What Problems Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Have?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while a pinnacle of luxury, has some frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. Air suspension malfunctions are common, often requiring expensive repairs or replacements of air struts and compressors. Electrical issues, impacting the complex infotainment system, sensors, and driver-assistance features, are also frequently reported. Oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gaskets and rear main seal, are another recurring concern, especially as the car ages. Transmission issues, although less frequent, have been reported, especially with the 7-speed automatic transmission found in some models.

Recalls for the 2014 S-Class included issues related to the seat belt pre-tensioners, fuel pump failures, and potential brake system malfunctions. Long-term reliability hinges heavily on consistent and meticulous maintenance. Models with higher mileage or those that haven't had regular servicing are more likely to exhibit these problems. Pre-purchase inspections should focus on the air suspension, electrical system, and potential oil leaks to avoid significant future expenses.

How long will the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class last?

A well-maintained 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, achieving this longevity depends heavily on consistent maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses emerge over time in the air suspension system, which is prone to leaks and failures. Electrical components can also become problematic, and plastic trim pieces may degrade with age and sun exposure. Regular servicing and preventative maintenance are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of this vehicle.

Negative Owner Reviews
Skeptical
The positive five star reviews on the Mercedes S Class appear to be written by professional salesmen. They hit all the bases too thoroughly and sound too polished. Don't fall for it. Mercedes has never been known for it's reliability and yours, should you buy one, will be no different. If money is no object then sure, indulge yourself. They're beautiful, fast and prestigious. But don't count on value or reliability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class boasts impressive built-in tech. The COMAND infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display offers navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and media integration. The Burmester surround sound system provides exceptional audio quality.

Standard driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and Pre-Safe, which prepares the car for an imminent collision. Optional features include a night vision system, a surround-view camera, and active lane keeping assist. The S-Class also offers massaging seats for enhanced comfort.

Safety features are comprehensive, including multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The 2014 S-Class received strong crash-test ratings. The NHTSA gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" designation, indicating excellent performance in crash tests. Overall, the 2014 S-Class excels in technology, entertainment, driver assistance, and safety, providing a luxurious and secure driving experience.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class ranged from approximately $95,000 to over $200,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $20,000 to $40,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The S-Class experiences significant depreciation, particularly in the early years. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and comprehensive maintenance records command higher prices. High-performance AMG models tend to hold their value slightly better than the standard S550.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a costly vehicle to own long-term. Insurance premiums are high due to its value and performance. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the AMG models. Maintenance and repairs are expensive, as parts and labor are premium-priced. Air suspension repairs, electrical issues, and engine component replacements can lead to substantial bills. While not economical, the S-Class offers unparalleled luxury and features, justifying the higher ownership costs for some buyers.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class competes with the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, and Lexus LS. In terms of performance, the S-Class, particularly the AMG models, offers comparable or superior acceleration and handling. Features are largely similar across these luxury sedans, with each offering advanced technology and opulent interiors. However, reliability is where the S-Class often falls short compared to the Lexus LS, which is known for its dependability. The Audi A8 offers a more modern and tech-focused interior, while the BMW 7 Series delivers a sportier driving experience. In terms of price, the S-Class is generally competitive, but maintenance and repair costs can be higher than some rivals.

Alternatives to the 2014 S-Class include the Lexus LS for buyers prioritizing reliability, the Audi A8 for those seeking cutting-edge technology, or the BMW 7 Series for a more engaging driving experience. Depending on individual priorities, these alternatives may offer a better value proposition.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is ideal for buyers seeking unparalleled luxury, advanced technology, and powerful performance. It's a worthwhile purchase, but only if potential owners are prepared for potentially high maintenance and repair costs. Buying used is generally recommended due to significant depreciation, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Lower-mileage examples with comprehensive service records are preferable. Consider the S550 for a balance of luxury and performance, or the AMG models for those prioritizing driving thrills. Those prioritizing reliability might consider alternatives like the Lexus LS.

Most comfortable, luxurious car I have ever owned

This vehicle is a work of art and makes driving an experience like none other. It's like riding on a cloud; no driver fatigue, no road noise, and concert quality sound system. Also is a beautiful, powerful piece of machinery crafted of the finest materials. Everyone should experience the quality of a Mercedes S-class at least once in their life; if even just to test drive.

I LOVE MY NEW CAR!!

I came in to Auto Holding with my wife last week. I was just looking at a few GL 550’s. I had no intention to purchase that day. Robert was my salesman and he was awesome. Before I knew it, I got the price I wanted for my trade and I drove off with my new car. Thank you for an easy experience.
