2013 Toyota Corolla Review: A Small Car Ready For A Redesign

Rating: 4.48
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan, part of the 10th generation (2008-2013). Key trims include the L, LE, S, and XLE. Known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, the Corolla appeals to budget-conscious buyers. Its straightforward design and reputation for longevity make it a popular choice. Pricing ranged from around $16,000 to $20,000 when new.
The Good

The 2013 Corolla excels in reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. It offers a comfortable ride and a spacious interior for its class. While its design isn't particularly exciting, it's inoffensive and reliable. The Corolla's value proposition is strong due to its low running costs and strong resale value, offering peace of mind.

The Bad

The 2013 Corolla's weaknesses include its uninspired handling and acceleration. The interior materials can feel cheap, and the base L trim is sparsely equipped. Watch out for excessive oil consumption, a common issue in some Toyotas of this era. Also, inspect for rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Check the transmission for smooth shifting.

2013 Toyota Corolla: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine
  • Horsepower: 132 hp
  • Fuel Economy:
    • L/LE/S: 27 mpg city / 34 mpg highway (automatic)
    • L/LE: 26 mpg city / 34 mpg highway (manual)
    • XLE: similar to L/LE/S automatic
  • 0-60 Times: Around 10 seconds
  • Towing Capacity: Not recommended or rated for towing
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • L: Standard features include air conditioning, power windows and locks, a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and auxiliary audio jack, and stability control.
    • LE: Adds features like keyless entry, variable intermittent windshield wipers, and upgraded interior trim. Some LE models may have alloy wheels.
    • S: Sportier appearance with a rear spoiler, sport seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. May also include fog lights and unique interior accents.
    • XLE: More luxurious features such as automatic climate control, a premium sound system, and upgraded upholstery.
  • Additional Notes: All trims come standard with front-wheel drive. The 2013 Corolla offers a comfortable ride and is designed for fuel efficiency rather than performance. The S trim provides a slightly more engaging driving experience with its sport-tuned suspension and cosmetic enhancements. Higher trims offer more convenience and comfort features.

What Problems Does the 2013 Toyota Corolla Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Toyota Corolla are relatively minor compared to some other vehicles. One of the more common concerns involves excessive oil consumption, particularly in higher mileage examples. This issue, while not necessarily causing catastrophic engine failure, can lead to premature wear and the need for more frequent oil changes. Regular monitoring of oil levels is recommended.

There have been some reports of issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or hesitation. While not widespread, it's important to check the transmission fluid condition and ensure it's been properly maintained. Test driving the vehicle and paying close attention to how the transmission shifts is advisable.

Regarding recalls, it is important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website with the VIN to determine if the specific vehicle has any outstanding recalls that need to be addressed by a Toyota dealer. Recalls can cover a range of potential safety issues, and it's critical to ensure they're resolved.

Long-term reliability is generally very good for the Corolla. However, like any vehicle, proper maintenance is key. Regular servicing, including oil changes, filter replacements, and tire rotations, will help maximize its lifespan. Rust can be a concern in areas with salt usage on roads during winter, so inspecting the undercarriage and body for corrosion is essential.

How long will the 2013 Toyota Corolla last?

With good maintenance, a 2013 Toyota Corolla can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 15 years or longer. Many owners report exceeding these figures with regular servicing. Long-term durability is a strong suit. Weaknesses over time might include increased oil consumption, gradual wear of suspension components (struts, bushings), and potential issues with the air conditioning system. Keeping up with scheduled maintenance is crucial for maximizing longevity. Rust prevention is also important, especially in colder climates.

Everything that’s wrong with the car. 1. 1 remote key was given to me.. come to find out the remote does not work. I paid for another key $150 and they key place couldn’t program the used and new key. 2. Didn’t know a a car dealer can sell a car with bad brakes. 3. Car has hail damage... my mistake for buying the car when it was raining outside. 4. The interior door handles... are mistreated

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Toyota Corolla's built-in tech and entertainment features are fairly basic by today's standards. Standard features include a CD player, auxiliary audio jack, and four-speaker sound system. Higher trims offer features like a touchscreen display, USB port, and Bluetooth connectivity for phone calls and audio streaming. Navigation was an optional feature on some trims.

