What Problems Does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Have?

While the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is generally reliable, some frequently reported problems and potential long-term reliability concerns exist. One common area of concern revolves around the complex electronics system. Owners have reported glitches with the MBUX infotainment system, including screen freezes, software errors, and connectivity issues. The advanced driver-assistance systems, while impressive, can also experience malfunctions, such as lane-keeping assist errors or adaptive cruise control inconsistencies.

The air suspension system, designed for a smooth and comfortable ride, is another area to monitor. Over time, components of the air suspension can fail, leading to costly repairs. Some owners have reported issues with the system leaking air or failing to maintain proper ride height.

Recalls are important to track. Check the NHTSA website for any recalls related to the 2022 S-Class. These recalls often address safety-related concerns and should be addressed promptly by a Mercedes-Benz dealer.

Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance. Adhering to the recommended service schedule and using genuine Mercedes-Benz parts is crucial. Neglecting maintenance can exacerbate existing issues and lead to more significant problems down the road. The complexity of the vehicle also means that even routine maintenance can be expensive compared to less technologically advanced cars.

How long will the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, its long-term durability is strongly tied to consistent maintenance. Weaknesses over time often relate to the complex electronics and air suspension. Proper care, including timely servicing of the air suspension components and software updates, is essential to avoid premature failures. Neglecting scheduled maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan and increase repair costs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is packed with cutting-edge technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is the 12.8-inch OLED center display, running the MBUX infotainment system. It offers natural language understanding, smartphone integration, and a wide range of connected services. Entertainment features include a premium Burmester sound system and optional rear-seat entertainment screens.

Standard driver-assistance features are comprehensive, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and a surround-view camera. Optional features include active steering assist, evasive steering assist, and route-based speed adaptation.

Safety features extend beyond driver assistance. It includes multiple airbags, a reinforced safety cell, and advanced sensors to detect and mitigate potential collisions. Optional features, such as the Pre-Safe Impulse Side system, can prepare occupants for an impending side impact.

Crash-test ratings from agencies like the NHTSA and IIHS provide further insights into the S-Class's safety performance. Check these sources for the latest available ratings, as they can vary. Generally, the S-Class performs very well in crash tests, reflecting Mercedes-Benz's commitment to safety.

2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class had a starting MSRP of around $110,000, with higher trims and options pushing the price well above $150,000. Used market prices currently range from approximately $75,000 to $120,000, depending on mileage, condition, and equipment. The S-Class depreciates significantly in the first few years. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options. Models with fewer miles, a clean Carfax report, and popular options like the Executive Rear Seat Package command higher prices.

2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its value and repair costs. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engine. Maintenance is expensive, requiring specialized technicians and genuine parts. Repairs, particularly for the complex electronics and air suspension, can be very costly. Overall, the S-Class is far from economical and caters to buyers who prioritize luxury over affordability.

2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class competes with vehicles like the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, and Lexus LS. In terms of performance, the S-Class offers comparable engine options and driving dynamics. Feature-wise, it boasts an extensive array of technology and luxury amenities, often surpassing its rivals. However, reliability is where the S-Class can fall slightly behind, particularly compared to the Lexus LS.

In terms of price, the S-Class is generally in line with its German competitors, but more expensive than the Lexus LS. The BMW 7 Series offers a similar blend of performance and luxury, while the Audi A8 provides a more understated and technologically advanced experience.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • BMW 7 Series: Similar performance and luxury, arguably sportier handling.
  • Audi A8: Cutting-edge technology and a refined interior.
  • Lexus LS: Exceptional reliability and a more value-oriented proposition.
  • Genesis G90: A strong contender offering comparable luxury and features at a lower price point.

Choosing the best alternative depends on individual priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Lexus LS is a strong choice. For a sportier driving experience, the BMW 7 Series may be preferable. The Genesis G90 provides luxury at a more accessible price.

It's worth buying if you value the prestige and experience it offers and are prepared for the higher ownership costs. Consider buying used to mitigate initial depreciation, but thoroughly inspect the vehicle and review its maintenance history. The S 500 offers a good balance of performance and efficiency, while the S 580 provides a more powerful and luxurious experience. Ensure any potential recalls have been addressed before purchasing.

Be careful what you ask for.

Absolutely the worst new car experience I've ever had - and I've had plenty. Overwhelming electronic nannies, fussy controls meant for the hands of small children and impossible to distinguish a true malfunction from some unknown 'safety feature' intervention. Zero support from the dealer nor from MBUSA. Love my new Maserati Quattroporte Trofeo.

A Wonderful Overall Experience

I just picked up my S580 Lux-Line in Emerald Green over Sienna Brown, and I am absolutely thrilled with the purchase. I have owned five S-Class models since 2010, including this new one, and I can say this is the best iteration yet from an overall perspective. While I still think the W222 was the best-looking (especially my 2019 S560 with the refreshed look and AMG pack), this new one does not disappoint at all. The Emerald Green is stunning in the sunlight, my favorite color yet. And the interior is on another level from a luxury and tech standpoint. I loved the interiors of all the S-Class models I've owned, but this current one is my favorite. The seats are super supportive, and the vast amount of tech is amazing. The new infotainment screen takes time to learn and get used to, but I feel the "Hey, Mercedes" function makes doing small things like putting in a Navigation request easier than going through the main screen. From a driving perspective, the ride is the best yet, just like gliding on a cloud. I've been lucky to have driven Bentley's and Rolls-Royce's in my lifetime, and this ride is as close as I've seen the S-Class come to being even with those vehicles on this front. And, the V8 is plenty punchy when needed, so it can be a fun vehicle to take on windy roads if you so desire. Overall, a wonderful vehicle and a bargain when you compare it to the other super-luxury vehicles on sale. I'm looking forward to the next few years of owning such an awesome car.
