionally satisfying choice. Decent value for the capabilities provided.

The Bad

The 2012 Sierra 1500 can suffer from the "Chevy shake," a vibration issue at highway speeds. Fuel economy, especially with the larger engines, is not its strong suit. Some owners report issues with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) system. Watch for rust, especially in areas with road salt. Interior plastics in lower trims can feel cheap.

2012 GMC Sierra 1500: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options:
    • 4.3L V6: Approximately 195 hp
    • 4.8L V8: Approximately 302 hp

    • 6.2L V8: Approximately 403 hp
  • Horsepower: Ranging from 195 hp to 403 hp depending on engine.
  • Fuel Economy: Varies significantly by engine and drivetrain. Expect 15-20 mpg combined for V8s, potentially better with the V6.

  • Towing Capacity: Ranging from 5,000 lbs to over 10,000 lbs depending on engine, cab configuration, and options.
  • Trim Level Features:
    • Work Truck: Basic vinyl seating, AM/FM radio, manual windows and locks.

What Problems Does the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 include the "Chevy shake" or vibration issue, particularly noticeable at highway speeds. This is often attributed to driveline or suspension components. The Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, designed to improve fuel economy by deactivating cylinders, has been known to cause oil consumption issues and potential engine damage in the long run. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas where road salt is used, affecting the frame, body panels, and brake lines. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, including rough shifting or complete failure. Recalls for the 2012 Sierra 1500 have addressed issues such as potential brake light failures, issues with the power steering system, and potential problems with the airbag system. Long-term reliability concerns center around the AFM system, rust, and potential transmission issues. Earlier models (2007-2009) are particularly susceptible to the "Chevy shake" and AFM-related problems, but these issues can still manifest in the 2012 model year, albeit potentially less frequently.

How long will the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service with proper care. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing rust promptly are crucial. Long-term durability is generally good, but the AFM system remains a potential weakness. The transmission may require attention after 150,000 miles. Suspension components, especially ball joints and tie rod ends, may need replacement over time. Rust prevention is key to extending the vehicle's lifespan.

Time Traveler
Time Traveler 6 minutes ago (edited) I have a GMC 1500 , Denali , Fully loaded , Crew Cab , short bed . While all the review Sites listed this GMC Industrial Grade Truck , at 4.3 to 4.6 rating out of 5 . My AWD front trans gear box went out in less than 33,000 miles , took three trips to one of our area highest rated dealerships to Fix Front Gear box and get the Seal to stop leaking ( all over my Paved Drive way ) I just passed 36,000 miles and the dash board has cracked , yeah Quality built industrial Grade , ( my Butt ) The specialty chrome wheels are peeling off chrome like a old house , painted in cheap paint . The truck has never DONE A decent days work in its life ! Been babied , pampered , well careful . Highest grade Gas , K & N air filter , Highest graded synthetic oil , yet Gas mileage still isn't what is advertised . If you polish and Wax the Chrome Wheels which I do regularly , you have to wear protective gloves or the peeling chrome will cut you like a razor knife . Was A GM loyalist for most my life not any more ! , Quality has gone down , materials used has been greatly cheapened . Will be getting rid of it sooner than later. Such a shame really like the looks , and comfort . Had a Silverado before this, bought in 2004 LT Z71 pkg , traded it with 134,000 miles. Care for it like this GMC Denali , no real problems at all and used it to pull and haul all kinda of stuff . Warning Buy Be Where !!!!!! GMC MOTTO Industrial Grade is just a slogan , its definitely not performance wise JMO

This truck is perfect for your daily driver, its also very good for work, I currently use it on lease roads, and long highway travels. Quiet Interior, quiet engine.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

For safety, standard features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, and traction control. Side curtain airbags were also standard on most models. Driver-assistance features were limited, with options like rear parking sensors available on some trims.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary depending on the cab configuration. 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from approximately $22,000 for a base Work Truck to $45,000+ for a fully-equipped Denali. Currently, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $25,000, depending on condition, mileage, trim, and location. Depreciation has been significant, but trucks generally hold their value better than cars. Factors affecting resale value include: low mileage, excellent condition (especially no rust), desirable options (like the 6.2L engine and 4x4), and a clean title. Well-maintained Sierras in popular trims like the SLT and Denali command higher prices.

2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 are generally moderate. Fuel costs can be high, especially with V8 engines. Maintenance is relatively affordable, with readily available parts. However, repairs can be costly if major components like the transmission or engine fail. Long-term ownership costs are moderate to high, depending on maintenance habits and potential repairs. It is not the most economical vehicle to own, particularly regarding fuel consumption and potential repairs related to the AFM system.

2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 competes with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (its corporate sibling), Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. The F-150 often offered slightly better fuel economy and a wider range of innovative features. The Silverado is very similar to the Sierra in performance and reliability, often coming down to styling preference. The Ram 1500 typically had a more comfortable ride and a more refined interior. The Tundra is known for its excellent reliability.
In terms of performance, the Sierra's engine options are competitive, but the F-150's EcoBoost engines offered a compelling combination of power and efficiency. Features were generally comparable across the board, although the F-150 often had more advanced tech options. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Tundra generally outperforms the Sierra, while the Ram has had some reliability concerns. Price-wise, the Sierra is typically in the middle of the pack.
Alternatives to consider include the Ford F-150 for better fuel economy and features or the Toyota Tundra for superior reliability. The Silverado 1500 is a very similar alternative, often available at a slightly lower price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 is a solid choice for buyers needing a capable and comfortable full-size truck for work or personal use. It's best suited for those who prioritize a blend of power, towing capacity, and available luxury features. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained used model, particularly an SLT or Denali trim with lower mileage and a thorough maintenance history, represents a good value. Avoid trucks with known "Chevy shake" issues or excessive rust. If budget allows, consider a newer model with improved fuel economy and technology.

Good truck if you do the right things

The best thing about this truck is the fuel economy. Bought brand new in 2012 and when the truck hit 35000KM the fuel economy improved. I had heard about that before but didn't believe it. Beware, these trucks are known for transmission shutter and shifting problems like every GM product ever. Do not flush the transmission ever. Pull the pan and replace the oil three times every 40 of 50 KM. It costs a bit but the tranny will shift much better and last. The door handles are garbage. They cost 25 bucks on Amazon. Changed two now. Changed washer fluid sensor. Front breaks and rotors are cheap. Replace with high end aftermarket when they go...and they will. Over 200 Km on this vehicle now. Motor is strong and the truck is still holding up well. I would give it a 5 if GM would get their transmission issues fixed one day. A little higher quality front end parts would put them over the top. Good ride, roomy and comfortable.

Perfect pickup for my needs.

It's a great truck period. It has a short enough wheelbase to turn in a short radius, plenty of power, very comfortable. Been looking for this truck for a long time.
