Rating: 4.34

Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2004 Toyota Corolla is a compact car, part of the ninth generation (2003-2008) known for its reliability and fuel efficiency. Available as a sedan, it offered trims like CE, S, and LE. Its popularity stems from its reputation for dependability and low running costs. New pricing ranged approximately from $13,000 to $16,000, but used prices are significantly lower today. The Corolla stands out as a practical and economical choice.
The Good

The 2004 Toyota Corolla excels in reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and simple design offer a sense of ease and dependability. While not a performance car, it provides adequate power for daily driving, and its strong resale value offers peace of mind. It's a sensible and trustworthy choice.

The Bad

The 2004 Toyota Corolla's weaknesses include its uninspired interior and relatively basic features, even in higher trims. Some owners have reported issues with oil consumption, especially in later years. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters. Also, the automatic transmission can sometimes exhibit shift issues as it ages. Regular maintenance is key.

What Problems Does the 2004 Toyota Corolla Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Toyota Corolla include excessive oil consumption, particularly as the engine ages. This issue isn't specific to the 2004 model year but is a common concern with the 1ZZ-FE engine used in Corollas from this era. Owners should regularly check and top off the oil level. Another common issue is related to the automatic transmission; some owners report erratic shifting or slipping, particularly in high-mileage vehicles. Regular transmission fluid changes can help mitigate this. Rust is a potential problem, especially in areas where salt is used on the roads during winter. Check the undercarriage, rocker panels, and wheel wells for signs of corrosion.

Recalls for the 2004 Corolla have included issues related to airbags, specifically the Takata airbag inflators, which could rupture and send shrapnel into the cabin. Owners should check the NHTSA website to ensure their vehicle has had all necessary recall repairs completed. Long-term reliability is generally good, but these specific issues should be addressed to maximize the vehicle's lifespan. Some owners have also reported issues with the mass airflow sensor, which can cause poor engine performance.

How long will the 2004 Toyota Corolla last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Toyota Corolla can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Regular oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles), timely transmission fluid changes, and addressing cooling system issues are crucial. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses include potential oil consumption and rust, particularly in colder climates. The longevity of the suspension components and the catalytic converter should also be monitored as the car ages. Proper care ensures the Corolla remains a dependable vehicle for many years.

This car drove amazing i can't believe how great it drove considering the year of the vehicle. Who ever owned it before took care of it.
Amy S
This car was a tank in winter and gave me great gas mileage, I drove it 400,169 miles and loved it! I am currently in the process of buying my next car from them.
sir h
I maintain it by doing what needs to be done and will have it until it no longer operates!! Have also kept up with recalls and the usual tire, battery, windshield wiper, etc., changes too!
Negative Owner Reviews

fairly good but not so reliable for personal use to commute long distance. corolla ordinarily would have been a great car but this is not offering the features and durability i want.

Bought new in 2003 and still going strong at 130k miles. Burns no oil, no leak what so ever. Never had any major issues. Replaced O2 sensor, one of the front bearings, water pump - I think that's all except tires, breaks, spark plugs etc. Only complaint would be the engine vibration felt on the steering wheel. Seems like I will drive this car 10+ more years (unless I want to buy a new one)

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Toyota Corolla offers relatively basic tech and entertainment features compared to modern cars. Standard equipment included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might have offered an upgraded audio system with more speakers. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available at the time.

Safety features included front airbags as standard equipment. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available as an option. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not available on the 2004 Corolla. Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) show that the 2004 Corolla received good ratings in frontal offset crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 4-star rating for driver and passenger in frontal crash tests, and 5-star ratings for side impact protection.

Optional features depended on the trim level. LE models often included power windows, power door locks, and cruise control. The S trim added sporty aesthetic features but didn't significantly upgrade the tech offerings. In summary, the 2004 Corolla focused on basic safety and functionality rather than advanced technology, prioritizing reliability and affordability over cutting-edge features.

2004 Toyota Corolla Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Toyota Corolla's price ranged from approximately $13,000 to $16,000 depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and location. The Corolla has depreciated significantly over the years, as expected for a vehicle of its age. However, its strong reputation for reliability has helped it retain its value better than some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, mechanical condition, absence of rust, and a clean title. Models with documented maintenance records command higher prices.

2004 Toyota Corolla Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Toyota Corolla is very economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and popularity. Fuel costs are minimal because of its excellent fuel economy. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with readily available and affordable parts. Repairs are generally infrequent and straightforward. Long-term ownership costs are low, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious buyers. Expect to spend more on maintenance as the vehicle ages, but overall, it remains a cost-effective option.

2004 Toyota Corolla Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Toyota Corolla is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Toyota Corolla Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Toyota Corolla competes with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Nissan Sentra, and Ford Focus. In terms of reliability, the Corolla and Civic are generally considered top choices, often surpassing the Mazda3, Sentra, and Focus. However, the Mazda3 offers a sportier driving experience. The Nissan Sentra provides a bit more interior space, while the Ford Focus offers a wider range of body styles (including a hatchback and wagon) that the Corolla lacks.

The Corolla's features are generally basic but functional, prioritizing simplicity over luxury. Performance-wise, the Corolla is adequate for daily driving but not particularly exciting. Pricing is competitive within its class, especially on the used market.

Alternatives to the 2004 Corolla include the Honda Civic, which offers similar reliability and fuel efficiency, and the Mazda3 for buyers seeking a more engaging driving experience. For those needing more space, the Nissan Sentra is a viable option. If cargo space is a priority, considering a hatchback or wagon version of the Ford Focus might be beneficial. Ultimately, the Corolla's strengths lie in its reliability and low running costs, making it a practical choice, but buyers should consider their priorities and test drive competitors before making a decision.

The 2004 Toyota Corolla is an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliable and economical transportation. It's ideal for students, commuters, or anyone prioritizing low running costs and dependability over performance or luxury. It's generally worth buying used, provided it has been well-maintained and shows no signs of significant rust or engine issues. Look for models with documented maintenance records. The specific trim is less important than the overall condition of the vehicle. Avoid examples with excessive oil consumption or transmission problems. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Its inherent reliability makes it a worthwhile purchase for those who need a dependable, no-frills car.

600,000 miles and still no problems

It is 2023, and I've been driving this car for 19 years with no problems. It has well over 600,000 miles on it, but I wouldn't know because the odometer maxed out at 299,999 back in 2013.

Corolla is a great car on February 24, 2021

Best car I have ever owned.

I have owned several new cars. My family bought it new, then my son bought a new BMW. He liked his 2004 corolla so much and gave it to me. It had 60,000 miles and now 167,000 miles. It is trouble free and great gas economy. Best was 47mpg back from Vermont to Long Island at 50 mph not cruise control because of fog. I will consider selling when it has 250,000 miles but not before that.

Good car

If you want something that is low maintenance and starts every time, this is the kind of car you want. My car has never left me stranded anywhere and it barely costs me anything in maintenance costs. Plus the gas mileage is great too

I maintain it by doing what needs to be done and will have it until it no longer operates!! Have also kept up with recalls and the usual tire, battery, windshield wiper, etc., changes too!

Most reliable car I’ve owned

Great car and made many successful long distance journeys over the years. It made me a Toyota lover for life and the only reason the car is out of my possession is because someone totaled it out. It kept me safe and unharmed though so I would definitely recommend!