Driver-assistance features are limited. The 2013 Corolla lacks modern advanced safety features like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good. The 2013 Corolla received mostly "Good" ratings in their crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also gave the Corolla a four-star overall safety rating. It's important to note that safety standards and testing procedures have evolved since 2013, so newer vehicles may offer a higher level of protection.

Optional features varied by trim level but could include things like a sunroof, upgraded sound system, and alloy wheels. The XLE trim offered the most comprehensive set of features. Overall, the 2013 Corolla prioritizes safety and reliability over cutting-edge technology.

2013 Toyota Corolla Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Toyota Corolla is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Toyota Corolla Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Toyota Corolla competes with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra, and Ford Focus. In terms of reliability, the Corolla and Civic are top contenders, often outperforming the others. The Mazda3 offers a more engaging driving experience, while the Ford Focus (particularly with the automatic transmission) can have reliability concerns. The Hyundai Elantra provides more features for the price.

Compared to the Corolla, the Honda Civic generally offers a slightly more refined interior and a more responsive engine. The Mazda3 is the sportier choice, with better handling and a more stylish design. The Elantra is often more affordable and may have a longer warranty.

If reliability is the primary concern, the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic are excellent choices. If driving enjoyment is more important, the Mazda3 is a better option. If budget is a major factor, the Hyundai Elantra could be considered. Each vehicle has its strengths and weaknesses, so the best choice depends on individual priorities. The Corolla prioritizes reliability and value, making it a safe and dependable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Toyota Corolla a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Toyota Corolla is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient car for daily commuting. It's worth buying as a used car, especially if well-maintained. The LE or S trims offer a good balance of features and value. Avoid the base L trim if possible, as it lacks essential features. It is not ideal for those seeking sporty handling or advanced technology. If reliability and low running costs are your top priorities, the 2013 Corolla is a solid choice. Ensure a thorough inspection before purchase to address potential oil consumption or transmission issues.

My 4th Corolla, but never again.

My 4th Corolla, but never again. Electronic locks went out just after warranty ended (less than 3 years). >$1200 to repair so I skipped it. Manual locks, ugh. Then problems with ball bearings, then alternator went out, then another problem (burr something), and other things. With my previous 3 Corollas I did not have ANY issues. Only normal maintenance- brakes, tires, etc. PLUS, I never got as good gas mileage with my 2013 as with my 2003, even when my 2013 was new and my 2003 was 10 years with 170,000 miles. Guess I got a lemon. Done with Toyota.

Great car, huge value!

This car is great! It’s small but mighty. It zips and I have not had any issues with it. It’s super reliable and ridiculously good on gas. This particular year, in my opinion, is great because even though it’s older it still looks newer/modern. Toyota did a great job with this one.

Extremely reliable, affordable car

This is my first car. It is 10 years old, with 300,000 miles on it. It has a fairly new engine with about 100,000 miles on it. It makes a little noise on the road but runs like a dream. Beautiful blue color with a few scratches, but very limited rust. I cannot say enough about the gas mileage on this car. I love driving. I drive for over an hour most days of the week, and only need to refuel once every 1-2 weeks. This vehicle handles very well, it is very easy to control and has excellent steering. Top speed is 115 mph, and 0-60 is 9.3 seconds for my car. It hasn’t slowed down at all. Can’t say enough good things about this car. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. Definitely recommend as an affordable, reliable, sporty compact car.

Reliable car for a long time

I bought the corolla le in 2013 and just this year upgraded to a new car. It was extremely reliable, I can't emphasize that enough. Never had any major issues, just regular maintenance. I drove it up and down the west coast several times and never had an issue. It's a great first car or if you need something reliable that won't break the bank.

This car is very dependable. Gets great gas mileage and never lets you down. Toyota will run forever and makes a great car for work or kids car for school.

I love my Corolla

This car handles great. It is smaller than what I originally was looking for but driving it is a dream. Looking forward to having it for years.

I enjoyed my car driving from home to work.

This care met all my needs and helped me for past four years to drive home to work and to return. Great mileage. I enjoyed driving it. When I bought it it had only 4000 miles.
