Rating: 4.65
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The Toyota Corolla has a long and storied history as a reliable and practical compact car. The 2019 model year represents the end of the eleventh generation (E170/E180). It's available as a sedan. Key trims include L, LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. Its popularity stems from its reputation for dependability, fuel efficiency, and affordability. The 2019 Corolla's original MSRP ranged approximately from $19,000 to $23,000.
The Good

The 2019 Toyota Corolla excels in reliability and fuel efficiency, making it a sensible choice. It offers a comfortable ride and a reputation for longevity. Emotionally, owners appreciate its simple, dependable nature, while practically, it's a budget-friendly and worry-free option for daily commuting.

The Bad

The 2019 Corolla's weaknesses include its somewhat uninspired driving experience and limited rear passenger space. The engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Some owners find the interior design bland. Watch out for potential issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in higher mileage examples, although problems are rare.

What Problems Does the 2019 Toyota Corolla Have?

The 2019 Toyota Corolla generally enjoys strong reliability, but some issues have been reported. One of the more common complaints involves the continuously variable transmission (CVT), with some owners reporting unusual noises or hesitation, especially at higher mileage. However, these cases are relatively rare. Minor issues reported include infotainment system glitches (Bluetooth connectivity problems) and occasional issues with the air conditioning system. There have been a few recalls issued for the 2019 Corolla, primarily related to the fuel pump which could potentially cause the engine to stall, and airbag inflators. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability is generally excellent, but regular maintenance, especially fluid changes for the CVT, is essential to maximize its lifespan. While the 2019 model year doesn't exhibit widespread, catastrophic issues, preventative maintenance is key to avoiding potential problems down the road. Checking owner forums can provide more specific insights into individual experiences, but the overall consensus remains positive regarding reliability.

How long will the 2019 Toyota Corolla last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2019 Toyota Corolla can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 10-15 years of service. Toyotas are renowned for their longevity, and the Corolla is no exception. However, neglecting maintenance like oil changes, CVT fluid changes (every 60,000 miles recommended), and regular inspections can shorten its lifespan. Over time, potential weaknesses include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for rust in regions with harsh winters, and eventual replacement of components like the water pump and alternator. Proper care and timely repairs are critical to maximizing the car's lifespan.

In 1974 I went to work at a Toyota Dealership in Casper, WY. I had just went through a year of Votech on repair. Thinking back 50 years since then my first choice of dependable cars is Toyota filled by Honda then Nissan. Today I own a 2019 Corolla, 1997 Buick, 1971 Datsun 240Z, and a 1953 Chevy Pickup. I gave my 2003 Corolla to my son when I bought the 2019. Working on restoring the Z car with Rust repair. I have owned lots of different import cars in my life. The Toyota line is what I prefer to drive the 2019 I have only had to do the 5000 mile scheduled oil change and rotate tires ,as when I bought it only 6,700 miles and currently 34,000 trouble free miles. The 2003 I bought with 25,000 miles and it currently has 180,000 with scheduled oil change and rotate tires with only repairs were an alternator, wheel bearing, and cruise control part under the steering wheel. To me 150K for 03 car and 28k on the 19 Corolla is an excellent record! Oh I forgot my wife lost a key so we are down to 1 key as the frigging cost for replacement key is ridiculous!

This car was on excellent conditions, and very reliable for being a used car but it drive and look like a new car. Recommended to everyone

Do not recommend. Flimsey, chinsey, low quality. Don't know What the Toyota hype is but this product is junk. Felt very unsafe. Would be afraid to put family in it. Was a big mistake.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Toyota Corolla includes a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system (7-inch on higher trims) with Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port. Optional features included integrated navigation on higher trims, and access to the Toyota Entune app suite (which is now outdated).
Driver-Assistance and Safety: All 2019 Corollas come standard with Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P), a suite of driver-assistance features including:
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
Higher trims also offered Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The 2019 Corolla received excellent crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick, with good ratings in all crashworthiness tests. The standard inclusion of TSS-P significantly contributes to its safety profile.

2019 Toyota Corolla Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Toyota Corolla had a starting MSRP of around $19,000, with higher trims reaching approximately $23,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $14,000 to $20,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Corolla holds its value relatively well due to its reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices. Factors affecting resale value include the car's history (accidents, maintenance records), location (demand varies regionally), and overall market conditions. Depreciation is slower compared to some of its competitors.

2019 Toyota Corolla Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Toyota Corolla is remarkably economical to own. Insurance costs are generally low due to its safety ratings and non-sporty image. Fuel costs are also low, especially with the LE Eco trim. Maintenance costs are predictable, with readily available and affordable parts. Repairs are infrequent, and the car's reliability reduces the likelihood of unexpected expenses. Long-term ownership costs are significantly lower than average for its class, making it a smart choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2019 Toyota Corolla Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Toyota Corolla is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Toyota Corolla Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2019 Toyota Corolla competes with the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra, and Nissan Sentra. The Corolla excels in reliability compared to most rivals, often surpassing the Nissan Sentra and Hyundai Elantra. While the Honda Civic and Mazda3 offer more engaging driving experiences, the Corolla prioritizes comfort and fuel efficiency. The Hyundai Elantra often boasts more features for the price, but the Corolla's reputation for longevity is a significant advantage. In terms of performance, the Mazda3 is a clear winner with its superior handling and available engine options. The Honda Civic also provides a more modern and refined driving experience. However, the Corolla's standard Toyota Safety Sense-P suite is a strong selling point. If driving enjoyment is a priority, the Mazda3 or Honda Civic are better choices. If maximizing value and features is key, the Hyundai Elantra is worth considering. For sheer reliability and low running costs, the 2019 Toyota Corolla remains a top contender. The Subaru Impreza offers standard all-wheel drive, making it a good alternative for those needing extra traction.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla a Good Hatchback?

The 2019 Toyota Corolla is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable, fuel-efficient, and safe compact car. It's a great choice for commuters, first-time car owners, and those prioritizing practicality over performance. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, given its strong reliability and relatively low depreciation. Look for well-maintained examples with complete service records. While the SE trim offers slightly sportier styling, the LE or XLE trims provide a better balance of features and comfort for most buyers. Avoid examples with a history of accidents or neglected maintenance. For a worry-free and dependable transportation solution, the 2019 Corolla is a solid option.

Does not disappoint

I’ve owned several Toyotas over the years from a 4 Runner to an Avalon onto several Camrys. Now in my later years, I needed a smaller car, easily handleable, and 35+mpg plus be reliable. The Corolla delivers. Not a speed demon or a car you drive like it’s on rails but does exactly what I was expecting. A great retirement unit for running errands and 100 mile trips.

Bad experience !

15 days after I bought the car, I was heading to work and I received a phone call from my wife that the car it won’t start I don’t know why! And then she requested a neighbor a jump starter to start the car. Later on I took the car for battery testing and it failed. I went to three locations, I couldn’t believe what happened.because, It Has only 24,000 mileage, with Toyota‘s original battery on it.then the results came bad battery! So, I ended up buying a new one.pathetic!!!

Speed control

I have to agree with another review. Yes the cruise control needs to be addressed. The car WILL SPEED UP 5MPH BEFORE IT DOWNSHIFTS. i spoke to a Toyota mechanic. He stated it was the band transmission. NOT THE CRUISE CONTROL. Who pays the ticket when I get stopped doing 60 in a 45. Going over an overpass... Think. Up hill. Fast. Down.
